Here was an interesting article about Ashley taking 3rd place.

Am I one of the few who is sad that Ashley won't be going to the Olympics? She has a real fighting spirit and certainly did well this year on the Grand Prix circuit.

You're not; I'm also sad for her. But my sadness is that there weren't 3 spots. I would feel equally sad if Rachael or Mirai hadn't made the team.

I would feel bad for Ashley's 3rd place finish, but if you look at her past results, she did nothing to help the US secure the 3rd spot in the first place. The US ladies lost the 3rd spot in 1998, when Mirai, Rachel, and Caroline were too young to go to Worlds. Who did the US send? Kimmie, Bebe, and... Ashley Wagner. All three ladies skated poorly, and in 2009, the US only had two spots at Worlds. At Nationals the following year, she placed fourth, two spots away from the World Team. Yes, she was moderately successful in the Grand Prix this season, but I don't think she would have been in the medal hunt at the Olympics, although if she had pulled a "Tara" or "Sarah," as the author suggests, I would probably never watch skating again.

Correct. But Mirai did not qualify for Worlds last year, so she didn't to anything to secure the spots either.

    WOW.

That's so weird that they showed a completely different nationals on the west coast.

Unlike what he just described, here on the east coast they showed Ashley skating awkwardly and then making immature petulant faces all during her competitors programs, and then making a face like a funeral director once she didn't make the team.

Yeah berthes, my mom and I were cracking up at Ashley's faces she was making. I realize the Olympics are once every 4 years, but really.....some maturity would go a long way.

I recognize that this must have been heart wrenching for her. Everyone wants to go to the Olympics, and to work so hard and dream so big and come so close in the only Olympic year in nearly two decades where we only got two spots for the ladies...it would be heartbreaking for anyone.

However, Ashley did not skate well enough to earn a spot on a team. 'Nuff said. Her short was flawed and her long program was full of double-footed jumps and clumsy skating. She was gifted with the high score she got, imo.

I thought the article was fine overall, mostly a piece about how she is dealing with this major disappointment. Though I certainly don't agree that she "laid down one of the most vibrant performances seen here all week."

The only outright ridiculous part in my opinion was this:

She looked for all the world to be the skater with the best chance of showing up in Vancouver, popping off a Tara Lipinski or Sarah Hughes performance, and walking away with a gold medal.

We don't need that to happen again.

MAYBE what Ashley needs to take from this is the need to lay down a clean short. It was her short program that cost her the gold this year, last year, and I believe also in 2008.

Yeah except for the fact that Tara was a world champion before the Olympics, and Sarah was a world bronze medalist before the Olympics. They at least had some credentials to back themselves up.

Even if Ashley skated a brilliant short and a blinder of a long, I doubt she would be on the podium. Because it's gonna go like this (in my mind):

    1. Kim Yu-Na
    2. Mao Asada
    3. Ugh, who do I put here? Joannie (I mean she DOES skate well in Canada, but she DOESN'T skate well under pressure)? Miki? Akiko? Rachel? Mirai? Akiko? Is Caro gonna stay on her feet and be gifted something by Ottavio (LOL).

I was thinking of the same thing. That #3 spot is OPEN season....

Mirai has a beautiful SP program and if she can knock it, she'll be in 3rd place in the Olympics...

    MK... She defined perfection
    Sasah.. She redefined flexibility

    Yuna.. Elegance
    Mao.. Grace
    Flatt.. Kwan Steady tastic
Nagasu.. Alluring, mesmerizing, exquisite mermaid on ice
Zhang. .. Hire Rafael for speed and Sato for mental stability...

I know many of you don't agree with the way ISU ranks skaters; nevertheless they are the rankings. Ashley is ranked 13th in the world; Mirai 27th. Whoever goes to worlds, I doubt we are going to regain 3 spots. Assuming Rachael finishes 5th like she did at worlds, then Mirai would need to finish no lower than 8th. The international judges will be brutal on her URS. Although I don't believe Ashley would earn us three spots either, I think she would improve the chances of that happening. So who is the lucky skater that will get beat up on next worlds, when and if we don't earn three spots for that competition. Probably Mirai unless Flatt uncharacteristically falters.

Hmmm. Interesting food for thought, Iceman.

I remember the cameraman pointing a lot of takes at Ashley while everyone skated after her. I kept thinking, why have your camera pointed at this young girl? Just let her be!

But, it makes for good drama. I know a lot of skaters have been in that position and just smiled and waved, so I suppose Ashley can learn from this for the next time....

Also, I was surprised that she (Ashley) wasn't going to be going to Worlds. (She's 1st alternate). A different thread said that she pre-turned down 4CCs.

Was that wise? I'm not sure! She seems to be missing the important chances and then not being able to skate during the other times. I dunno who is helping her make these decisions...

Mr. Judd is a local sportswriter for the Seattle Times newspaper. He has, in the past week or so, claimed Ashley as a Pacific Northwest "girl". She does have some roots here through her Grandfather. While I do not agree with alot of what he said in this article, I'm willing to give him a little leeway for his remarks. After reading all the pap in regards to Sasha the last few weeks, I find his fairly inoffensive.

Ashley probably turned it down 4CC because it starts January 25th in Soul Korea. It might be a little too soon to go to another major competition.

Why would they put it so close to US Nationals and the Olympics? It might be that Nationals was two weeks in stead of one.
