I'm gonna HAVE to be stranded on an archapelago so I can have many!
But being stranded with Ginny and her choice would be far from sucky.

Hmm if we're going with any program including Pro and exhibition I'd go with this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HldRjxM0VKU .......heart on her sleeve.

But if we're talking competitive non-pro and non-exhibition.....I'd say Song of the Black Swan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzHZtUPDIVE . In SOTBS she did it with boot problems...which was pretty amazing. Red Violin would be almost tied or a second. I just love the subtle movements in SOTBS that give the impression of a swan without fluttering ridiculously like some skaters do. Not to mention the lovely falling leaf at the end with the piano.

This however could change on a daily basis as I have a hard time choosing one, and I even changed my response once after I had typed it lol

    Here's mine - Two commentaries:

Michelle Kwan- 1998 World Pro- Technical Program

    Here's my favorite:

I've watched this a countless number of times. It is the pinnacle of skating artistry and technique, IMO.

    I love ALL of these.

I've posted it before but to me the amazing things about Michelle's 2000 Worlds free skate, in addition to the extraordinary performance, were all of the things that made a win seem highly unlikely:

    1. Michelle hadn't hit the 3/3 combo since the program's debut at the 1999 SA.
    2. It was the season that Michelle began her undergraduate classes and was trying to balance going to college with elite competition.
    3. After a very gritty win at the 2000 Nationals, a result with which I agree but others did not, she had something like 6 or 7 weeks to raise her performance to the level she delivered.
    4. IMO of all of the music she has chosen over the years, this is the darkest and most difficult to "sell": There was no room for making a mistake. She had to nail it perfectly.
    5. Even though she had 2 world titles already, a 3rd World title was getting her into Peggy Fleming territory. Many had written Michelle off. Winning this title, IMHO, permanently cemented her image as a true champion.
    6. As I said above, many had written Michelle off and were certain that Irina was a shoe-in to win. After all, Irina landed a very difficult 3-3 and won the GPF that year. Michelle struggled in several competitions.
    7. Michelle made a minor mistake in her 2000 Worlds SP and was 3rd going into the Free Skate.
    8. Even if she won the Free Skate, the final results were out of her control. The only way she was going to win was if somebody beat Maria B in the Free Skate, which Irina did, thank-you-very-much.
    9. There were no North American judges on the panel for the Free Skate.
    10. Michelle skated before Maria and Irina, and we all know that could be the kiss of death under the 6.0 system because the judges always left room just in case somebody out-skated the earlier skaters. And Lord knows, whoever the judge was that gave Michelle the 5.6 must have been smoking weed.

This victory touches my heart the most because of everything she had to overcome to win. To skate like that even though you know the odds are against you winning, is SO Michelle!

Oh my gosh, how to you actually choose one perfection over another one? If I were forced (someone twisting my arm behind my back) it would have to be her 2003 winning programs--TFB and Arenquez! But reserve the right to change my mind, lol

Ginny, by the same token the 2003 season showed just what an incomparable competitor Michelle was (and is). After the heartbreak of the 2002 olys--she came back with a vengence and proved to the world that she was the prima donna of skating.

ITA with Ginny's pick, but I would be very happy with Michelle's 1999 Worlds TRV Exhibition program too:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P06NFFMn7Hs

As I've mentioned here probably several times in the past, I LOVE that exhibition of Michelle's because, to me, it just came out of nowhere! She wasn't feeling well at Worlds (though nobody knew until after the event, apparently). She WON silver, but was clearly the class of the field and proved it by skating this innovative and wonderful exhibition program. As I've said in the past, Maria Butyrskaya may have won the World Gold that year, but Michelle won the event. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, debuts a program like Michelle Kwan!!!

Hey - I don't recall EVER seeing Michelle's 2000 qualifying skate to TRV. Does video exist?

I'll go with Aranjuez 2003, not sure if Nats or Worlds, though.
    Close runner ups:
EOE 2002 Nats b/c it was nats, but overall I liked the World Pro version better, as a program.
    2003 TFB,
    2001 SOBTS worlds
2004 Worlds Tosca, because of the circumstances
    2005 Spartacus, nats,
and I could go on and on.

BUTT, how can one skater have so many "once in a lifetime" performances? Is that really possible?

Yup, it doesn't get much better than this--the music, the choreography, and michelle. She captured my heart and soul with this one. Hence my online identitity! Also my favorite novel of all time , and I think a top film (mini series) score as well.

Gee whiz, it is like you are asking if I want a thousand dollar bill or 10 one hundred dollar bills. I just cannot choose one because there are so many great ones that took me to her special place. 'Cept that special place was priceless.

Only Heaven could send us such an angelic skater.

Sorry! I can't choose just one!

Hey...I have an ulterior motive which is to get in one place links to all of Michelle's most awesome performances (and there are more than you can find for any skater in the history of the sport).

Any version of The Red Violin (1999 Worlds Exhibition, 1999 Skate America, 2000 Worlds) are in a league of their own....

As are the 1998 World Pro Am Ariane and East of Eden.

Of course, my favorite total season was 2002-2003. Michelle won every competition she entered that season and skated with such joy. The 2003 Worlds in D.C. was a "Perfect Worlds".

It just doesn't get any better.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfV0Ck1wlA0

Couldn't find the 1997 version on YouTube, butt, this performance is pretty close. What other skater is out there who gives you multiple choices of the same program from which to pick a perfect skate???? ANSWER: nobody else.

Michelle makes perfection on ice look soooooo easy. Not only does she give you her soul, but she channels the music like no other:

I believe this was posted by GinnySmith already in her list above, but this is my personal favorite:

    2004 Nationals LP:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWQSoIEAxns

For me, this performance just transcends the competition. It is all about her love of skating and how she is able to touch the audience WITH that love. Whether she won or lost (of course, she had won, but just saying), this performance is one for the ages. That's Michelle adding to her status as a legend, icon, and inspiration all in one, and shows why and how she is so special.

Any skater would be lucky to have ONE perfect performance like Michelle's. Michelle had dozens and dozens!

I've been kind of wishing there was a master Youtube list of all of Michelle's performances. Thanks for this thread!

    Heart

    This was so hard!!

If I was forced to choose just one, it would have to be either 2003 Aranjuez or her 2001 EOE Nationals SP. I've watched these performances countless times, and to this day, I can't watch either without tearing up and getting goosebumps!
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NR697j3FFE
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2D9DDQxwIk

And anyone who says skating had no choreography or technical difficulty under 6.0 needs to watch either Ariane or Taj Mahal.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgNEQuVx4zs
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE0Blj2A0x4

I think Ariane is one of Michelle's most under-rated programs (and I just love her costume), and she looked so gorgeous skating to Taj Mahal at 1997 Worlds (doubled lutz & all)! That music is fantastic.

Here's a great, underrated, SP performance:

"Fate of Carnen" - 1998 Keri Lotion Classic
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCAHZ...eature=related

I might like this performance even more:

"Fate of Carmein" - 1998 US Open
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wz9TA...eature=related

    What were those scores about?

2000 World's free skate for me is numero uno.

#2 is tough--might be 2003 Worlds free or 2005 Nationals SP
