    Default "Time Lines"

    "Time Lines"

Stepping onto the sidewalk for my daily walk, I wondered, Should I go right or left today? Deciding to go right, I proceeded. A few blocks later, nearing the newly constructed local public library, I saw a large crowd gathered in front. Must be opening day, I thought.

As I neared the library, I noticed a podium near the front entrance. Standing at the podium was a young woman delivering a speech -- a young woman who, I instantly recognized to my utter shock, was Michelle Kwan!

Needless to say, I stopped to listen to her speech, an eloquent one about the importance of education and literacy, which she concluded passionately with, “Work hard, be yourself, have fun — and READ!” Instantly we all broke into enthusiastic cheers and applause, as Michelle beamed, lighting up the proceedings with her lovely, radiant smile.

Afterwards I had the singular honor of finally, FINALLY, after all these years, meeting Michelle in person. And, as I knew she would be, she was every bit as friendly, charming, and gracious as a human being could possibly be. I even got her autograph, a treasure I at once resolved to have archivally framed for posterity.

Resuming my walk, I headed home, feeling elevated, as though I was walking on clouds. Stepping up to my front door, I smiled and shook my head in amazement, thinking, When I woke up this morning, never in my wildest imagination did I think I’d meet Michelle and experience the highlight of my life today!

    *******

Stepping onto the sidewalk for my daily walk, I wondered, Should I go right or left today? Deciding to go left, I proceeded. The walk was blandly pleasant, and uneventful except at the place where I almost planted my foot into a fresh pile of dog doo in the middle of the sidewalk. “Whoops! Don’t want to step in that,” I muttered, hopping agilely over the dog deposit.

Shortly thereafter, as I finished my walk and stepped up to my front door, I heard cheering and applause from somewhere off in the distance. For a moment I wondered what was going on. Another softball game over at the park, I supposed. And then I remembered absently, Oh, yeah, the new library must be opening today -- whereupon I stepped into the house and resumed yet another boring day I would soon forget.
