But here's the source to information given by gratefulmkfan. This is terrible. Only a few days until the start of the ladies short program, and suddenly her biggest fan dies. My prayers go to Joannie and her family.

oh my god how awful!! With this horrible tragedy happening so close to the Ladies short, I wonder if this will impact whether or not she'll compete. Skating is understandably probably the last thing on her mind.

The Canadian Olympic Committee said Rochette still intends to compete at the Games.

WOW, I couldn't even imagine how emotional it's going to be for her when she takes the ice and tries to skate.

Condolences and Prayers to the Rochette family

That is devastating. I have no idea how she is going to handle that... It's like Angela N.'s accident before nationals that time. It'll be hard if not impossible for Joannie to focus on competing with that tragedy weighing on her heart like that... It's stuff like that that make you realize how important things are...I won't be surprised if she pulls out. God, I can't imagine what she must be going through right now.

    My prayers are with her...

Just read on skatefans that Joannie will have a closed practice this afternoon, no public will be allowed, I hope that includes press. Leave her alone to deal as best as she can.

What a heartbreaking tragedy. My heart skipped a beat when I read it...and I felt awful. I'm so so sorry, Joannie. OMG, she was only 55! That's no age to be dying! These days with people living well into their 80s, that's so young.

A day before the ladies SP. As if it wasn't going to be emotional enough for her to skate in her home country...her MOTHER passes away.

I'm stunned. God Bless you, Joannie.

"To me, the most exquisite quality Michelle has to offer is that she's not afraid to skate with her heart and soul. This takes a great deal of courage and is very rare. It doesn't come simply from technique, but rather from the way a person handles everything in their life." Scott Williams 01/23/03

How horrible. My heart is really breaking for her. I lost my mom almost two years ago now...even though I was "prepared" for it, I could barely function. It's still difficult, every day. To imagine what Joannie must be going through right now...it's making me cry.

I'm thinking about Joannie's 2006 Olympics LP, and how she chose that music because her mother had used it as solace after her fiance died. They were obviously very, very close.

    How tragic, and how cruel.

Poor Joannie! My thoughts go out to her and her father at this time. Losing one's parent is never easy, but the shock of an untimely passing is especially hard. I hope Joannie competes, but should she not, it would be understandable.

What a tragedy. My heart goes out to her.

I can understand why she'd decide to compete despite her grief. Probably she knows that her mother would want her to continue if she could. This has got to be the hardest time in her life though. No matter what, I know she'll have the entire support of everyone in that stadium when she takes the ice.
