Default “The Michelle Kwan Coffee Table Book”

“The Michelle Kwan Coffee Table Book”

Fast asleep in bed a few hours after watching Michelle’s wonderful “The Skating Lesson” interview, I had a rather curious dream.

The details of the setting in which my dream unfolded were vague; all I could discern was that I was in some sort of public place that was packed with people. Crystal clear to me, however, was that I was in the company of Michelle Kwan, the Michelle of today. We were seated on the floor next to each other, at a low table. She was attired in a long-sleeved blue-black track suit and matching sneakers.

Michelle had with her a large, thick, sumptuous hardbound book, titled “The Michelle Kwan Coffee Table Book.” With the book open in front of her on the table, Michelle was slowly turning the pages, with the book turned slightly towards me so that I could get a good view of the pages. All of the pages contained beautiful, lavish, full-page color photos of Michelle skating at various times and places, and in different skating dresses.

As she turned the pages, I couldn’t help but admire the beautiful photos, which were masterpieces of photographic art that magnificently captured Michelle in various jumps, poses, and her signature Spiral.

After a time, however, I began to notice something curious: I had never seen any of the photos before. Being a long-time fan of Michelle, I’ve probably seen many hundreds of photos of her. But all of these were totally unfamiliar to me.

Even more curious, I noticed that many of the captions under the photos listed competitions and events I have never heard of, such as “The Olympus Cup,” “The Atlas Trophy,” “Skat-a-Mania,” “Blades of Fire on Ice,” “The Northern Lights Games,” and the “Super Nova Grand Prix.”

After showing me a number of the pages, Michelle gently closed the book. With that, she smiled and handed me the book, saying, “Here, this is for you.”

Needless to say, I thanked Michelle profusely, truly touched by her generosity in giving me so beautiful a gift. Then, for some unaccountable reason, I added, “Just remember, Michelle, that you own all the Copyrights to these pictures, so you can use them any way you want to.”

Having said that, I awoke from this dream and stepped into my day.

A few hours later, a Postal Service truck pulled up, and the driver handed me a large Priority Mail package. Glancing at the package label, I noticed something peculiar about the return address: The state was listed as “Rogue Island,” and the ZIP Code contained five digits with the letter “A” at the end. Some new ZIP Code convention, I assumed.

Opening the package, I could see it contained a large hardbound book. Removing the book and looking at its dustjacket cover, I was instantly confronted with the impossible: The book was “The Michelle Kwan Coffee Table Book,” the very book from my dream. Stunned, my heart pounding and my breathing shallow in shock, I sat down and immediately began paging through the book, which contained the exact same contents as I had seen during my dream.

And it was then that I noticed something I hadn’t noticed during my dream. The pictures in the book were indeed of Michelle Kwan, as unfamiliar as the pictures were to me. However, the Michelle in the pictures wasn’t quite Michelle. While obviously identified in the book as being Michelle, the pictured Michelle had very subtle differences in her facial features. These differences were so slight they would be extremely difficult for me to articulate. Suffice it to say that although a near-twin of Michelle, the Michelle in the book was just different enough that any long-time Michelle fan would have noticed that something was amiss.

Both in its delivery to me right out of a dream and in its presentation of a Michelle who wasn’t quite Michelle, I realized that “The Michelle Kwan Coffee Table Book” comprised a profound, unfathomable mystery.

Presently, turning to the book’s Frontispiece, I saw that Michelle had personally autographed the book to me. And, reading her inscription, at least some -- but by no means all -- of the mystery was solved for me:

“To Rick -- From My Universe to Yours! I hope to meet ‘your’ Michelle someday!
    xoxo Michelle Y. Kwan”

^^^Thanks for this intriguing piece, Rick. As usual, I enjoyed the story. I've learned to expect the unexpected each time I read one of your works. I hope you do not stop writing and that you will one day place all of your short pieces into a singular volume and share them with Michelle!
