    Default Where have people gone?

Apologies if this is not the right thread, but I was just wondering if MKF folks have migrated to any of the other forums? Honestly, I kind of lost interest in skating after MK ended up not coming back in 2010, but have just gotten into it again and kind of miss my old interlocutors on this forum! I signed up on GoldenSkate and have found a few familiar faces, but are there more people on one of the other sites? (I realize I only joined MKF in 2006, after the point where y'all met up in real life, but despite that I still kind of got used to our community in the years I was active).

    Thanks for any suggestions!

For exactly this reason, I noted a sharp drop-off in MKF activity in the wake of Michelle's decision not to try for the 2010 Olympics. Activity picked up in late 2011-Feb. 2012 due to Michelle being inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in Jan. 2012, and then dropped off again.

However, I've noticed a gradual increase in activity ever since Michelle married Clay in Jan. 2013. And, her commentary work in the Sochi Games brought back some names I haven't seen in years; in fact, some members posted who hadn't posted in the entire time I've been a member, since 2008.

I'd love to see MKF become vibrant again, as in my opinion Michelle's life looks to be evolving into a phase more exciting and more significant than even her stellar skating career was. After all, when we were all speculating and sharing our opinions on whether Michelle should try out for Vancouver, I seriously doubt any of us could have imagined that five years later Michelle would have a very real chance of becoming the First Lady of Rhode Island.

And who knows what the next five or ten -- or fifty -- years will hold. I just hope that for Michelle it will be wonderful and grand -- and that MKF will remain for us to follow what lies ahead for this extraordinary lady.

Well, there's always a peak in activity on most figure skating sites around the Olympics and World's, but I think figure skating in general has lost a lot of fans since the new scoring system was installed. And I think a lot more casual viewers will drop off after this year's judging controversy, which the ISU refuses to acknowledge, which means they won't do anything to fix it.

Having said that, there are a lot of die-hards still very active on FSU (Figure Skating Universe) www.fsuniverse.net

FS is in a sad state. diehard fans aren't satisfied. casual fans are dropping like flies. i don't know how sane non-fans would become fans after watching just one ice dancing competition (the costumes are often just too much & confuses figure skating with DWTS or some random pageant. Blades of Glory wasn't sillier). this isn't even to mention the ---- judging & COP.

i skated briefly as a child & had always loved the sport. my interest picked up with Nancy & Kristi (ahead of The Whack) & i only ended up getting more roped in like a lot of people. but Michelle Kwan truly is the reason i gave my heart & soul to the sport in terms of fandom. no one, not even Yu-Na, has been able to come close to what Michelle did for me. i'm actually shocked that i'm checking in on a Saturday morning when i'm supposed to be working on a proposal :-) anyway, as i've said, it's sad to see but what happens when something so beautiful is whittled away in terms of actual skating & any sense of integrity associated with it. people are herd-able, but only up to a point~

As other faithful MKF members have pointed out, it's kind of like a yo-yo, I guess. There have been several serious "hacking" events. Certain newsworthy occasions temporarily draw some posters back to this site. It has been awesome and I hope that, even though there's been quite a drop in participation, this site will somehow always be available (archived????).

As I see it now, here are some suggestions. Social media, twitter, and other forums seem to thrive. Michelle actually has a Facebook page and a twitter account. Heather and Grace also have very well run twitter pages.

    Link to Grace's page: https://twitter.com/gracemkf

Link to Michelle's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...e=3&permPage=1

Link to Michelle's twitter page which has reached 20,000 followers as of today (3/1/14) :

Thanks for all the replies; I'm happy people are at least around to do so! I agree that I hope this site never goes away; that would be a huge loss.

There actually is a website that collects, archives, and allows access to defunct websites, and past years' versions of still-active websites. It's the Internet Archive, at www.archive.org. So, if MKF ever is shut down, it will still exist (minus posting ability) there.

But I fervently hope that MKF remains. While social media have their good points, participation in Facebook and twitter, etc., is just not the same as participating in a forum like this one.

What would I do late at night if I didn't have the MKF to turn to. It is the best way for me to relax and forget all my problems for a little while. This forum is the best thing on the internet.

    Hi All,

I still check in every day. Have noticed several familiar names on Golden Skate Forum, however. MKF is still my fave, though. It's the only place to get new about the Queen on a regular basis, thanks to a few die hard searchers. Thanks to all!

I wouldn't just say it's just the decline of skating popularity which accounts for the lack of activity on the forum, it's also the fact that these types of discussion forums are declining in favor of other social media like twitter and Facebook. It's unfortunate because these are the only places where you can come and pontificate at length about your favorite skating related topics, and share conversation with like minded individuals.

It's kind of a shame because I feel like more people would post, if more people posted. I still love talking skating but admittedly don't post often because no no one else is.
Michelle, she had me at 6.0!

Gosh, I feel old! Lol. I remember being around during the ezboard days... I've been a big fan of MK for as long as I could remember... we're both from Torrance and it was exciting to have a hometown hero! I'd pass her family's restaurant (Golden Pheasant) all the time. Anyway, needless to say, my interest declined when MK bowed out. Nobody else can compare, or draw that much attention. NOBODY.

Also, I can see where the new judging system tried to make the sport more quantitative vs subjective, but I think that turned me off from skating as well. I stopped watching Nationals/Worlds after 2006, didn't watch any of the 2010 Olys, and finally circled back to the sport this year (after a lot of wikipedia'ing of the last 8 years LOL). I think I'm happier just watching 10 years of classic MK, than any of the current skaters. *sigh*

I think you're correct, Sebastian. I also think that being able to watch so many of the old performances on YouTube and elsewhere on the Internet any time you want to takes away some of the urgency of having to watch the Olympics, Nationals, or Worlds the one time they're broadcast.

I have mostly gone over to FSU but am a bit turned off after this last Olympics. It is so negative over there. You can't say anything, even the most innocuous well-wish, without being picked apart. And the board as a whole whiplashes back and forth between extremes. During team event, it was all "Russian overscoring conspiracy!" After the ladies', it was all, "There was no overscoring! It's all Yunabots being evil!" It's just confusing!

It made me come back to MKF to check in because I always thought this board was a very positive place. Sure, we had our disagreements, but I thought everyone was great, by and large. I see I'm not the only one who misses the community here.

I remember how much I was struggling with my family issues when I was (14-17) and I would come in here asking for help (of any kind). The more I think about it, the more I feel I am in debt to all of you for helping me through some of the most difficult times of my "young" life. I am forever grateful. Anyways, here is a quick summary of the journey I have been following my high school graduation in June of 2011.

I took much time off MKF (Michelle Kwan Forum) following the 2011-12 season to focus on my studies. Furthermore, I took one bold step to change the way I had been eating and started to workout at school. At 191 lbs, I had high blood pressure and was on the verge of being diabetic; the doctors left me no choice, and I am proud of the decision I made. During the course of that semester, I lost 50 lbs and was in the best shape of my life! To my surprise, I was also doing exceptionally well in my academics - something I was not able to do when I was not able to accomplish in my earlier days (ie. middle school, high school). I was on cloud nine... not really.

With success comes failure. As 2013 arrived, I felt good; that was until someone close to my parents told me that I had gained some weight since they last saw me (meaning last year). That one comment changed my life - for the worse. I started to work out more frequently, would rarely (if not ever) eat something and would never drink any liquids. I lost the extra weight that I had gained, but my life was spiraling out of control. I could not stop myself. It was like a daily thing. I would get on the scale and tell myself that losing a few more pounds won't hurt. I would always feel lightheaded and nauseous. But, as I continued to do well in the classes I was taking, no one around me could tell that I was suffering from an eating disorder. But, I was and I knew it. I did not seek help.

Everything still looked all fine and dandy on my court, so I went to the next semester. That semester changed my life. One of my close friends reported me to the school authorities of a conversation she supposedly had heard. Being serious, the school had to look into the matter and I was told not to come back to school until the investigation was finished. So there I was at home, by myself and feeling hopeless. I went through a hearing process and was cleared to resume taking classes next semester (this semester). I took the time off school to seek help for myself; not just for the eating disorder, but for other aspects of my life too.

I can report that I am the happiest I have been in my entire life. I have missed you all. Thank you for always being there!

I have often wondered what became of you. You were a constant poster on MKF and then nothing. I am glad you have turned your life around and are now the happiest you have been in your life. Good luck to you and I wish you success in whatever you decide to do in the future.

I'm so sorry to hear that the last few years have been so difficult for you, but so happy that you had the courage to get the help you needed to turn things around. Wishing you continued happiness as you return to your studies.

I'm still here! Albeit not as much as before, though I think with social media like facebook and twitter, things are going even more warp speed ahead with instantaneous information in front of us. With that said, I can't believe it's been over 13 years since I officially joined this site. Now that I've reached my 30's (did I just say that?), I just want to say it's been an honor to grow up and see our "big sister" grow up to become the remarkable woman that she is.
