Grace, I'm not Erin lol, but about the contact paper- my guess is that you're thinking about contact papering your banner for safekeeping? Anyway, the cantact paper we used for the big "KWAN 2006 We Believe" banner was fine. Some contact paper looks a little opaque (sp?) before you put it on whatever you're covering, but once it's on and pressed down it's perfectly clear. I have a bunch of posters hanging on my wall that are contact papered too and everything is clear. Oh, and if you used the relatively thin banner paper that we used and you want to hang it up for multiple uses then I definitely suggest contact paper. Erin feel free to add anything this sista may have missed.
And I want to see a picture of the whole thing too, pretty please? lol

Thanks for the reviews and pictures, everyone!

  6. Default photo

i used a digital rebel camera, and sigma lense f2.8 (i think??)

i had the zoom opened most of the way in the beginning, somehow, i didn't have the zoom opened for sasha's, mk's, and Tatiana & max's programs, so they are not as close, but i will go back and fix them.

i used the shutter speed of 1/400

Heather, I don't leave the photos on my yahoo folder very long, usually 1 month at the most. so if you want them for your site, you can pm me an email address, and i will email you the photos, which you can put on your site. all i ask is:

    1) don't alter the photos except zoom in, lighten etc. no smiley faces or things are allowed to drawn on the photos

    2) don't share/link with other sites

otherwise, just pm me. if you put a link to the yahoo photo, the link won't work after 1 month. i have the artesia stuff for you too, i just need to scan them.

oh yea, about the mk cousin comment.... when i first saw her, she kept looking at me, and i couldn't figure out why. and she would pass by me and not sign the shirt i had. so i finally got furthur in line, and she did sign it, but she still looked at me funny. and then she said that comment, so now it all makes sense why she looked at me funny... :b

the funny thing is, i have met her 3 times before, and she never said that to me before??!!

I don't understand what the "MK cousin comment" is all about. Did I miss something or is it an inside joke?

Oh, and thanks to everyone again for their reviews and all the photos!

In regards to the sign, instead of clear contact paper, I'd suggest getting it laminated. If you go to a "teacher's store" they have laminators and it is 29 cents a foot, which isn't too bad (compared to Staples, Kinko's etc). It will be perfectly clear and it is a bit stronger than just regular contact paper.

As for backstage passes, they are given out to friends and family members of the skaters, sponsors, etc. One reason there are so many in Anaheim, is because there are a lot of skaters on the tour that have friends and family and skating students in the area. For example we were standing next to a group of young girls and Jenny Kirk is one of their skating coaches. The LA area is such a big training area a lot of people have connections so that is why there are so many passes. There isn't a specific limit per city. It is just done n an as needed bais per city. They stamp the city name on your pass and that is it. So some cities may have 20 and others may have 200 (Anaheim had 210).

    Thank you Oreo.

I have no idea of the specific location but we were on our way back from LA to Anaheim.

It didn't look like a particularly new rink so I don't think it's the one Danny Kwan is building.

TwinnerA, Michelle told babyoscar that she looked like her cousin- that's where the comments are coming from.

I hadn't even thought of laminating the banner. We kind of decided spur of the moment we needed to do something so we ran across the stree from the hotel and bought whatever we could find lol. It's worked out really well though because it's heavy enough to protect it, but we can just fold up the banner to put in suitcase to carry. I don't even know how many times it's been hung at this point. Lamination would be stronger than contact paper, but if it's the lamination I'm thinking of that they used in Elementary school and stuff it's pretty hard so you wouldn't be able to fold up the banner after it was laminated, which could be a problem. Is there a lamination that's not so heavy?

Thanks for the info about the Ice Palaces. I had no idea it was such a common name. Sorta similar to Ice Castle Which do you prefer, a castle or a palace? lol

I laminate all of my stuff for work, and I can easily roll up the posters to store them in the closet when I am done with teh unit. For the signs and banners I bring to Nationals I always roll them up in a tube (like an old wrapping paper tube). The laminating I use is still flexible enough that I can roll the things up and put in that tube. If you wanted fold it you coudl still do that too. It just helps give it a little bit of extra protection. I know there is the really stiff kind of laminating you can use (think of luggage tags), but just regular laminating stuff is still rather flexible.

Dawn, what do you mean by "teacher store"? You mean a kind of mom&pops store? I wanted to laminate it, but I figured Kinkos would be much too expensive.

are you able to actually fold the banner without kinks?

I need to fix the banner a bit more before I get it laminated.

And lol, my review of Anaheim will come soon - it'll be short, but I'm just so lazy right now

    Default teacher's store

I am pretty sure she means a store that sells educational supplies to teachers. I don't think there is any chain type store for teaching supplies. You may want to check your yellow pages for a local one.

I have heard of stores called "Teaching Tools" here in Arizona, so I think there are stores devoted just to teachers!

By teacher's store I meant someplace like Lakeshore (but I think that is only in So Cali.) Every semi decent sized city has stores that are devoted to selling teaching supplies and materials.

If you look in your yellow pages there should be a listing of them, and then just call them and ask if they laminate and how much it is. Most of them are self serve laminating, and that is definately something you can do yourself. It is basically putting your poster on the machine and hitting a button. lol The only problem would be if the width of it is larger than a poster board size, as then it would be too large to fit in the machine. (It can be of any length though).

Thank you all who attended and shared your wonderful reports and pictures. I wasn't able to go this year, but I feel like I've been there with many of you. Your stories and pictures are uplifting treasures, and I appreciated every one of them.

Welcome Sujinee, and special thanks to you for arriving at MKF with pictures and stories to tell. .

Dang, is it time for kwanette to take down the wooden skates and hang up the flag again already? This year just whistled by.

And we'll have fun, fun, fun, until
    Speedy takes our skating awaay!

I guess I am just thinking of the really hard lamination. Well I hope you can find somewhere Grace because lamination would be a whole lot easier than trying to contact paper the whole thing...and I am speaking from experience here! But it was fun haha.

It was a labor of love, Kimo!
The contact paper works really well, being toted and folded and hung all over the place. Yea, lamination was actually my first thought as well, but the banner wouldn't fit in my machine. Plus I could have had it done for free if I convinced the Education department it was for my classroom... That would have been fun!

*screams* Graaaaaaaaaace! Let's go with that review! What, do you have, like, *other* things to do?!?!

Hi too Grace...where's my shirt ?

I had a kwanderful time as well ! Got to eat with lots of lovely MKFers at the luncheon and had a great time afterwards too. I won't repeat the reviews of the skaters, rather just say I had fun and I really enjoyed Michelle (duh!). Big thanks to rationality52 for the stuffed animals. It was really sweet of you to go to all that trouble.

I got to go backstage downstairs again this year courtesy of my sister who asked Bebe Liang (who we saw in the corridor afterwards) for her last pass (THANK YOU BEBE AND PAM!). I was behind the barrier at first and saw Danny Kwan waiting by a table holding two FedEx boxes. I didn't want to bother him, but I caught his glance one of the many times I glanced at him waiting for the skaters and we smiled at each other. I did get to go in front of the barrier by simply following other people who did it. The security wasn't being that strict downstairs, probably because there were SO many people behind and in front of the barrier. All the skaters were very nice, and I managed to say a little something to each one without totally embarrassing myself . I'm usually so tongue-tied and shy, that I can't seem to say anything or I say something stupid :o . I told Victor that I really enjoyed his skating still, and he said "Really?", I said yes, that his jumps today were great (he did a 3t? at the end of the rink away from me, but it looked fantastic! Also, they were coming so fast and I had two programs for them to sign and they were very nice about waiting for me to switch them and flip the pages since several times they were one right behind the other. I went down the elevator with Angela, but I didn't say anything more to her. I had told her good luck next season upstairs, then didn't see her until she got on the elevator with a guy and a toddler. So cute! I don't know who he was though, but they were speaking to each other in Bulgarian, I think. What was strange to me is that Angela and Bebe both had the red sticker VIP passes, so they were behind the barrier! I would have thought they'd both be in front of it.

I missed Michelle, Tanith and Pang & Tong downstairs, so I went outside to hopefully catch them. Yes! Michelle was one of the last, but she signed my FOG pic for me. I said it was my favorite pic and she said it's one of hers too ! She even added "To Sharon" for me ! She's just so beautiful and Tanith is too. Jian was really nice and came back from the bus to sign when we called him and we spoke a very little bit of Chinese to him and he answered back in English - I guess he's practicing . He was also very nice enough to send Qing out from the bus to sign for us. She was really sweet too. My sister Donna speaks a little bit of a few lanquages (she's good at that, I have NO ability at all) and spoke to Irina for a few minutes and said a few words to Victor, who said she spoke very well. She also told my other sister Pam what to say to Gwendal, just kind of smiled and then laughed when she asked him if she called him something bad .

Well, that ends my report, hope to see everyone next year!!!

Wait, was there a review of the Anaheim show itself?? Did I miss it? Well, in any event, thanks so much for the backstage reviews :b Michelle continues to rach!

Wow, all the pictures from the Anaheim show are awesome. Michelle LOVED the sign that Grace & Yvonne made. She wanted to pose with it, sign it etc., it was cool to watch.

It was wonderful to see all the MKFers prior to the show. Sharon, it was fun sitting next to your sister, she was really nice. Jack, the stuffed animals were so cute, it was a very sweet of you to share will all of us.

The show itself was really good. I don't think there were any bad performances. I enjoyed both the opening and closing routines and loved all the costumes, especially in the opening.

I really, really enjoyed Pang & Tong. He was really interesting to watch. I found my eyes drawn more to him, but they were both wonderful. Both Ice Dance teams were awesome. It was so cool to see Gwendal again. He is such a sweetheart to talk to. I think he really loved the Starwars act and we joked it should be used for the trailer. Naturally Michelle was a joy to watch. I don't like the song but when she skates it doesn't really matter what she skates to.

I'm very upset with the prices for next year. At Anaheim, to sit 1st row will be $160, to sit VIP will be $125. That is sickening IMO, and it makes me very angry.

**after looking at Evan's pictures again I was reminded how awesome Jenny looked in her dark red costume. We told her and she said she's tried different colors during the last two years but wasn't sure about next year. We said she should really consider using dark/bright colors because they looked awesome on her. I think Anna talked to her about next years program and mentioned how cool her COI program would be as an LP. Jenny said she was really considering it because she loved skating to it.
