Thread: Competitions on TV and Is Ice Network Worth it?

Question Competitions on TV and Is Ice Network Worth it?

    Hello all,
I have been looking around on various sites and haven't found any scheduled TV broadcasts for skating competitions. Is this season as sparse as last, or am I overlooking something?
Which brings me to Ice Network. Is it still really choppy an unreliable?
    Thanks in advance!
    Take care,

I had no problems with Ice Network on my ancient PC last season.
But could not access it on my new Mac, even via Firefox.

The reason I subscribed to Icenetwork was because of the next to nothing coverage skating gets on television. Even last year, during an Olympic year, there was hardly any coverage; they didn't even broadcast worlds! Universal Sports will broadcast the big events sometimes but I have DirectTV and that satellite doesn't get support that channel. You can find some of the competitions online but to be honest, it's easier to just go with Icenetwork. You get full GP coverage as well as all of the little extras (interviews, practice videos, etc.).

The first season I subscribed I had major problems with it; super-choppy feeds, blackout notices even though I'm in the US, etc. Last season, I didn't have one issue. I was really shocked. They did a good job working all of the kinks out of it and it was so worth it. I believe the subscription is like $30 or so and, to me, it's totally worth it.

Renewal notices for the subscription should be going out in a few weeks and I fully intend to renew...definitely worth it IMO.

This past year was the first time I subscribed. I had no problems with the live streaming and was pleased with the coverage.

Moxie, I'm sorry to hear that you can't access IceNetwork with your new Mac. I found the page that lists the requirements for Macs and Windows. Hopefully you can find a solution on the page.

    Moxie,
Boo hiss to it not working on your new Mac, that was what I was afraid of since I am a Mac user (and have been for years). Did it work with Flip4Mac?

I use a MacBook and didn't have any problems with the feed. Once in a while, there's some video that won't come up, but eventually it does. Last season with the Grand Prix events, I found the best coverage was with France, Japan, Russia, while Skate America was really bad. The volume on the commentary was too loud and overpowered the skaters' music. These are all technical issues with IceNetwork though, and not with my Mac.

You just reminded me that was the only thing that irked me. At times, the skater's music sounded kinda far away or completely in the background. That was annoying but hopefully they'll fix that this year...

I also have a Mac and have subscribed for the past 2 years... one year on my old powerbook (from 2005) and one on a Macbook pro that I got last fall. It has worked decently in Firefox for me (my normal browser is Safari), though I once logged on at work on a Windows comp and thought the video player was much more user-friendly on there. There was a dramatic improvement in the quality of Icenetwork's video/tech between years 1 and 2, and hopefully some of the other quirks that still remained will be gone this season. I definitely think that it's well worth the fairly low cost of subscribing (hopefully it hasn't increased this year...). I don't have cable and didn't get Universal Sports, which REALLY limited the skating I could see otherwise. However, IF you don't have a decent internet connection you might run into a few more problems. But overall I've been happy--it makes for a nice lazy weekend sitting around and watching as much of a GP event as you want. =)

The first Grand Prix doesn't start until October 22nd, so I think it's too far in advance for anything to be on TV schedules yet. Most only go out 2-3 weeks.

With that being said, all of the skating comps besides the Olympics and US Nationals were broadcast on Uni Sports last year and there were some cheesefests on NBC, so it's probably safe to say that will be the case this year as well. I'm just glad that I live in a Uni Sports broadcast area.

Matiara, that's a really good point about Universal. If Universal is going to show the events this year, I don't need to renew icenetwork and duplicate my paid Comcast coverage. icenetwork didn't cover the final two groups at Nationals or any of the Olympics either, so I wouldn't be missing anything. It would be great to see Terry Gannon again! (Heather, TV schedule update please.)

Back to the original question: I had a very good experience with icenetwork last year. Not one glitch and very smooth picture. There was a sound problem that others mentioned, but I think it was at only one event, and I don't think it was their fault. It was the only feed coming from that particular venue.

Yes, they did. They couldn't broadcast it live due to NBC's broadcast, but it was put up for on-demand viewing a few days later, and is still up there.

My cable company is finally providing our area with Universal Sports TV (they probably got tired of me complaining lol) so I may not renew my subscription with IN this season. When IN first started they seemed to cover a lot more skating but last season not so much.

Thanks chipso1. I'm going to go watch the last group again right now :-). Just wondering why I didn't see it there after all this time. Could it be I didn't look? Slapping self aside the head.

kittyjake, I agree. I can't wait to see a schedule, so I know whether or not to renew. I do like seeing the events as they happen, but as I've said before in other threads, I blow the entertainment budget every month on good TV and high speed internet. You really don't want my cable bill, and neither do I, but we're homebodies, so it's the right choice for us and our budget. icenetwork, OTOH, and even my paid FSU subscription are another matter. I will not renew FSU, and icenetwork depends entirely on the TV schedule. Also, I don't know if it's possible, but I don't know how to download from icenetwork, but I can record from Universal Sports. That's another big plus for me, as I'm trying to rebuild a small library of what I enjoy. I'm so glad this topic was brought up and that Matiara mentioned the probable duplication of services this season.
