Default How many skaters out with injury now?

Am SO distressed over not getting to see Michelle live again

But was just wondering, how many total skaters are there now who are starting this Olympic season with injuries? Maybe it's just me (because my favorite skaters are the ones who have them) or maybe it's not.

Duh, I know injuries are common, but this just seems like alot.

I agree that there seem to be a lot. There were some questions about Plushy at the Russian test skate (reported on FSU); S/Z; O/L; B/A (I heard Tanith hurt herself at Nebelhorn); Fumie -- and now MK. I don't know of any others, at this time.

Canada's Cynthia Phaneuf has a minor stress fracture in her ankle. She is out of Skate Canada.

I'm not positive, but I think Amber Corwin might be nursing an injury as well.

My word, so many injuries! I'm not surprised really either. In the Olympic season, you're working your butt off. I'm sure some of them don't realize how much is too much. I just hope everyone listens to their body and makes sure they're healthy.

According to the USFSA website, yes. I hope so. Seems like skaters are just dropping like flies out of it.

Tatiana Navka is nursing some sort of leg injury (N&K performed a watered-down program at the Russian Test Skate).

And Bebe mentioned her hip was bothering her at Nebelhorn.

This is why that illusive "3rd spot" on the USFSA Olympics team for ladies is so wide open.It could simply come down to which one is in the best physical shape at big Nats.Kwan and Cohen are as sure fire as Kwan & Lipinski were 8 years ago. 3rd spot??? Amber Corwin starts to look better and better. She never rocks the rinks, but her softer approach has allowed her to go virtually injury free for all these years. If all the teen phenoms are nursing injuries, look out.

Well if Amber somehow manages to get the 3rd spot for the Olympics, I will have to be carried out of the arena in St. Louis. I wouldn't be able to handle the excitement! Of course I think pigs will fly long before the USFSA lets Amber make the Olympic team, but still it is a nice thought!

I guess I'd be the one helping Anna & Mel carry you out then, eh Dawn?! LOL :rollin

That is a great thought though. Wow, Amber would have a blast over there and that would be a nice experience for her career too.

All these injuries make me really nervous though. In an Olys year, I just want the skaters to stay healthy and they seem to be dropping like flies this year.

By the time we get to the olympics, the Turino ice rink will turn to a hospital. I hope $peedy is satisfied........

At the beginning of the 2001/02 season Plushenko had an ankle injury, Fumie was posting needed surgery on her ankles until after the Olympics, Maria B. skated the GPF within a week or so of surgery and was so obviously in pain she could hardly skate, and Emanuel Sandhu had to pull out of the Olympics because of injury. And those are just the skaters who come to mind immediately.

Injuries have always been part of the sport. Nothing has changed in that regard. What is tough right now is that Michelle is injured which is rare.

I'm holding my breath for CoC now. I do so want her to be well and at peak form for these Olympics.

From what I've heard so far, I'm not too optimistics with her chance at COC......To bad this happened. Just a week ago she was so energiezed, full of motivations and ready to go.....She knows she need all these competetions to sharpen her COP experience. And most of all she does love competing. (now ppl would say if she love competing why she sit out GPs? You know what, from what happened I can tell she has been working on a very thin line with these reduced schedules season to avoid injury.). Even after Monday's initial treatment (very hurt) she was insisting on going Campbells. Now that she decided withdrawn. I would think it worse than what I original thought......

Under the circumstances, I think Michelle could go to CoC if the travel won't be too bad, even if she can't jump. As I understand, even without jumps, she would get CoP feedback on the levels of her spins and spirals. She would also signal to the world that she is serious; and pacify $peedy. Also, since Michelle is so fit, her rehab time might go more quickly than anticipated.

True. MK "could" compete with no jumps, but I just don't see it happening. I can't imagine any elite skater doing that.

She can get COP feedback privately too. Of course, we thought she was doing that last season, but apparently not.

Argg. I feel so bad for her. Mzheng your post almost makes me cry. I am worried about her emotionally too. She must be soo frustrated after all her hard work and anticipation. And I surely hope she doesn't pay any attention to the internet boards where some are calling her a liar - argg. I so wish this didn't happen to her - Funny I keep coming back to the forum in part hoping for a thread that reads "just kidding." I wish I could do something - I feel so helpless - can't imagine how irritated she is. I tend to believe though that things happen for a reason, I hope there is cosmic justice somewhere in this. My prayers are with her. I hope she can maintain her belief in herself - I got it Michelle - just keep chanting "I'm Michelle Kwan - I can do this."

hey guys, think of it like this. If its gonna happen, it will happen. Just let it be. MK wants to compete just as much as we want her to, and she knows how much her body can handle, and it IS amazing to see that she has been relatively injury free for more than a decade!!!! (the exception being the 98 toe stress fracture, and some minor back pain, and now this). That itself is a blessing when comparing to skaters whom we often hear about that had to withdraw due to injury!
