ACORN 'gotcha' man arrested in attempt to tamper with Mary Landrieu's office phones
Alleging a plot to tamper with phones in Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu's office in the Hale Boggs Federal Building in downtown New Orleans, the FBI arrested four people Monday, including James O'Keefe, 25, a conservative filmmaker whose undercover videos at ACORN field offices severely damaged the advocacy group's credibility.

Also arrested were Joseph Basel, Stan Dai and Robert Flanagan, all 24. Flanagan is the son of William Flanagan, who is the acting U.S. attorney for the Western District of Louisiana. All four men were charged with entering federal property under false pretenses with the intent of committing a felony.

An official close to the investigation said one of the four was arrested with a listening device in a car blocks from the senator's offices. He spoke on condition of anonymity because that information was not included in official arresting documents.

According to the FBI affidavit, Flanagan and Basel entered the federal building at 500 Poydras Street on Monday about 11 a.m., dressed as telephone company employees, wearing jeans, fluorescent green vests, tool belts and hard hats. When they arrived at Landrieu's 10th-floor office, O'Keefe was already in the office and had told a staffer he was waiting for someone to arrive.
When Flanagan and Basel entered the office, they told the staffer they were there to fix phone problems. At that time, the staffer, referred to only as Witness 1 in the affidavit, observed O'Keefe positioning his cell phone in his hand to videotape the operation. O'Keefe later admitted to agents that he recorded the event.

After being asked, the staffer gave Basel access to the main phone at the reception desk. The staffer told investigators that Basel manipulated the handset. He also tried to call the main office phone using his cell phone, and said the main line wasn't working. Flanagan did the same.

They then told the staffer they needed to perform repair work on the main phone system and asked where the telephone closet was located. The staffer showed the men to the main General Services Administration office on the 10th floor, and Flanagan and Basel went in. There, a GSA employee asked for the men's credentials. They said they left them in their vehicle.

The U.S. Marshal's Service apprehended all four men shortly thereafter.
Bertha Lewis is toasting champagne tonight. I must question the intelligence of anyone who fell for that ridiculous pimp outfit.

What We Know about the Young Republican Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight
So who are the four geniuses who got arrested by the FBI yesterday for—apparently—trying to tap the phone of a sitting U.S. senator?

James O'Keefe, Robert Flanagan, Stan Dai, and Joseph Basel, all 24, were arrested by U.S. Marshals yesterday for "entering federal property under false pretenses for the purpose of committing a felony" after they allegedly dressed up as telephone repairmen and attempted to tamper with the phones of Sen. Mary Landrieu's New Orleans office.
O'Keefe came to fame last summer when he and his colleague Hanna Giles dressed up for Halloween early and walked into ACORN offices nationwide pretending to be a hooker and a pimp seeking tax advice, thereby blowing the lid off the sordid scandal that was ACORN's free tax advice to people pretending to be hookers and pimps. The sting was tightly coordinated with the launch of Andrew Breitbart's BigGovernment.com and promoted beyond saturation by Fox News, which heralded the pair as the conservative answer to 60 Minutes. We've asked Breitbart whether O'Keefe and his pals were on assignment for Big Government when they were arrested, but haven't heard back.
Flanagan is the son of William Flanagan, the acting U.S. Attorney for the western district of Louisiana. Which makes it rather awkward that he was arrested in, and is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney for, the eastern district of Louisiana. The elder Flanagan ascended to the gig just one week ago after his Bush-appointed boss left office; none other than Sen. Mary Landrieu has submitted recommendations for his replacement to the White House. UPDATE: And Obama has nominated Landrieu's recommendation, Stephanie Finley. But Sen. David Vitter has placed a hold on Finley's confirmation because he wants assurances from the White House that Jim Letten, the U.S. Attorney who will be overseeing Flanagan's prosecution, won't be replaced. In other words, Flanagan's dad only has a job because the job of the guy who's prosecuting his son is in potential jeopardy.

Aren't Federal Buildings supposed to be protected by security guards and measures? All the ones I'm familiar with are. If so, how did these folks make it to a senator's 10th floor office without being challenged? What if this had not been a black bag bugging job, but an assassination attempt or terrorist attack?

Doesn't their easy access indicate an inside job?

If they wanted to do such a black bag job right, they should have hired Jim Phelps and the IMF (Impossible Mission Force). Or Napolean Solo and Ilya Kuryakin. Or Steve Austin and Oscar Goldman.

Well, if they showed ID & didn't have a gun, they wouldn't need inside help to get it.

I would think that someone in security would have asked to see a Work Order, and then made some calls to confirm it.

Not to mention her ability to burst tennis balls with her right hand! And her likely ability to perform Quintuple Axels on ice!

Salt Lake County GOP cancels keynote address after New Orleans arrest
Salt Lake County Republicans are scrambling to line up a new keynote fundraising speaker after the arrest Tuesday of their scheduled first choice, filmmaker James O'Keefe, on charges of attempting to tamper with the phone system of a U.S. senator.

"The allegations and arrest today certainly change our plans," county GOP Chairman Thomas Wright said in a telephone interview with The Tribune. "We'll be announcing a new speaker shortly."

Given the practice of Gene Doping, and likely advances over time in the practice, we will likely see an entirely new species of human being, virtually superhuman in a bionic-like way, in the ice arenas and on the playing fields of tomorrow. Such Genetic Manipulation will, of course, bring into play the Law of Unintended Consequences -- big time.

Judge Orders 25-Year-Old O'Keefe To Live With His Parents
As if James O'Keefe hasn't suffered enough indignity after botching an alleged phone tampering operation at a U.S. senator's office, getting arrested, and being photographed leaving jail, the judge in the case has now ordered that he reside with his parents until the next hearing.

Magistrate Judge Louis Moore made the order Tuesday as part of the conditions of release for O'Keefe, 25. (Read them here)

The young conservative filmmaker is free on $10,000 bond. A preliminary hearing in the case is set for February 13.

Breitbart confirms he was duped by O'Keefe and the ACORN pimp hoax
It turns out that Andrew Breitbart didn't actually know what was on the ACORN tapes when he helped launch them on his website last year, and used the videos to fuel his oddly personal crusade against the low-income advocacy organization.

I think Mr. Breitbart is about to get sued ....

It would serve him right if he did.

What with the latest developments and Congress throwing out several babies with the bathwater, I expect ACORN's funding to eventually be restored.
