Thread: 2014 Nationals

  1. Default 2014 Nationals

    I couldn't find a thread for Nationals.

    I have a question:
Is it now required for the tights to be in the skates? They all seem to be back to wearing the tights in the skates and not stretched over the skate. I actually prefer the tights in thee skates myself.
Also Meryl and Charlie were simply amazing! I'm so glad I have it taped so I can watch again and again!

Wow this place is a ghost town!
After watching the skating this evening my question is answered...there were some skaters that did wear the over the skate tights. I liked the skates that gracie wore with the silver heel it blends nicely with the blade. I saw a couple of other skaters with them as well.
    I thought Gracie looked great!
Congrats to all the skaters for their places at nationals as well as those that make the Oly team!

I really enjoyed watching the women's skating tonight on prime time NBC. Congrats to all the ladies, Gracie Gold, (sorry, the 2nd placer's name escapes me at the moment); Mirai (so good to see her skate that well again), and Ashley Wagner. I think Ashley Wagner deserves to be put on the Olympic team if the Committee chooses to. I'm fine with the top 3 finishers also, too. Guess, we'll find out tomorrow. I loved Jeremy's short skate. Really hope he continues with a really good free skate tomorrow. I just missed the first hour of the 3 hrs. afternoon figure skating. That must have been the pairs. Looking forward to Sochi Olympics.
Added: Polina Edmunds. It looks like the selection team selected Gracie Gold, Polina Edmunds, and Ashley Wagner as the Olympic team to represent USA at Sochi.

Enjoyed the ladies. Most of the programs were very nice. Gracie and 2nd place did very well. Mirai did the jumps but was BORING considering the James Bond music, and I thought she was overscored. I missed Ashley, darn... I guess we'll have to wait until tomorrow on pins and needles.

Loved the dance. Davis & White were amazing. Chock & Bates were very good. Shibs were boring.

Here's a pairs question. When showing Castelli&Shapnir's SP this afternoon, during their pairs spin, he accidentally lifted her of the ice. Yet when looking at their scores, they still got all positive GOE. Shouldn't that have been considered a mistake since it interrupted the spin?

    Boo!

I was shocked by how out of the loop I was. I turned on the TV and pretty much all of the top ladies had new coaches.

Glad to see GG with Frank, and as we saw, the switch worked, but my god, she's still like watching paint dry.

No idea why Ashley is with Arturian, and as we painfully had to witness, she's going the way of Mao, etc... Nicks really did give her a much needed spark and sparkle. This was just... I really feel for her. That was rough.

How did I miss all of the Paulina hype. I was like "who?" but the judges had no problem scoring her like she was somebody they knew. Guessing by how many here are calling her "2nd" I'm not the only one who didn't get the memo.

so far some really great programs and some heartbreaks as well. Getting nervous for JA. His SP was sublime!

p.s. good for Mirai.. You Go Girl! won't do anything, but at least she did something.

This was some great skating. I enjoyed it a lot. I haven't enjoyed a skating competition this much in eons.

Question: who was chosen for the men's team? I'm already in love with Jason Brown

i was at the Garden yesterday for the men's free & in general enjoyed the final 2 groups. i left immediately after Abbott's skate figuring he was the clear winner. i noticed his FS score on a monitor on my way out & was shocked to see he scored around 10 points lower than Brown. i may have missed something, & i haven't check specs yet today, but how?

Jason Brown was the clear crowd favorite & his program is well rounded. but he's the '02 Sasha Cohen to any era Kwan when compared to JA in my opinion. Jeremy had more mistakes, but he's on a completely different level & appeared to land most jumps cleanly (including that opening quad). i appreciate Jason's "Sasha Cohen" carriage but abhor his frequent wobbly landing edge & oft slow speed (how in the [blank] did he land a 3 axel?!). he will not compete with the best in the world.

regarding JA's skate, so happy to see him push through. there were a couple of jumps "bad Jeremy" might have popped or fallen on that he fought for. he also appeared to delay the takeoff of a loop at the end of the program because the edge didn't feel right - smart. happy to see him skate well & truly believe a blow out performance from him could land him on the podium in Sochi. his music & program are lovely, but they are the sort of thing that could backfire on him as easily as set him apart from other top skaters at the Olys. we'll see...

speaking of beautiful soft music - whoever skated to 'Schindler's List' was divine. tough music because, like JA's, it requires near perfection. & poor Adam :-| i would have been disgusted if i wasn't so shocked that he barely got off of the ground in half of his passes. like Abbott, he could be otherworldly. could be...~

Nicks is still her coach. He just doesn't travel anymore so I guess Arutyunyan is his stand in.

Been out of the loop. Who are all these new skaters? LOL.

I just had to wiki the results since I didn't watch. How did Caroline Z. and Rachael F. place so low? =\
Seems like ping pong the last decade of skating (gosh, has it REALLY been that long since MK?)

You aren't really THAT out of the loop. The reason you haven't heard about Polina before is that this was her first Senior event, and nobody shows the juniors anywhere. The reasons you WILL hear more about her in the future is that she is coached full-time by her Russian mom who was a figure skater and part-time by Frank Carroll.

I didn't think Rachel Flatt or Caroline Zhang would ever figure into the podium picture, but I didn't think they'd place 18th and 19th. In Rachel's case, I don't really think she cares. She checked out of competitive skating the moment she started at Standford. She's enjoying her school life, so good for her. I feel heart broken for Caroline Zhang. Her career has been nothing really but dissapointment, and failure, despite her young pontential and intitial enthusiam surrounding her skating. I can't imagine she'll return to the sport after this 19th place finish. What would would be the motivation?
Michelle, she had me at 6.0!

So Rachel Flatt and Caroline Zang competed at 2014 Nat'l's? Did not know that at all. I only watched NBC television telecast and I know that is limited. I just don't have the time to sit thru hours of icenetwork to see everything. I agree about Caroline Zang, she was such a cutie and seemed to have so much potential, but puberty hit and then she couldn't seem to adjust to her new body and jumps.

I was rooting for Jeremy Abbott in his free skate at US Nat'ls. I love his long program with the choreography and music. Does anyone know the music? I hope Jeremy does well at the Olympics.

    Rachel Flatt SP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXNTSrtfki4

    Caroline Zang SP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0KG09GL1yQ

I liked Rachel's short program. Caroline just didn't look happy. I think the ladies got hammered from 2006 to 2010 for the under rotations. Caroline getting the worse of it (not without reason). I couldn't find any video of their long programs.

Here is an older article about Rachel: http://www.denverpost.com/olympics/c...ready-make-run
