    Weepy

I went back and read the article more closely. Many years ago, I went through a rather contentious divorce. Clay's actions remind me of that time. For the first time, I feel a fair amount of anger toward Clay. I wish him all the best for sure. But, some of his actions/reactions are quite disturbing--not cool at all.😒

I hope and pray that Michelle's "new life" is filled with immeasurable joy, great success and true love! 💛

The latest update is heartbreaking. I too was hoping for a smooth resolution... not this. So very sad. Michelle is strong, so I know she'll be okay eventually.

Not to make light of a serious situation, but what Michelle ought to do is poke a hole in the air mattress that Clay left in the Newport house, then say the workmen did it.

I always thought she could do better. I think Clay wants some of Michelle's money. Best of luck to Michelle and hopefully she finds happiness.

The Pell family is extraordinarily wealthy! Clay pretty much financed his run for governor. So, I hope he's not looking for money. As much as I hate the term "pre-nup"--I hope they had one.

This can't possibly be about money. Clay's grandparents brought together the Lorillard tobacco fortune and the A&P supermarket fortune. Although Clay has a gang of cousins, and much of the money may be tied up in trusts, he is not poor. As Teach mentions, he financed his own campaign for governor, to the tune of 3.4 million dollars. (If he had substantial U.S. equity holdings , the stock market rose 30% in 2013 (thanks, Obama). so there's the 3 mil right there.) As a last resort, he could get a job.

Michelle has substantial investments but did not have a whole lot going on in terms of million dollar endorsements, etc., during their marriage. She received a pittance working for the Hillary campaign. Anyway, even though California is a community property state (so is Rhode Island sort of, kind of), there are special regulations for marriages lasting less than five years, even in the absence of a pre-nup.

One thing that seemed strange in Michelle's petition was the request that each party be "reimbursed" for the money they put into the mansion on Hammersmith road. Reimbursed from whom? The only thing I can guess is that they set up a "building fund" as a separate legal entity and each put in some money.

Money -- the root of all evil. I'm glad I don't have any.

Looks like this will be a long time before we see the end of this divorce. I feel so bad for Michelle. She didn't deserve to be treated this way.

Even when there's money involved, contested divorces are never about money. The fact that Michelle had to find out about the filing on Twitter speaks volumes.

This is heartbreaking. But, having gone through a seriously difficult and contentious divorce myself, I can honestly say that Michelle will be better than ever. Give her time. She looks like she is taking care of herself, and I have no doubt that she will move on with grace and dignity as she has always done.

Hi to everyone! It's been a long time since I've posted! I hope you're all doing great!

If they get the asking price they will make a nice profit. As I recall they bought the house for something like 1.5 million, with maybe a million or so (?) to restore it.

Just looking at those photos, and thinking of all the work Michelle must have put into the place, gave me a lump in my throat. I only hope and pray that Michelle will find another home every bit as lovely, and that for her it will be a home filled with much happiness and true and enduring love.

    Here's another article, with pictures.

    https://www.realtor.com/news/celebri...e-island-home/

Another report said that Michelle became the sole owner in July as part of the ongoing divorce proceedings.

When all is said and done, I hope that wherever Michelle settles, she'll have a home every bit as fine as Casa Del Sol.

That is really something. Too bad Michelle wasn't able to enjoy living in the house. What fun she could have had decorating it.

QUOTE: "Michelle Kwan said that Clay Pell misled her to delay bringing action in Rhode Island after the couple began discussing divorce in November."

Clay Pell sounds like a typical lawyer... delay the action, so he could file the divorce in California (and try to get her personal possessions from that state). He even kept it SECRET up to the day he sent a tweet! ("I found out about the divorce by a tweet." - MK).

Why? Because as a lawyer he knew CA would be far more "profitable" for himself than divorce in Rhode Island. And yeah I know he's rich, but he's also a man. It's less about the money and more about "winning" to get the "biggest score" possible...... men are competitive in that way. I certainly am (and honestly I'd be feeling Opposite of Generous in a divorce).

    In any case:

I'm sad to hear this news. Michelle is a charitable human being who deserves better that what this guy is attempting to do to her

There doesn't seem to be much public information about the progress of the suits. In Michelle's filing in Rhode Island one of the things she asked the court for was that Clay's California filing be quashed, on the grounds that the couple lived in Rhode Island. There must be standard procedures for what to do in the case of overlapping actions in two different jurisdictions. (Michelle claimed that her official Rhode Island residence was a hotel across the street from her Newport mansion, and that she was living there while overseeing the restoration.)

I assume that the lawyers for the two parties are working through the details. They apparently have come to a resolution of the issue of ownership of the house, since Michelle is now listed as the sole owner, having come to an accommodation with Clay about their joint purchase.

I, for one, am content not to be too judgmental about Clay. I am sure he is following the counsel of his own lawyers, and I suspect that the two principals are not overly involved in the legal details.

I don't like to play armchair psychologist (I am too busy with my main job of armchair marriage counselor ), but to me it seemed like Clay never completely got over losing the governor's race. Maybe he needed Michelle's stump speech about getting up again when you fall down.

Anyway, stuff happens. Onward and Upward.

I can't help but notice that there hasn't been a sign of Clay on social media since the day before the divorce was announced last March. Yet Michelle has been quite visible on social media, particularly Instagram, obviously busy putting the pieces of her life back together and enjoying herself in the process. She's spoken on resilience, and is certainly demonstrating it.

Perhaps she is practicing the first thing a skater must learn and has picked herself up and continued on her way.
