    CAN singles continue to rock

Joannie and Patrick; Delobel/Schoenfelder (lovin' the Pink Floyd routine - lifts are stunning)

Caroline needs to ditch her coach more than Mao - slooooow as molasses, high-ugly kick on those toe-pick jumps, hesitant on the 2A. meh

This figure skating season has got to be one of the most boring and disappointing season ever! As far as I'm concern, the only thing worth watching right now in figure skating is the dance event -- and that's only because at least you KNOW that in that event the skaters will actually remain vertical!

Sorry, but this is really mean. This is a skater who represented the U.S. well with a 7th at Olympics & two Top 10 finishes at Worlds. It's one thing to say that her skating was terrible at this event (which it was) & that perhaps she & her coach should take a hard look at whether she wishes to continue training for Nationals. But to suggest that, at the mere age of 19 and with many other talents/careers that she can pursue, she needs to "only come up for air" is, well, deplorable.

I feel the same sentiment even with a few bright spots here and there.

It's pathetic how these skaters continue to play musical chairs with the same tired selections and with the same arrangements, cuts - Tosca, Scheherazade, Waltz Masqerade, etc etc.

I can only give my impressions of Mao's LP because hers is the only one I have seen. I feel her LP music choice really overpowers Mao and I don't feel she's dramatic enough to handle it. I felt the whole time she was slow and not listening to the music, just skating through it. She doesn't have the interpretation or expression to effectively sell this music. She was way off the beat of the music with her arm movements and I thought it paled in comparison to what Jeremy Abbott and Domnina & Shabalin have done with this music. It didn't help that it's the worst technical performance I've ever seen from her . . . way too many mistakes and only 2 clean triples (both flips). I'm sure this is a competition she would love to forget. I felt bad for her and I think she needs to return to one of her former LPs or create a new LP, though I'm not sure if she possesses the Stephane Lambiel gene to be able to do that in the middle of a season. Then again, Evan Lysacek and Belbin & Agosto have done it before, so there is hope for Mao, maybe. Anyway, it's clear I think she needs a revamp! The good news is that Mao has time and it's only her first competition of the season . . . good luck to her!

    I agree...

It baffles me to read stuff like that because you'd think people were talking about Tonya Harding. In my wildest imagination I can't imagine how Emily Hughes is deserving of such an assanine and innapropriate remark. She's a admirable young woman and a great American lady who we should be proud of and supporting instead of tearing apart. Keep in mind I'm not refering to everyone just a very select minority. Honest skating related opinions are great, and sometimes they even cross over a little bit into remarks that could be considered "making fun of" but the previous remark was just wrong and uncessesary.

    About Mao...

I don't know what happened it was kind of one of those bad to worst kinda programs. I hessitant to pass judgement on the program based soley off what I saw because I think when a program is skated poorly it makes the whole program look bad. Programs with all the content look 100% better than those where there are a lot of mistakes.

She did manage to rotate 4 triples: axel, toe, and two flips. I think the triple lutz is under construction, and the salchow was just a flat out miss.

    I don't think I've ever seen a program where she didn't land a 3loop though. That's strange.

I'm hesistant to conclude on how she's doing until I see more from her this season. This could have been an issolated bad event, or symbol of greater trouble.

One thing I know about Mao is that she's a very reactive type skater. She doesn't stay in a problem and let it get worse and worse. She faces it, and works her way out of it.

I hope to see better from her at NHK

wow just watched mao's program. that costume is... hideous the music, well it started off sounding nice, but then it started to seem too circus-like, and then it just kept repeating. i can understand when some have commented on lack of variation. after a while, i started to get a headache. the program itself wasn't completely horrid IMO. but i just don't think its the kind of program that brings out the best in her.
Thank you Michelle Kwan, for the heart you continue to share with all of us.

ps - skatefan20, can you tell me where and when your Michelle quote is from? I love it!
    I believe!

I remain totally in AWE of Michelle Kwan.

This season just hasn't been the same without her.

I miss seeing her on the ice.
    I think I always will...
    IF...she steps onto it again

I know. Look at Joannie two gold medals. She is being rewarded for beautiful skating, edging, fully rotated jumps with beautiful landings. crisp precise footwork and, strong centered spins her command of the ice is really lovely to see. She does not need bendy positions and a bag of tricks to win. Her skating speaks for itself. Sound like someone we know?

eta: I am not comparing Joannie to Michelle or vice versa just what they have in
common which IMO is excellent overall skating skills.

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. Go ahead and compare Joannie to Michelle. No Joannie is not as good as Michelle, but no one is. Joannie is the skater right now who reminds me the most of Michelle though. The deep, secure edges and soft knees and fliud moments are all reminscent of Michelle. And as you say Joannie proves that a skater doesn't have to resemble a pretzel in order to win even in this new pretzel of a judging system.

The USFSA does not assign skaters to events. Those days are long past. Johnny is a seeded skater and each GP can have only one World medalist per event. The Russian Federation chose to invite former World Champion and two time silver medalist, Brian Joubert over bronze medalist, Johnny Weir.
