I am happy that the forum is back up. Michelle's agent, friend, father-figure passed away on Tuesday,11/11/14.
My heart goes out to her. She tweeted the following today, 11/13:

Weepy Shep Goldberg Passes Away at Age 65

Very sad news. Shep was so good to Michelle and MKF. He will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathies to his family.

Phil Hersh's article about Shep is wonderful. He wrote one article, then received quotes from Michelle and added them to a second article. The article also mentions the fact that Michelle is scheduled to speak at Shep's funeral on Monday.

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports...11-column.html

It seems that the Tribune is blocking the article, so here are Michelle's words:

"For more than 20 years, Shep stood by my side as my manager, confidante and trusted adviser," Kwan said Wednesday in a statement via U.S. Figure Skating. "He cared for me like I was his own daughter, helping me with difficult decisions, making jokes when I needed a laugh and was always there through good times and bad. I am heartbroken that he's gone and will miss him more than words can express."

Kwan is to speak at Goldberg's funeral Monday in Michigan. It will be a difficult labor of love, given how emotionally hard she said it had been even to write the statement.

"Shep was always so helpful and instrumental in giving us the right guidance," she said when we talked late Wednesday afternoon. "I trusted him. My family trusted him. In the decisions he made and the advice he gave, he acted as my father would

"Everywhere we went, all those trips, all those competitions, everyone seemed to know him. He had the ability to maintain those friendships over the years. He is an incredible person."

This is such sad and shocking news. I was lucky to meet Shep on many occasions, the last being at Michelle's induction into the Hall of Fame in San Jose. He was always so friendly to us MKF fans, even recognized us and would stop and speak to us. He helped us get backstage at some COI stops, and kept Heather informed of news about Michelle. Someone from his staff followed MKF--there was the time when a group of us met for lunch at COI in LA and our lunch was paid for!! We finally figured out it was a person from Shep's staff (in other words, Michelle bought us lunch). Then there was the champagne at our dinner meeting in San Jose with the lovely note from Michelle. Shep was very good to MKF, and I'd like to believe that was because MKF has always conducted itself in a manner that he and Michelle could be proud of (kudos to Heather and Grace and the members of MKF).

I'm sure Michelle, her family, Shep's family and many others are devastated to lose him. Clearly he was a wonderful person, beloved and respected by so many. It's just a huge loss to those who knew him as well as to the figure skating community. My heart goes out to his family, and to Michelle.

He was so so good to MKF, and he was just such a nice guy. Even for the often brief moments of interaction I had with him, he always made me smile. He was so good at his job, and I feel like whoever he came across at these skating events he was very nice to, and didn't talk to us like we were crazy or anything =) I will miss him, for someone I didn't know well, he made a lasting impression. I am very sad that he will no longer be here to continue to manage Michelle's career, and be the rock for so many people. She must be devastated as his family and other friends. I hate all cancer, but especially pancreatic cancer.

I always wanted to take a picture of him at the events I went to, but I will always remember him telling me not to take his picture and to only take Michelle's. It just spoke to me so much about what kind of person he was, never wanting to be in the limelight, happily working behind the scenes.

I have known many Agents/Managers in my lifetime. I worked for some when I was a young girl and I never knew anyone to take an interest in their client the way Shep was with Michelle. He was always in the background and attended everything she was involved in doing. I believe he even went with her when she was sent to other countries as an Envoy. His interest in Michelle was like nothing I had ever seen before. He was lucky to have found such a good, well balanced person like Michelle to manage and she was very lucky to have found someone like Shep to watch out for her and her future the way he did. Michelle must be beside herself with grief and I send her my love and Shep will be a Star always looking down on her and watching out for her. Michelle will forever be in good hands.

We were privileged to have witnessed such a sublime example of understated strength, competence, diligence, depedability, tolerance, equanimity and decency. Thank you Shep, thank you so very very much. My heart goes out to Shep's family, our girl, all of MKF and all who he touched.

Herr, you spoke my heart. I'm so deeply saddened by this loss. The positives you express are what I am concentrating on to cope. Thank you Shep for presenting Michelle to the world in a manner worthy of her. I have more feelings to express, but need a bit more time. Meanwhile, here is Shep's obit from the funeral home website. It's lengthy, but comprehensive and enlightening.

What a wonderful way for all of us whose hearts have been touched by Michelle to honor Shep.

ETA: I've come upon a quote that I think speaks perfectly to Shep, his contributions, and his legacy:

Here's another fine article written by Lynn Rutherford about Shep and his influence, particularly in the world of figure skating. (from Team USA.org)

I would imagine Michelle will need to find another Agent down the road. We all know she will never replace Shep or find an Agent like him. Any ideas who she would look at or even if she would hire someone. Do people in politics use Agents or would it just be for her sports affiliations.

    Excerpts:

“Shep was very interested in providing support to the USOC on an international level, since Michelle Kwan in particular was so universally loved,” Coleman said. “He was always offering support to us.

In recent years, Kwan and Lysacek traveled for the U.S. Department of State as sports envoys, as part of a program to strengthen U.S. relations with countries including Russia, China and several Eastern European nations. Kwan was appointed Senior Advisor for Public Diplomacy and Goldberg made it his business to involve the USOC in her efforts.

“We worked very closely with Shep and his clients on USOC fundraising efforts, as well as to provide support for our sponsors,” Coleman said. “Michelle Kwan is a wonderful general ambassador for the Olympic movement and we received many benefits from her fine work.”

As a tribute to Goldberg, the USOC is presenting an Olympic flag to his widow, Janet, and daughters Carley and Haley.

“These flags are presented to Olympians and Paralympians, so this is special,” Coleman said. “Shep has a clear influence on shaping the lives of iconic Olympians, and those champions really epitomize the U.S. Olympic brand. We’re so very thankful for all of his efforts over the years.”
Like Michelle, few have served the "Olympic Ideal" so well.
What a wonderful tribute to Shep.

Such sad news. Shep was more than Michelle's manager he was family to her, a second father.

So many tribute articles have been written about his passing, that tells us what a wonderful person he was
    to so many.

My deepest condolences to Shep had his family and to our girl Michelle.

Shep was also Jason Brown's manager. Jason dedicated his FS yesterday at Cup of Russia to Shep. So sweet.

In my life's darkest time, Michelle's lovely skating brightened my spirits. In this dark time for Michelle, may someone or something lovely brighten her spirits as well.

This is so true for me as well, Rick! What a heartfelt sentiment--thanks for expressing it so beautifully!

Today was, undoubtedly, most difficult for Michelle.
However, I'm sure that she handled it with grace, as Shep would have wished and expected her to do.

I noticed Erin from the other thread commented about possibly gathering donations as a group for charity in Shep's name. I had intended to donate individually, but I thought something about coming from MKF just seems so ... right. Anyone interested in this? I thought that was such a great idea, given all that he & Michelle has done for MKF in the past few years, I think it would be a nice gesture from us. It may be hard though, given that many of us do not really visit MKF all that often anymore to round up fans to do this for Shep and for Michelle.

Grace, I'm going to make an individual donation. But I'd love to participate in an MKF group donation as well.
