Priest advises penance for Obama vote
The priest at St. Mary's Catholic Church in downtown Greenville has told parishioners that those who voted for Barack Obama placed themselves under divine judgment because of his stance on abortion and shouldn't receive Holy Communion until they've done penance.
Between BS like this and Prop 8, I say it's time to start yanking tax-exempt statuses from certain religious bigot organizations.

Obama has more threats than other presidents-elect
Threats against a new president historically spike right after an election, but from Maine to Idaho law enforcement officials are seeing more against Barack Obama than ever before. The Secret Service would not comment or provide the number of cases they are investigating. But since the Nov. 4 election, law enforcement officials have seen more potentially threatening writings, Internet postings and other activity directed at Obama than has been seen with any past president-elect, said officials aware of the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity because the issue of a president's security is so sensitive.

Earlier this week, the Secret Service looked into the case of a sign posted on a tree in Vay, Idaho, with Obama's name and the offer of a "free public hanging." In North Carolina, civil rights officials complained of threatening racist graffiti targeting Obama found in a tunnel near the North Carolina State University campus.

And in a Maine convenience store, an Associated Press reporter saw a sign inviting customers to join a betting pool on when Obama might fall victim to an assassin. The sign solicited $1 entries into "The Osama Obama Shotgun Pool," saying the money would go to the person picking the date closest to when Obama was attacked. "Let's hope we have a winner," said the sign, since taken down.
Chatter among white supremacists on the Internet has increased throughout the campaign and since Election Day.

One of the most popular white supremacist Web sites got more than 2,000 new members the day after the election, compared with 91 new members on Election Day, according to an AP count. The site, stormfront.org, was temporarily off-line Nov. 5 because of the overwhelming amount of activity it received after Election Day. On Saturday, one Stormfront poster, identified as Dalderian Germanicus, of North Las Vegas, said, "I want the SOB laid out in a box to see how 'messiahs' come to rest. God has abandoned us, this country is doomed."
I'm not shocked at all. Even on this very forum, Obama was equated with the likes of Mohammed Atta (ringleader of 9/11) by a poster who will remain nameless. There is no doubt in my mind that that individual probably hopes with all his or her heart that Obama will be assassinated "for the good of America". It's clear by this poster's recent posts that this poster seems himself or herself as a righteous victim of Obama and his supporters and a patriotic American rather than what he or she really is -- easy pickings for the Ku Klux Klan.

I've seen this one's rantings as well. It goes way beyond sour grapes. Some people do not handle rejection very well and sometimes it can turn dangerous.

GOD AND HEAVEN FORBID that anything should happen to the next President of the United States, heck, to even the current one. But if something happens to Obama, the country will God-forbid fall apart. I pray for these haters. I really do, and I pity them. THEY DO NOT BELONG IN THIS COUNTRY! They do not deserve to be citizens of this country!!

    Thumbsup 60 MINUTES interview

I had to chuckle about Obama's unwillingness to answer some questions. He made it clear, politely, that he had said all he was going to say on particular subjects to Steve Kroft. Seems comfortable saying 'no' when he needs/wants to.
He seems rested and ready. So does Michelle.

Loved the comment about the mother-in-law

    It went well, overall.

While the Obama people deny this report, I can tell you from reading the some of the court papers in the LA, that Bill Clinton's finances are indeed a concern to the Obama campaign/transition, and had a part to play in my decision to back Obama, i.e. I think they would have been an issue in the the general election.

    Happy Birthday to Prez-Elect Biden!
In Chicago today, at Obama Transition HQ, President-elect Obama surprised the Vice President-elect, who will turn 66 tomorrow.

After their weekly lunch, Mr. Obama presented Mr. Biden cupcakes, Obama aides say.

Obama lit the candles on the 12 cupcakes and brought them over to Biden.

"You're 12 years old!" Obama joked, referring to the dozen cupcakes.

"Maybe in dog years!" Biden laughed.
'The Obama Effect' Prompts Europeans To Confront Racism
President-elect Barack Obama's historic win is the source of much discussion overseas. Many Europeans hope that the election of an African American president in the US will spur their own countries to re-examine their own racial dynamics. Steven Erlanger, New York Times' Paris Bureau Chief, and author Mely Kiyak explain the phenomenon of "The Obama Effect."
'March For Unity' supports Hardwick hate crime victims
HARDWICK -- Township residents banned together for a "March For Unity" Saturday, Nov. 15 to rally around a Hardwick family targeted in a hate crime, which is being attributed to the family's support of President-elect Barack Obama.

On the eve of Election Day after Barack Obama was declared winner of the presidential election, Alina and Gary Grewal and their eight-year-old daughter made a large cloth banner declaring "President Obama Victory '08," and strung it proudly across the front lawn of their Hardwick home. The next evening the couple was dismayed to find the banner had been stolen. But, they were even more horrified when they awoke the following day to find a six-foot tall wooden cross erected on their lawn, which had been burned with the banner. The three-foot wide cross was made with two-by-fours and attached to a metal frame.
    Obama's Attorney General
President-elect Obama has decided to tap Eric Holder as his attorney general, putting the veteran Washington lawyer in place to become the first African-American to head the Justice Department, according to two legal sources close to the presidential transition.

Holder, who served as deputy attorney general during the Clinton administration, still has to undergo a formal “vetting” review by the Obama transition team before the selection is final and is publicly announced, said one of the sources, who asked not to be identified talking about the transition process. But in the discussions over the past few days, Obama offered Holder the job and he accepted, the source said. The announcement is not likely until after Obama announces his choices to lead the Treasury and State departments.
Al-Qaida No. 2 insults Obama in new audio message
CAIRO,Egypt (AP) - Al-Qaida No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahri insulted Barack Obama in the terror group's first reaction to his election, calling him a demeaning racial term implying that the president-elect is a black American who does the bidding of whites.

The message appeared chiefly aimed at persuading Muslims and Arabs that Obama does not represent a change in U.S. policies. Al-Zawahri said in the message, which appeared on militant Web sites Wednesday, that Obama is "the direct opposite of honorable black Americans" like Malcolm X, the 1960s African-American rights leader.

Al-Zawahri also called Obama—along with secretaries of state Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice—"house negroes."

Speaking in Arabic, al-Zawahri uses the term "abeed al-beit," which literally translates as "house slaves." But al-Qaida supplied English subtitles of his speech that included the translation as "house negroes."
Gee, does this mean that Obama has been booted out of the "Muslin" Terrorist Club?

Democratic officials: Daschle accepts HHS post
Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle has accepted President-elect Barack Obama's offer to be Secretary of Health and Human Services, Democratic officials said Wednesday.
Sen. Clinton weighing secretary of state post
Associates of Hillary Rodham Clinton and her husband say the former first lady is weighing whether to leave the Senate and become secretary of state, believing the job is hers if she wants it.

Obama transition officials say other candidates have been vetted for the job, but the New York senator has emerged as the leading contender and the vetting of former president Bill Clinton has been particularly intense.
Hoping to ease concerns about possible conflicts of interest, Bill Clinton has agreed to publicly disclose the names of all donors who have given more than $250 to his presidential library and foundation.
Obama is 1st Columbia graduate to become president
It's taken two and a half centuries but Columbia College, one of the oldest in the nation, finally will have one of its alumni in the Oval Office.

And if the transition chatter is accurate, Barack Obama will choose as his attorney general Eric Holder, another graduate of the 254-year old Ivy League college on New York's Morningside Heights.
Early, absentee voting pushed Obama to win in Fla.
More Floridians voted for John McCain than Barack Obama on Election Day, but the Democrat sealed his victory in the state by winning more early and absentee votes.

An Associated Press study of 94 percent of the state's total shows that the Republican beat Obama by almost 5 percentage points on Nov. 4, but Obama trumped McCain by 11 percentage points in early and absentee balloting.
Dems: Napolitano emerges for Homeland Security job
President-elect Barack Obama is likely to choose Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano to be secretary of homeland security, top Obama advisers and several Democrats said Thursday as the shape of Obama's Cabinet begins to emerge.

A New York elementary school has been re-named in honor of President-elect Barack Obama. Ludlum Elementary School in Long Island's Hempstead Union Free School District was re-named at a board meeting Thursday, at the request of numerous school students.

"Just to watch these kids after the board voted on what they asked them to do, they were so elated," school district superintendent Dr. Joseph Laria told ABC News. "You want to talk about "Yes we can!"? That was a lesson in democracy."

If you haven't heard by now, the new Secret Service code names have been chosen. Note: Even though the names are by the Secret Service, they are not secrets, so I'm not putting anyone in danger by listing them.

    Barack: Renegade
    Michelle: Renaissance
    Malia: Radiance
    Sasha: Rosebud

    And the Bidens:

I'm mostly disappointed in the economic team Obama has put together. Some, especially, Larry Sumers laid the foundation for the mess we are in now. Really mystifying.

  24. #424

    Default

In what way? Summers has spent much of his career as an academic & just a few years in a top role at federal goverment (for the Clinton administration, which achieved a balanced budget & a healthy economy). He has had nothing to do with the economic policy of the last 7.75 years that led to all of the excesses in the credit markets.

Really, the current mess isn't even something that Bush did. It is mostly a function of the explosion that has taken place, in the last 4-5 years, of the amount of leverage that outfits like Goldman Sachs were allowing themselves to use to make other investments (not just mortgages but "insurance bets" that the values of those mortgages would keep rising). These were "bundled" and "churned" and sold & re-sold internationally so that the leverage would be something to the tune of 45-1.

So a modest mortgage of $100,000 would somehow become "security" for $4.5 MILLION in investments. OK, so we can blame Clinton (or go way back to Jimmy Carter, even), for supporting policies that encouraged a lower-income person to buy a $100,000 house.
But in the past (Clinton or even early Bush), a $100,000 default (or even a slew of them in one neighborhood), would have been a local problem, confined to one bank or one region.

It is the widespread international speculation (like a worldwide casino run amok) that caused this problem, not any policies that Summers/Clinton had.

Now, Summers is pretty much known as a jerk on a personal level. That's why it was pretty smart of Obama to give him an advisory post, but give the No. 1 economic spot to the more mild-mannered Geithner.
