Clearly the COP has much to blame, but still, under the COP artistry is still possible as was demonstrated with Sasha's performance during her SP.

So, though I was never a fan of Sasha's, I did appreciate her moving performance last night for what it was, a reminder of the beauty in figure skating that was much apparent during MK's reign.
    Butt.....who pushed Michelle?
    I believe!

I remain totally in AWE of Michelle Kwan.

This season just hasn't been the same without her.

I miss seeing her on the ice.
    I think I always will...
    IF...she steps onto it again

From what i see, I don't think its sasha 's fault that we lost 3rd spot, but She didn't help out at all (shes wasn't injured or something) so i don't think she deserve to go. I much prefer Mirai and Flatt. Those current girls right now lost the third spot so let them fight for the two spots.

I've given this some thought and I have concluded that, while she did surprise me by being in shape and serious at giving this a go, I wasn't super impressed with Sasha. She definitely carries herself better than just about everyone else, and has a more polished look on the ice. But I think her jumping was not very impressive. That combo had a wonky landed and was possibly (?) two-footed. The program itself didn't have as much of the Sasha "wow" power that I am used to. Her 2006 short program, for example, was one of my favorite programs from her, and this one just doesn't compare, imo. I guess she has a month to fine tune if/when she goes to the Olympics.

I guess second place is a good and fair spot for her, except I think Mirai should be a few more points ahead. Rachael did great but yeah, her spins still aren't so hot and her presentation isn't nearly as charismatic as Cohen's.

But I don't feel blown away by Sasha's skating. Just kind of lukewarm. Honestly I think everyone is so surprised that she 1) showed up at all and 2) is capable of landing jumps and didn't totally implode or break down. When your expectations are that low, a short program like hers is going to seem even better than it really was, I think. But good for her for taking the first step toward her comeback.

I just realized I may also be influenced by how sickly thin she looks. Yes, I know skaters have to be skinny, but I think mmg described her as "cadaverous" and yikes, that is a good description. I think it's maybe the mid-jump photos/spins I have seen, too -- I agree those should never see the light of day -- but on her it's just awful.

Anyway, the long program is the real test for Sasha. We shall see. I just hope everyone brings their A game and gives us some awesome skating! If Sasha pulls out a mostly clean long program with at least five (clean) triples, I will be impressed indeed.

Michelle. Because she was never in it for now, she never wanted to just win some medals and then make a lot of money on Stars On Ice. She wanted to be a "legend" she wanted to be remembered 100 years from now. So she pushed herself to be one of the greatest ever, not just grab some gold and run. Michelle always had her eyes on the big picture, and it showed.

    Excellent excellent rant

And remember David Raith said yesterday in a press conference that Sasha doesn't even have to finish 1 or 2 to get a spot. He said the committtee would consider sending her anyway. Which was when I completely lost it, and why I wasn't online last nigh.

If there were three spots I wouldn't mind so much. If Sasha had gone to LA and tried to earn three spots I wouldn't mind so much. But for Sasha to just drop and and be treated like the Legend she is NOT, I can't even take it. I hate what this has done to me, cause I want to be nice. But I just can't, this is too much, too much hype, too much adulation, too many lies, too much "if Michelle, if Michelle." I have had it! Sasha is NOT Michelle, never could be MIchelle and doesn't deserve a tenth of this attention and acclaim.

Yes she did indeed. Exactly my point, thank you for articulating it much better than I could.

All of which leads me to this summation - Michelle is truly a one-of-a-kind skater. She had/has fabulous technique, outstanding presentation, to-die for emotive personality while skating AND and a personal drive and work ethic that are almost inhuman they're so far above the majority of the population.

Ladies skating is a vacuum without her.

Well, when Sasha did her combo on Universal both Sandra and Scott caught the wrong edge take-off, the fact that it may have been 2 footed. Tara on IN didn't say anything. She just said "she lands it" or something like that.
So, she may need more time as a commentator to spot when a skater cheats an edge and so forth.
I was surprised by Scott actually he was right on it when she did her combo, he caught everything.

Sasha does look very thin, but she is very muscular, surprisingly muscular for such a small person.

The dress was not flattering I agree.

Still so weird to see her, she looks a little older and seems a little calmer.

I am already tired of the "Sashahype", but that is the press not Sasha. The NBC site is really overbearing.

I agree! Her legs looked very thin, as well.
For her sake, I hope that she has the strength to do the jumps/elements; and the stamina to complete the LP.

I agree completely and wholeheartedly. It makes me sick to think that no one ANYWHERE (other than fans here) have said anything about this.

And while this is pure speculation, I believe that because Michelle has such integrity... she decided not to make a "comeback" this year despite reports saying all of her jumps were back, and she was looking better than ever (oh, and that was LAST spring/early summer). After Michelle watched worlds, I believe that she decided it wouldn't be fair to compete and "take" one of the spots. And when Cohen announced her plan, this really solidified Michelle's. Michelle knew full well how hard it takes to prepare year in and year out. Afterall, she had helped maintain three spots for the Olympics in the previous three Olympics.

My guess is that she didn't want to take a spot from a girl who had earned it. A skater who had worked the last three years, competed, etc... and "put in their time." No, women's skating in the USA isn't what it used to be, but what does having a "savior" like Sasha do? It brings back hype for an event or two before she goes back to her own little world. While the other girls continue to work hard and try to build names for themselves. Afterall, Michelle had to do the very same as a mere 12 and 13-year-old.
You got to keep it up and don't give up. Chase your dreams and you'll find...all in time...

I decided to upload Sasha's SP first. And it's currently uploading. All of my videos will be from Universal Sports. And from there on out, it will be in order. Starting with the Tatyana girl

...if michelle thought she could have competed

at the highest level at nationals and the olympics...

don't think for one second she wouldn't have gone

    for it.....

...her love of competition.....her unmatched internal drive...

and knowing she had a great chance of winning would have

    overcome anything else...

Here's Sasha's Short Program. YouTube is probably still processing it, so don't be upset if the quality is not great at the moment.

I admit I had a bittersweet tear in my eye when the commentator said "Welcome Back Sasha." I so wanted that to be Michelle's welcome back........sigh

But Sasha did wow them didn't she? Anxious to see the other SPs.

Only Heaven could send us such an angelic skater.

Michelle was 19 years old when the calls started for her to step aside and make room for the younger skaters and "give them a chance". In addition, many were not supportive of Michelle's bid for the "by" to the 2006 Olympics and some people were down right nasty about it, even though Michelle competed in the 2005 Worlds and help secure Oly 3 slots.

Sasha on the other hand is being treated like skating royalty. I have yet to read or hear any objections over her waltzing in after contributing absolutely nothing to US Figure Skating over the last 4 years, while all of the other ladies have skated their hearts out and skated well enough to hang onto 2 slots for the 2010 Olympics. Give me a freakin' break!

So I am here to do what the media isn't doing to Sasha that they did to Michelle in 2006: Giving Sasha a hard time for potentially taking a slot away from a lady (whoever is 3rd) who has been on the scene and working hard and showing up to key events.

Believe me, if Michelle had decided to compete, while some would have been supportive, there would have been at least one article ripping her to pieces for all of the things I mentioned above about Sasha. I have my suspicions as to why this double standard exists. Perhaps one day I will voice it in the Political Section because it is way too controversial to voice here.

As for me, but I just can't stand to watch and I'm not. The most I can stomach is to read reports here because they are fun and entertaining. Ginny, I loved your rant. Always have, always will. I found myself having this same rant, but not before my father called to voice your same comments.

I also love (insert sarcasm) the comments that snark on the "current crop" not doing enough to earn that 3rd spot, so to hell with them if they miss out because of Sasha. If Sasha were here for the "love of skating" she would have gotten her behind here last year to help earn that extra spot for her country. Doing it for her country, there's an interesting concept.

I was also insulted to hear Scott say that Sasha brings so much more glamor to the sport. Well thank goodness we have Sasha since obviously Rachel. Marai, Ashely and co. are a bunch of hounds! What an insult. Thank goodness Sasha has returned to save the skating world in the U.S. It's a shame we have had to watch such pathetic skaters carry the torch in Ms. Cohen's absence.

The USFSA is telling us they have more than likely made up their minds as to who they want, and it is obviously Sasha, and I would expect Rachel to join the squad. This is where we are heading tomorrow night. I feel as if Sasha has already been told, "skate half way decent and the spot is yours." Just a feeling.

I can see why there is the big hoopla for Sasha. Since Michelle is gone, she is the only U.S lady that non-skating fans have heard of. I'd like to see Sasha win Nationals and go on to the Olympics and medal (very un-likely).

Regardless of what U.S ladies go to the Olympics I think our chances are very slim to bring back a medal let alone a Gold One. Yuna and the Japanese ladies are just too strong. At least the Ladies Nationals will be interesting with the top 3 being so close.

It's always amazes me at all the negativity that is voiced against Tara, Sarah and Sasha.

Good post. The negativity for these other skaters always amazed me as well but it's so previlant, I've grown use to it. I hope Sasha medals as well just to piss people off but doubt it will happen. The U.S. just refuses to sponsor really technical skaters, always has. They fought CoP and look where they are? The Asians I feel go out of their way to sponsor and promote truly gifted skaters as it should be. Skating is alive and well in other parts of the world.
