Heart Maia and Alex Shibutani Receive Michelle Kwan Trophy⛸

I'm so in love with this Instagram photo of Maia💖 and Alex💙 receiving the Michelle Kwan Trophy, once known as the Readers' Choice Award. Skating fans vote for the candidates. Maia and Alex are truly deserving of this prestigious honor! 👏🏆

The coolest thing about this trophy is that Michelle won it so many times that the USFSA decided that the only way do give someone else a chance was to take Michelle off the list and rename the trophy for her.

Maia Shibutani is so gracious. Looking at the comments, she must have personally thanked each person who sent her congratulations.

Given Alex and Maia's accomplishments last year, not to mention their magical "Fix You" program, it is hard to imagine that anyone else could have won for 2016. For 2017, my money is on Nathan Chen. We will have to see after Four Continents and Worlds whether he is worthy of the Michelle Kwan prize.

Thank you for sharing this. I believe it is a very well deserved win for the Shibutanis. Like Michelle they are extremely gracious and the epitome of class and good sportsmanship.

Since Michelle has retired, I have become more of an ice dancing fan. I totally enjoy watching the Shibutani's skate and I love that they won the Michelle Kwan Trophy. How many times did Michelle win? A lot I know but I can't remember just how many time. Thanks teach23 for finding the article and the Instagram.

Seven times, 1994(!), 1996(duh), 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, and 2003. I have often wondered whether the 2004 winner, Sasha Cohen (tied with the Hydenettes that year) felt funny in winning a trophy named for her biggest rival. In 2000 the voters went with Michael Weiss, instead of world champion Michelle, in honor of Weiss' U.S. championship and world bronze. The only people to win the award twice (besides Michelle) are Davis and White and Johnny Weir. The first winner of the award was Kristi Yamaguchi in 1989.

By the way, congratulations are also due to Tyler Pierce, who finished second in the voting. She barely made the list of nominees by getting fifth at U.S. Nationals. (Only the top five are eligible.) She gave a great performance for an up-and-comer. But she must have an enthusiastic fan club to get more votes than Ashley Wagner (world silver medalist) or Gracie Gold (U.S. champion).

Also, good for Kayne and O'Shea for their riveting performances at 2016 nationals which earned them third place in the Readers Choice Award voting.

This press release was just issued by the U.S. State Department. Maia and Alex are following in Michelle's path as official Sports Envoys. They will be headed for Korea in advance of the Pyeongchang Olympics.

There is a new director over this program as several State Department officials moved up in the wake of recent resignations. The new crop are mostly career diplomats who served in both the George W. Bush and the Barack Obama administrations. I don't think that there will be any change in programs like this under the new Secretary of State. This seems to be a completely apolitical program.

Anyway, good for the Shibs. The Department could not have found better spokesmen and ambassadors.

Thanks for the update Mathman2. The Shibs will be great Envoys for the U.S. but I can't help that little twinge in my heart wishing it was Michelle.

Youth must be served, I guess.

Maia and Alex definitely have some fans in the State Department.Very likely Michelle was one of them. In 2012 then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton personally invited them to attend a state dinner in honor of the prime minister of Japan. The notice that has been taken of the Shibs is based as much on personal qualities and commitment to public service as to their being sports celebrities. At the time, they described themselves as being part of the Tomodachi (friendship) Generation, a title that encompasses a variety of cultural, educational and entrepreneurial exchange programs between Japanese and American youth.

Here's Maia at the 2015 celebration for Figure Skating in Harlem. (You're known by the company you keep. )

Maia couldn't have been in any better company. I do love the Shibs, both on and off the ice. They make great role models.

I love the Shibutanis. Congrats to them. I was so hoping it was finally their time this year to win it all. I know skaters have every right to skate and make a comeback, but I must say I was not happy about V&M returning.Still hoping the Shibs can pull off a win at worlds.
