Thread: Does Sasha copy Michelle's actions?

  1. Default Does Sasha copy Michelle's actions?

I am just going to say it, and please argue with me if you disagree. But it seems to me that Sasha always seems to copy Michelle's actions with regards to her skating career.

Here are only a few examples:

    a) MK drops out of the Grandprix in 2003.
Sasha decides to drop out of the Granprix as well.

    b) MK never makes any excuses for a poor showing: Olympics '98 and Worlds '99.
Sasha is usally the "Queen of excuses": the ice crew wrecked the ice, spider bite, etc. However, at the Olympics, she somehow developed this new Kwanesque character where she called her silver medal a "gift" and the media kind of embraced her amazing sportmanship.

    c) MK takes a year off of skating this year, mostly due to injury.
Sasha decides to take a year off of skating this year. She wants to give her body some downtime. (Hmmmm. Sounds familiar)

These are only a few examples off of the top of my head.

I have always gotten the feeling that Sasha has been jealous of MK's popularity. Who wouldn't? Sasha has everything it takes to be a champion, but she just can't top MK. It was especially evident during the Olympic season, when Sasha would always try to defer any question regarding Kwan.

I don't know how to look at it. I guess imitation is the best form of flattery. But I just find it ironic, that Sasha doesn't seem to like MK, yet she copies every move Kwan has ever made. Whether she likes it or not, MK pushes her. Without MK, she probably lacks some motivation.

The only thing is that I find MK's actions to be more authentic and genuine.

I am not so sure if she considers it copying, but maybe she thinks well is MK can do it so can I. How can I explain it better, she perhaps had ideas of taking time off but she waited until the example of Michelle went over ok. Then since it seemed ok for MK to do it, she finally gave in and did what she was already thinking about. Does this make sense? Besides, I wonder if it feels not as great for her since MK is not there for Sasha to best???

the idea of taking a year off or limiting a schedule was not invented by Michelle Kwan.

MK is a role model. She has set a standard for those who follow. So what's wrong with Sasha taking cues from MK? I can't think of a better person to emulate.

First off......I hope no one turns this thread into a Sasha bash.

Second....While I do feel Michelle has been more genuine in her actions, we all know that Michelle has been a great role-model & example for other skaters, and I think that since Sasha is now older & wiser, she has learned to take the Kwan route.

I do feel Sasha wants to come across as more gracious and be a role model for others. I think she also wants to take a day-by-day approach, like Kwan, and not close any doors.

I think Sasha found Kwan's approach to work well, and is applying it to her own actions.

ITA that Sasha could not pick a better role model to emulate than MK.

    Scootie,
I also wonder if Sasha has injuries. Not specific, but she seems somehow fragile to me. So maybe she does need to rest her body so she can be in top form in 09 and 10. Does this make sense?

    Sure does.

Remember she even had that issue with her hamstring (?) this year? I remember the rumors swirling around about her being injured at the Olympics.

Michelle has had a great deal of influence on Sasha, no matter how anyone characterizes it.

I have to wonder if Sasha is not somewhat lost without Michelle on the scene. It's like have your nemesis - the person that you most want to "beat/ exceed" and when they are gone -- your anchor/rock - reason for competing is as well. So you become "lost" so to speak.

Acting is something that Sasha can do without being compared to her nemesis -- she will never take the silver globe -- because they only give golden globes. She has received lots of attention for her acting -- no one sticks a mike in her face and says " well Sasha - what happened there -- ya know when you flubbed your line?" :-)

I actually feel for her -- I will always be a die hard Michelle fan (because of the person she is within). I hope that Sasha finds her inner peace -- she just truly seems "lost".

Honestly I don't think it's a matter of copying, it's a matter of maturity. Sasha is growing up. I think a lot of the grace and well roundedness that Michelle has had has come with years. Remember Michelle burst onto the scene a lot younger then Sasha did. She's had more time to become accustomed to the spotlight and pressures of the elite world of skating. The attention of the media has been on Michelle for years, while for Sasha it has been a relatively new (compared to Michelle) experience. While I feel that personality also has a lot to do with it as well, Michelle has also had a more mature and stable "camp" IMO. Sasha seems like she's a very independent and fiery lady. I don't really see her as the copying type. I think any decisions she makes are what she feels is best for her. I'm sure whether she admits it or not though, somehow and someway Michelle has influenced her. I don't think many ladies skater's of the past 10 years can say that there wasn't at least some part of Michelle or her skating that didn't influence them, whether it was the decision to take up skating, her grace and humility, or the effort to make their spiral better I mean come on, she's been the unwavering standard, flying high and determined for over a decade

Well, Michelle and Sasha are 2 people in very similar situations--both skaters who have been very successful and popular for a long time in the same sport. It doesn't surprise me that their careers have a lot in common. I think you could make a case that a lot of skaters make similar choices. All of the career choices you mentioned sound pretty generic to me.

I think that she realizes that Michelle Kwan had a large fan base because she owned up to how she skated. Sasha did make a lot of excuses. I think that she needs to realize that she still has a lot of growing and maturing to do.

I never be a Sasha fan. With that said, I still feel that there is no basis for such speculation of her being a MK copy cat. Sure, I somewhat feel that what she says in public is getting sounds very similar to what MK has been saying for years, but making a decision on her competition schedule must be nothing to do with what Michelle does. More and more skaters are expressing frustration on the highly challenging competition schedule that ISU sets nowadays and there are other skaters besides Sasha and MK who pulled out of the GP event(s) in the past, so as taking a year off in the post-Olympic season.

Sasha has her strong interest in fashion, designing, (and acting, too), while Michelle has her interest in education and public service.

Sasha read a lot of books before the Olympics and I do think she read Michelle's book on how to deal with things. I think it's a good thing. I also think Sasha has always had other things she wanted to do like acting and cooking. She seems to really enjoy cooking and I know she took some classes. I also think Sasha was truly tired after the Olympics. I think the lost at Olympics and Worlds took something out of her just like I think the 98 Olympics took something from Michelle.

    Question

    >>>the ice crew wrecked the ice, spider bite<<<

Whoa! When did she use these excuses? I don't recall (and of course I don't follow Sasha at all so I probably wouldn't know when she'd made up these excuses), but really the ice crew wrecked the ice? Man alive.

Sasha talked about the ice at worlds in 03 and maybe someone else. I know I could see a puddle of water on top of the ice ( I think at '03 worlds).

This was stated after the competition was over....Sasha had shingles at 04 Nationals and a spider bite at some other competition.

Let's not forget the drill team...
I didn't realize that Sasha had shingles at the 04 Nats...I thought that she said that she had forgotten that she had them..

    Default Not really

I think Sasha has her own agenda, beating Michelle being one of them, so of course there was an influence. Sasha didn't want to be like Michelle, she wanted to be better. Why do we see such an amazing spiral, spins, and split jump? They are better technically than Michelle [I'd give MK the higher artistic mark]. I think she was pushed by competing against her, I doubt she is following in Michelle's footsteps.
I also think she's taking some time off (not as active in figure skating) because this is after the Olympic year, she could have won gold and she is probably a bit burned out.
Plus she has some opportunities open to her so why not step through those doors? You can't always skate but you might be able to do the Hollywood scene for a while.
I haven't been a "Sasha fan" in the strict sense of the word because Michelle is my #1 all time skater. But I do have a great appreciation for Sasha's elegance and superior movement on the ice. I think she is an accomplished figure skater in her own right.

You know that I can't remember exactly what was said because it was always something after the competition. Most of the time I was just too happy that Michelle won.

Sasha didn't think she was better than Michelle. She knew she was. That's what everyone around her kept telling her because she could spin and put her leg up to the sky....nevermind her feet. ....Sasha better technically than Michelle....not even.

I think Sasha and her PR team have taken a lesson from Michelle, but you only get one chance to make a first impression.

i agree, and i think its funny how her fans are attacking michelle because michelle only skated in nationals, and worlds. and that it is okay for sasha since she only taking one year off and kwan did it many times. but now sasha might take two years off. let see how her fans say about that now. xP

    Default The Charlotte

The only thing I can think of that Sasha copied from Michelle is doing the Charlotte in one of her routines, LOL! (This after MK brought it back out of the past of skating history in her routines.)
