Thread: Michelle's "EOE" moves Midori Ito to tears

  1. Default Michelle's "EOE" moves Midori Ito to tears

Here's an interesting perspective from a definitely knowledgeable skating observor who was at the GPFinals -- specifically, the ladies SP, which some criticized the U.S. judge for placing Michelle first: Here's what Midori had to say:

    Friday Feb. 16, 2001
Today's my only standing ovation was for Michelle Kwan. For her flawless landing of jumps including triple lutz and double toe loop in combination, steady spins, steps and spiral sequence in such a beautiful flow. I was really moved, to tears actually.

Irina Slutsukaya was also perfect, however. Her combination jump was triple lutz and double loop, and she showed stunning spins including Biellmann spins by each leg as usual. I was so happy to watch their competing with both perfect SP.

Guess the Iskater report of the audience response to Michelle's "East of Eden" must have been very accurate. Here's Midori's homepage where she'll be posting other reports. It will be interesting to see what she has to say about the free programs of all the ladies.

    Default OMG, how nice!

That would be cool to get Midori's reaction on tv. This goes on my list as one of my fave audience reactions.

That is about as sincere a reaction, and a true statement, from another skater other than Peggy that I have ever read. Michelle, you are always number one in my heart.

And Valerie, no matter how many times I see that quote, it still rings true.

    Default on to worlds

Here's hoping that Michelle gets a later draw than Irina at worlds, so
the judges will at least consider giving her the presentation marks she
    deserves.
I wish she would consider a 3lutz 3toe for the short! That would really
put some pressure on, and I think she's got enough room. I was watching
the "best of" tape, and its interesting to watch how the 3lutz 2 toe has
improved from 1995? (can't remember the year) until now.

  7. Default Oops! That isn't THE MiDori Ito ....

the comments about GPF and Michelle's skating are by a MiTori Ito .... (or maybe even Ito Mitori?). I apologize for making such a blind "leap of faith" when I found this link on the unofficial GPF site -- and have only my lack of sleep to offer as an excuse for my failure of discernment. 1000 apologies! I wish there was an edit feature so that I could alter the subject line.

AYS: I'm so very glad that you posted the link on FSW as you did -- without the false attribution or any embellishments. You have my utmost gratitutde!

It's still a very real and heart-warming tribute to Michelle's skating --- just not from a fellow World Champion and Olympic silver medalist. Again, I'm sorry!

The judging is getting so bad that I wonder if they are even watching the programs anymore. I mean, I give Slutskaya the technical edge, she's a wonderful technician. But, a 5.9 for presentation is totally unjustified unless she's somehow improved her posture and her lines a thousand-fold. It bothered me so much because they are saying, she's just a bit off of perfection in her presentation, when she's far from it. Two judges agreed in giving Slutskaya a 5.9 for presentation and a 5.8 to Kwan. Don't get me wrong, Slutskaya expresses the music just fine, but I just don't think she's on the artistic level of Michelle Kwan or even Maria Butyrskaya.

ITA with Triple Lutz on this. I am quite disappointed with the judges on a few occasions this season, but let's not get into that. I personally do not really disagree with the sp result, but I think Irina's marks are way too generous even on technical merit. I know speed is an important aspect in skating, but it isn't EVERYTHING. I think the current trend is to reward speed and 3/3s hugely and put less emphasis on sublte things like pointed toes, extension and edging etc. That to me is extremely frustrating but heck, what can we do about it.

anyhow, I am happy Michelle skated another clean sp (I think she hasn't missed a sp this seaosn yet?) and nearly landed 2 3/3s in the same day.

    Default thanks!

Thanks for bumping this Valerie, I never saw it!

That's so sweet, and I totally agree with Midori. The website says it's Mitori Ito with a "t". It's still THE Midori though right? Or is her name spelled with a "t" instead of a "d"?

Anyways, that was wonderful. Thanks for posting!

awwww that is so sweet of Midori!!! I really like her. She is so honest and she loves skating dearly.

maybe in japan a t and d are the same or interchangeable. Are maybe we have been spelling her name incorrectly because It just makes sesnse for that to be her with her having a webpage and being there plus the name being so similar

    Default Can someone please ...

clarify? ... why can't the panel of judges at the Olympics be former Olympians???? ...

How awesome would it be to have Midori Ito, et. al. serve on the judging panel ... then, IMHO, an Olympic Gold would be oooooooooooooh so meaningful!!!! ...

Default Mitori is not the Midori

I am Japanese and just happened to find this web site.
please let me solve a little bit of misunderstanding here.
the comments quoted on the top as Midori Ito's is actually not THE Midori Ito's words. That comment were written by
M i t o r i Ito--I do not know this guy--supposedly a huge figure skate fan in Japan. the URL quoted will take you to his page, and the Midori ITO's official website is now closed.

Now the Midori Ito reportedly hospitalized or is ill here in Japan--no one knows details.
