Thread: Yu-na Splits from Brian Orser

Default Yu-na Splits from Brian Orser

Kimmie Meissner (re)tweeted about this today. Here's a chunk of the article:

Brian Orser's representatives from IMG New York published a press release stating "Brian Orser and Tracy Wilson received a termination notice from Yu-Na Kim's mother, Park Mi-Hee" on the 24th.

Park, who is both Kim's mother and a representative of her management company All That Sports, met with Orser and Wilson on the 2nd to inform them of Kim's decision to separate. Orser stated that the statement did not inform him of the reasons behind the split, nor was it expected in any way.

"It has been my honor to be able to work with an athlete of Yu-Na's caliber. I hope that she will continue to improve as a skater," stated Orser.

Thanks for sharing this news. I'm surprised to hear this, since it always seemed like Brian and Yu-Na had such a great working relationship. Even if she has decided to turn pro, wouldn't she still occasionally want some coaching from time to time?

I was also puzzled by Brian receiving the news in a letter from Yu-Na's Mother. Is this common practice? I don't understand why Yu-Na didn't tell Brian herself what she wanted to do.

Last I heard was that Yu-Na was going back to Canada to create a new program for this season to be ready by Worlds. I'm totally SHOCKED.

I won't be surprised if Yu-Na announces her retirement from eligible skating soon.

... I am quite saddened to say this, but I think she is retiring. There's no reason for her to leave Orser. She and him had a strong relationship that led to many victories.

I wondered why he didn't seem to be involved in her last show. He was doing commercials with YuNa and he was very much involved in her other shows. He knew this was coming and I bet he knows the reason why. Brian is such a gentleman, he would want to give YuNa and her people time to make their announcement to the skating community. I doubt you will see Kim skating competatively after Worlds. She will probably continue using David Wilson for her new programs. I wish both YuNa and Brian good luck and happiness in their future.

There are conflicting statements coming from Brian's Agency IMG and Yu Na's Agency All That Sports.

IMG saying that after initial meeting between Yu Na's mother and an Agent from All That Sport on Aug 2. in which Orser requested he and Yu Na both take a break, which was agreed to by all parties, Brian later on around Aug 23., notified All That Sport of HIS decision to not continue as coach of The Olympic Champion.

All That Sport statement to the Korean Press simply stated that on Aug 2nd, Yu Na's mother and the agent met with Brian Orser and Tracy Wilson to inform Brian that he would not be continuing on as coach of Ms. Kim. No explaination for the decision was given to Brian at that time. According to the statement to Korean press today, Yu Na will continue to work with David Wilson on preparing her Programs for the World Championships, in Toronto. There was no indication on any future plans for Ms. Kim past the World Championships and no word on Kim searching for a new coach at this time.

I'm a bit sad to hear this really. They did seem like they had such a wonderful relationship together. I doubt if it was anything personal; it probably has to do more with time and priority.

By now, I'm sure other elite level skaters are knocking down Brian's door to get him as a coach. He's got both Adam and Christina Gao who will be on the GP this year...but with Yu-Na skipping the GP, does she even need a coach until early next year? I'd think she'd continue to train by herself for the rest of the year and maybe in January or February train with Brian before worlds. That would make the most sense to me. Why have a full-time coach if you're not competing full time? Her focus is on worlds. Once she gets her program with David, she can continue to work on that and train by herself, and then get with Brian prior to worlds to work out any kinks. If I were her, that's what I'd do...I'm hoping that's what she'll do. They worked so well together...I can't imagine another coach who would want to step into that position of coaching her! Can you imagine the scrutiny? Not just of the figure skating world but of all of Korea! I don't envy that person...

Even if they are officially done as a skater-coach pair, what they've accomplished is amazing and I'm sure they are very grateful and proud of each other. This closes a chapter in both of their lives and opens up a new one. No matter what they chose to do, they made history together and they can always look back on that and be happy.

Hopefully some of the details will be clarified in the coming days. Really sad to hear that tho...

Here is another article ... stories from Camp Kim and Camp Orser are beginning to conflict:

There was another Korean skater training with Brian and Yu-Na; she will now be returning to Korea. I hope this works out well for all parties.

They are saying that Min-Jung Kwak, Korea's rising skater, was also under Brian but that she has been pulled from him as well. I believe she too is signed with ATS, Yu-Na's management company.

It seems to be turning into a sorta ugly situation . There are rumors that people from Mao Asada's camp approached Brian and asked him to become Mao's full-time coach. Apparently he turned them down but something is going with that. They say the relationship has been "uncomfortable" since May...

I suppose it will all come out at some point, but right now it's looking like something shady is going on...

ATS (Kim Yu Na's agency) claiming Kim has had an "uncomfortable relationship" with Orser since May, when the 'other skater' approached him. That 'other skater' we all know is Japan's Mao Asada. So the Korea - Japan/Japan - Korea distrust gets Orser fired! That it broke up this magical pairing is beyond the pale!

Skaters don't usually announce their retirement by breaking with their coach, they retire and then logically they don't need a coach anymore. We never knew why Michelle left Frank, I bet we never know why YuNa left Brian. But I bet there is way more to this story.

IMO, something must have been going on in addition to the approach from Asada. Otherwise, I would think that Brian's refusal to coach Asada would be taken as settling the matter -- there would be no further distrust.

I doubt this had anything serious to do with Asada. As it was stated before if Orser declined Mao/or Mao's camp than that would've been the end of it. Coaches of top level athelete's get approached all the time to coach fellow competitors. This is nothing new.

I don't know if this announcement is indicative of a impending retirement announcement. It seems to me of that if she were going to retire she could just do it, she didn't need to terminate her coach first. Her retirement would naturally mean the end of her coaching contract.
Michelle, she had me at 6.0!

It sounds to me like a very young girl, a very controlling and avaricious mother, and the old as the hills China/Korea thing. And Brian is the sacrificial lamb - er, uh, ram.

Figure skating, folks; its figure skating.

    This isn't even interesting.

It looks like ATS and Yu-Na's mom kinda blindsided Brian with this...and apparently Yu-Na had no idea about what was going on...

This is very sad but, in my mind, it underscores the difficulty of skating at such a high level which also makes MK look all that more amazing...

Maybe YU-na has decided to follow in the foot steps of her idol, Michelle, making her own decisions about her skating.

Oh, how I wish this was being handled more professionally. I understand the frustration, but this is not the way for either side to do this.
