Thread: Idea for threads

    Lightbulb Idea for threads

I've noticed that some folks get annoyed when there are multiple threads running on certain skaters at any given time (even though there isn't any rule against it in the Skating Chat area, as long as the topics aren't duplications).

Now that we're heading into the new season , it occurred to me that it might be helpful to set up our threads ourselves with a max of two for each skater, such as:

    Sasha/On Ice
    Sasha/Off Ice
    Johnny/One Ice
    Johnny/Off Ice
    etc., etc.

That way, each new topic on a skater (such as an appearance at an event, or a new photo) could be added to an existing thread, without a flurry of new threads dominating the 1st page of Skating Chat.

Just an idea I'm throwing out there for reaction; I'm not trying to "play mod" or anything.

I guess I like the various threads just for the economy of length. I don't care about Sasha at the HBO deal, but was a bit interested in seeing the "Got Milk" ad....so I'd hate to have to wade through a endless thread on every little off ice thing a skater does and all the conversation about it to find a few small tidbits I'm interested in. Likewise, if you want to talk about a skater's performance at a specific event, you probably don't want to scroll through a very long "on ice" thread with discussions of their costumes, music etc...to get to it.

It seems to me that the smaller threads are easier to deal with. JMHO

I agree with amielou -- give me a million small threads over a handful of big ones anyday.

I could see limiting Off Ice activities discussion (appearances, modeling, acting, etc. that have zilch to do with skating) of any given skater to one thread each, given how this is 'Skating Chat.'

That would be a good compromise, right?

A thread like this was started in Forum Feedback about a month ago. Yzerbear had a great idea of having a sticky thread (similar to the “2006 COI Reports and Picture Links Only: For Those on the Run =D” thread in MK Chat) where the admins could post direct links to articles about certain skaters.

My idea is similar, but the only difference is, that the admins wouldn't have to do anything but sticky the thread. The members would have to do ALL the work. lol
By creating this sticky thread there won’t be a new thread started every time Sasha or Johnny have a new journal entry or every time Tara goes Hollywood.
By sticky’ing this one thread, you’ll simply have to click the link of the appropriate skaters name and be redirected to their thread, no matter what page in Skating chat it’s on.

Example- If someone starts an Official Sarah Hughes thread in Skating Chat and an article on Sarah is discussed for awhile, the discussion stops and the thread ends up on page 4 after a few days of no new posts. If someone wants to post a new Sarah article, instead of starting a new thread or having to search for her official thread, all they’ll have to do is go to the sticky thread, find her name, click on it and be taken directly to her thread.

The first post in the sticky thread would look like this:

    Tara Lipinski
    Sarah Hughes
    Johnny Weir
    Naomi Nari Nam
    Oksana Baiul
    Maria Butyrskaya
    Brian Boitano
    Evgeny Plushenko
    Lu Chen

    etc.

Again, each skaters name would actually be a link to their thread. By simply clicking on the skaters name, you’re taking directly to their thread, where you can post the new article and of course in the process, bumping the thread up to the top of page one in Skating Chat where it can be discussed.

As far as having to search through the thread to find past articles and post; It may be better to have all the info in one place rather than several small threads. Not everyone has the time to stop by everyday, every other day or even week, so they may end up missing the article completely.
Having all the articles and discussions in one place will make it easier to find info on the skater and help to cut down on double posts of the same article.

I hope the admins will go for it, because I’ve coerced Alejandro into hooking us up with 1 “Official (Skater) thread” already and he should be finished with the second one soon. It took a long time for me to find all the links and info on the skaters, and he’s been working a long time to put it all together.

I think the problem I have is the problems stated above.

On one hand, I love all the topics of the skaters grouped in one thread. I've seen this done in many other forums (though actors / singers vs. skaters). However, I can see the problem of the growth of the thread going to several hundred pages, though it keeps the forum very organized. Another way we could do it is a subforum for each skater.

If we do separate on ice/off ice with each skater having their own thread getting kind of messy in organization, because sometimes articles talk about both off ice or on ice and then would have a problem with placement.

I'd like to hear more suggestions for a compromise.

    Hi Grace,
How’s the upgrade and sleep going?
All this blue and no Michelle banner is very depressing. lol

As far as the thread becoming too long; I’ve noticed that other forums that do this, close the thread after in gets too long. They just start another one.

I like the idea of starting a subforum for each skater. The only problem that may arise is multiple members starting threads on the same topic or missing the thread completely because it’s on page 2 or 3.
But all the skaters threads will be in one place, so that's a plus.

So, how about starting a subforum for each skater, and starting an “Official discussion thread” for the skater in their forum. When the thread gets too long, close it, start a new one, then edit the sticky thread to add the new thread link. (I still think there should be a sticky thread in each forum because we know it won't be long before there's a 50th Official Sasha Cohen discussion thread. lol)

The first post in the Tara sticky thread would look like this:

Official Tara Lipinski discussion thread 1 <---- Closed
Official Tara Lipinski discussion thread 2

The first post in the Johnny sticky thread would look like this:

Official Johnny Weir discussion thread 1 <---- Closed
Official Johnny Weir discussion thread 2 <---- Closed
Official Johnny Weir discussion thread 3
    etc.

I’ve already had a thread constructed for a certain skater. I could PM it to you if you would to see how it/they would look.

I am in agreement with amielou but if this is being seriously considered then why not do a poll of members to see which they prefer. Some may not want to post a reply in this thread but may answer a poll. (Just a thought to try) :-)

Hi Grace - I kind of like the idea of subforums, too. Just because it seems like it would be easier, say, to find the latest info about Sasha or NNN. I think having two threads (on/off ice) would be confusing, like amielou said, so I wouldn't like that as much. But then again, I don't have a huge problem with the way things are now! I think you and Heather do a great job, and I'll be happy with whatever you decide. (I know, I'm a big help, huh? )

I don't have a problem with the one thread thing (sort of like how we do official TV shows and sports threads in Random Chat), with them closing once they get to a certain number of posts/pages. I'm used to reading one long thread on other boards, though, and I can understand how some users wouldn't really like that, however. Personally, I really don't like the idea of having subforums for other skaters.

I'm up for having a poll to see others opinions on the subject.

I suggested the subforums in the “Where are they now (thread)?” thread last month, but after I thought about it for awhile I realised that it really wasn’t necessary (though a good idea all the same).
I think the mods and admins have a tough enough time keeping track of the hap’nins in the forums as is, so maybe adding more forums is not the best idea. lol

Since you and Grace both like the idea of having one thread for each skater, then imo (yes, it also has to do with the fact that it was my idea, ya’ll got me! lol), that’s the best way to go.

Anyway, if were going to do a poll (which I’m totally against because as a relatively new member, ya’ll know I probably won’t get any votes even though the admins like my idea... lol), then my suggestion is what I proposed in post 4 and 6 of this thread (minus the subforums).

TG, I don't think your novelty will keep people from voting for a good idea, if they like it.

I agree with aimelou. I hate having to wade through a thread to find what I want. 99% of the time I don't have any desire to open a johnny weir thread, but every once in a while there will be something that interests me. I don't want to open up a huge thread and read stuff I don't care about just to find something that I might like. Also I think that a thread could get confusing if there are several discussions about a skater going on at once. For example right now in skatin chat there are 2 or three Sasha threads. If we stuck them all in the same thread we'd have all the comments/discussions mixed together.
This is the reason I never read any of the COI reports, they are all in 1 thread and I don't want to wade through everything.

lol I was only kidding. Actually I first joined back in ‘03, but we were moving around allot that year so I lost track of the forum and my ID, so they really shouldn’t hold my “newbie” status against me. lol

Anyway, maybe the simple solution to the problem of duplicate threads, is for members to just take the time to check the current threads in the forum before starting a new thread, to make sure that one on the topic has not been started already.

As far as members being “tired” of seeing “Tara goes hollywood” threads or Johnny Journal updates or seeing multiple threads on certain skaters; well they really don’t pop up that often and like moxie said, if they’re not duplicate threads then it should be okay.

Lumping all the articles into one big thread may not be the best idea after all, as GoldenMichelle pointed out. It may become confusing after awhile.

You could start a fan listing for each skater. If you have an article on Sasha, send the article by PM to all the Sasha fans or Johnny fans etc.
This way only members who care to know what Sasha, Johnny, Sarah, Oksana or Tara are up to will get the article--cutting down on bashing as well.
If the article is really important--something everyone should know, then start a thread on it.

    Just a thought.

Interesting to see such a variety of responses.

I've never had a problem with separate threads; the reason I started thinking about this was the reaction to one paticular thread that recently popped up on Skating Chat. A member posted a quick item about Sasha having a new bio pic, and stated that she thought it looked nice.

For some reason, that prompted a rather snarky response from another poster, not really commenting on what was said, but complaining that this topic existed at all, when there were other Sasha threads. It prompted the original poster to apologize, even though posting this little thread was well within the rules of Skating Chat.

My initial, rather juvenile plan was to post a new, different Sasha thread each morning for a week or two ....

The more mature approach, of course, was to just ask if folks prefer one big thread or little separate threads. I'm with those who like the little separate ones. Just skip on by if it isn't of interest.

Yes, moxie, that was me who posted the Sasha bio pic thread. lol. I thought it would be ok, but if some people don't like it....like I said earlier, I'll be perfectly fine with whatever is done (or, as the case may be, not done!). I'm just happy to have a place like MKF where I, or anyone else, can post little bits of info regarding Michelle, Sasha, or anyone else.

I don't understand if someone has a problem with a Sasha thread even being there then why did they even open the thread in the first place? I don't know what the answer is because one cannot please everyone. I am glad for the mods and what they do and glad that they are the ones to decide these things because I could not make those decisions.

We're going to play some "trial and see how it goes" experimentation with this season esp. since our dear Michelle will not be a part of it.

I do agree it gets difficult wading through a huge thread finding information you're looking for and it also gets tiring. However, I've also seen it work effectively on many large forums I've visited, so in the meantime, we're going to see how this goes. I've been working on a subforum with skater threads. If it doesn't seem to work well at MKF, then we'll go back to separate threads. It is currently NOT revealed. I'm still in the process of working on it, but should be in effect in the next couple of days.

Remember, multi-quote is your friend, Subject title is your friend. This makes searching by post much, much, easier.
