Jester Please Read: Fun and Questions, ie FAQ, tip of the week thread! Tip #3 posted 5/16 (in post #18)

Yes, the F in FAQ stands for fun. Because I say so.

Even though we have been here at our new home for 5 months, I think there are still some aspects of the board that some members don't know about. Along with the fact that I know not everyone reads the FAQ, even though it's mandatory, I thought the offseason would be a good time to give a tip of the week.

This will not include the obvious things that EVERYONE should know about, such as searching and/or looking through the first 5 pages of the section before posting a new thread, to see if the topic has already been posted.

Tip #1: Not double posting consecutively within a thread

If you have just posted in a thread, and you want to add another point but no one else has posted in the thread in the meantime, please go in and edit your post to add the new information rather than posting again. This includes if you are quoting someone. A good rule of thumb is that if you posted within the last 30 minutes, and no one else has posted after you, then you should edit that last post with your additional thoughts. The only time this isn't required is during play by play threads in spoilers.

Here's an example of the double posts within the thread (scroll down to the 3rd & 4th posts):
    http://www.mkforum.net/forum/showthread.php?t=12702

If that wasn't a play by play thread in spoilers, those two posts should have only been one.

The moderators will merge consecutive posts together if they come across them. I find that I'm having to do this much too often.

The FAQ, since everyone should read through the whole thing.

    Any questions, let me know.

Doesn't everyone get the "edit" icon on their screen after they post? I know some run into trouble when they like to respond to different poster's quotes, but there is a way to put multiple quotes on one post, right? Where can I go to learn about that feature?

Yes, as long as you are logged in, you should see the edit icon.

To add quotes, all you have to do is copy what you want to quote, then type following (ignore the "HTML Code:" here, it's the only way I could get the code to show up)

    HTML Code:
    [QUOTE=username]this is what I'm quoting[/quote]
What that will end up looking like is:

Just do this for as many quotes as you want in your post.

Tip #2: Jumping to the first new post in a thread since you last visited

One of my favorite things of the new board, and I use it for every thread. This is especially helpful for large threads, like the COI reports & pictures threads. When you come back to the board the next day, rathering than finding where you left off somewhere on page 6, just do the following:

First, make sure you are logged in. Then, when you are on the board, all threads that have new posts since you were last on the board will be in bold. Next to these threads (all the way on the left), you should see a little blue icon with a white V in it. Click on this icon, and it will jump to the first new post since you have been in that thread.

For example, if when you last visted a thread there were 12 posts in a thread, clicking this icon will jump to the 13th post of the thread.

Or, you could click on the thread, and right under the "Add Reply" graphic, you will see the same icon I mentioned and then "View First Unread", if you click on those words, it will also take you to the first unread post in the thread. This will be at the top of every page in the thread, and will take you to the first unread post no matter what page it is on.

Any questions, please let me know!

Next week's tip will be on avatars (I said that would be this weeks, but I didn't realize everyone didn't already use this tip, so I decided to just jump ahead a few weeks for this tip!)

Yes this is a fun way to "school" us :-)
I read the FAQ's but don't remember them all. I like these friendly little reminders. :-)

Hopefully people are actually reading these tips! Though I've read the FAQ a ton of times... this is very useful for newer or FAQ ignorant users! Not being mean... just stating the faqs!

Heather, thanks for the tutorial. Somehow it makes more sense when you explain it one by one. I know all this takes time, you are great to do help everyone

Sorry I missed two weeks. The first week I was working on finishing my COI pics, the next week I just missed. But we're back with another tip! This is a fun one too!

PLEASE read tip #1 & #2 as well, thanks

Tip #3: Avatars--What they are and how to add them

What is an avatar? An avatar is the picture that you see above a member's username on the board when they post. A cool feature of this board vs ezboard is the avatars here can be bigger, 100x100 pixels vs the 60x60 on ezboard. Only about 20% of MKFers use an avatar. If you want to have use an avatar but don't know how to add one, this tip is for you!

There are two kinds of avatars: pre-defined avatars which are provided by the administrators, and custom avatars, which you can upload yourself.

    Pre-defined Avatars:
You can find all the pre-defined avatars that you can chose to use here:
    http://www.mkforum.net/forum/misc.php?do=showavatars

Once you've decided which avatar you want to use, go to your user control panel by clicking on "User CP" at the top of the forum page, then click on "Edit Avatar." Under pre-defined, use the drop down menu to chose the avatar maker's gallery. Then, select the avatar you want to use. Scroll down and click on "Save Changes", and you are done!

In the GraFX section, there is a thread which is updated any time new avatars are added to the custom avatar gallery. You can check it out here:
    http://www.mkforum.net/forum/showthread.php?t=9857

    Custom Avatars:

If you don't want to use one of the pre-deremined avatars, you can upload your own avatar to use on the board.

go to your user control panel by clicking on "User CP" at the top of the forum page, then click on "Edit Avatar." Scroll down to "Custom Avatar" and select "Custom Avatar." You can either upload an avatar that's already online, or one that's on your computer. To upload one that is already online, under "Enter Avatar URL", enter the URL of the image. To upload one that is on your computer, under "Upload an Avatar From Your Computer", click "Browse", find the image on your computer, and click ok. Then click "Save Changes." Your avatar is now added!

Avatars cannot be larger than 30k, and the dimensions cannot be more than 100x100. Make sure you have permission to use the picture or image used as your custom avatar. You can have a custom avatar of any subject (it doesn't have to be Michelle or skating related), but images with offensive or controversial content are prohibited.

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Thanks Heather! That was easy. Now, I keep wanting to go back every minute and look at my post just to see my avatar. Hopefully, that will wear off soon :-)
