Default Mirai No Longer Working With Frank

Phil Hersh just tweeted it, https://twitter.com/#!/olyphil So I can confirm Frank and Mirai haven't worked together since Nationals. Mirai hated the long drive out to Cathedral City, driving for 2 hours then trying to skate was not working for her. So she and Frank parted ways. She is working with coaches at Pickwick, Hersh lists several, but the one I have heard about is Wendy Olson.

If you want to know why Mirai didn't move out to Cathedral City, I have no idea. I assume it wasn't financially possible for her family to move. But that is just an assumption on my part.

Thank God. Now she can be the same old head case she always was and people will stop blaming frank for it.

I'm not surprised at all. I like her and she's had some brilliant moments, but she really needs a sport psychologist. I think a lot of our skaters do.

Pickwick though?! I wonder how if or how often Scootie gets to train with her?

She's looking great skating. While I won't comment on who she works with, as it's not my place to say, I pretty much skate the same sessions with her each day and it's a great inspiration to be around her. Huge jumps, good speed, etc. I just hope she shows off in competition what she does on practice ice.

She's very sweet and funny too. She was nice enough to ask me how my sectional event went a few weeks ago. It was nice of her to remember

ETA- pickwick has a large number of very good-name coaches that have national and international students. There is a lot of talent in that respect, especially how many of them either competed or coached at world level.

I am not at all shocked to here this. I don't blame Frank for her problems. I do think she needs a more nurturing coach and I think seeing a sports psychologist would help. I think Frank is a great coach, especially for skaters like Evan who are self-motivated.

    Good luck Mirai!

I get the sense that she has been a bit burnt out. The article where she talks about enjoying having a chance to focus on something besides skating seems a clue that that may be part of the problem. She seems to have spent the last year either in a car or at the rink. A change of scenery and the distractions of school may really help her enjoy skating again and help her focus better.

Unlike a lot of people around the internets, I don't think she's "done".

i hope this serves her well and hope that perhaps even getting more rest and family time will help.

Again, I say, how do we know who has or hasn't seen a sports psychologist?

    This!

And we don't know what any of these athletes are thinking. We don't know really know them. I love all of those speculations on all the fan boards stated as absolute fact. "Mirai thinks this..." and "Mirai's problem is that she does this..." in training. We don't know what she does or thinks. And with her, it gets put on her mother as well. We don't know the family circumstances. We don't know why they make the decisions they do. And half of the decisions Mama Nagasu supposedly screwed up are hearsay no less.

    Ridiculous!

I found that article to be a little sad.

Dang, that article is a downer. Phil really knows how to pluck the cords of pessimism, doesn't he? But Mirai obviously hasn't looked too happy lately. I hope this change reignites her spark. She's so talented.

Reading between the lines, I'm guessing money is at the root of a lot of these decisions. That's too bad. I wonder how much financial issues for her family were taxing on Mirai this last season.

I wish USFSA had better means of supporting skaters.

When I first read it I thought "dang, hell hath no fury like a sport reporter not return texted!"
Then I remembered that Phil is always doom and gloom, flatt should retire, Kwan should give up, etc... Still, remaining silent is a pr misstep and doesn't bode well for mirai IMHO.

Having made the drive out to the middle of nowhere, AKA Cathedral City, where it's boiling hot and dry 90% of the year and freezing the other 10% of the time, I don't blame Mirai one bit for not wanting to move or even drive out there. Best of luck to her at Pickwick.
