Question 2006-07 Team Envelope & Intl. Assignments

O.k. now the Worlds is over. When do we expect to find out the new team envelope and international assignments for the next season?

    Thank you!

The criteria for next season's team envelopes is posted here:
    http://www.usfigureskating.org/shell.asp?sid=30630

As far as I can tell, MK technically doesn't qualify for an envelope since she didn't compete this year, and didn't medal at Worlds in 2005. But she might be on the reserve team, if they go by the book, or they might make an exception for her.

The team envelopes should look roughly like this, perhaps with additional skaters, or with some people bumped up to higher envelopes according to the additional criteria noted. Skaters are marked with a (*) if they have retired or have said they might not/will not compete next year. In parentheses, I put the reason(s) why they qualify for that envelope.

    -----------------------------------------------------
    Team A

Sasha Cohen (National champion, 3rd at Worlds)

You did a really thorough job, aethera! A few comments and one addition to B (Varner) by me...

    Team A
-Matthew Savoie - has announced he will not compete in 2006-07 as he will enter Cornell Law School this fall.
-Marcy Hinzmann & Aaron Parchem - *if* they decide to continue competing in 2006-07 (they've mentioned they would make the decision in May).

    Team B
-Michael Weiss - has announced his retirement from eligible skating.
-Mariel Miller & Rockne Brubaker - they split up before 2006 Nationals.
ADD to B: Geoffry Varner (3rd at JGP Final)

    Team C
-Ryan Jahnke - said in an interview after Nationals that he does not plan to compete in 2006-07 but has not officially retired.
-Timothy Goebel* - has announced his retirement from eligible skating.
-Aaryn Smith & Will Chitwood* - have split up since 2006 Nationals.
-Kaitlyn Weaver & Charles Clavey - have split up since 2006 Nationals.
-Kimmerly Lauten & Augie Hill - have split up since 2006 Nationals.
-Katie Beriau & Joe Gazzola would have qualified for Team C since they placed 3rd in the pairs event at Golden Spin even though they did not qualify for 2006 Nationals, but they have apparently split up (both are listed at icepartnersearch.com).

We'll have to wait and see if there will be any more changes (team splits, novice medalists at the upcoming Gardena Spring Trophy or Triglav Trophy) before these funding envelopes are officially announced during USFS' Govening Council in May. The first batch of international assignments (i.e., JGP) are usually announced at that time as well.

Geez can you imagine looking at the USFSA site and seeing Michelle as "Reserve"? When was the last time THAT happened? When she was 12?

Some people over at FSU and other places are pretty sure if Michelle decides to compete she'll be on the A team. At the very least USFSA can assign her to Skate America to compete (as each country has that right). Honestly, I think the USFSA will make an exception, she's Michelle Kwan after all!

    Hope that helps...

Thanks for your corrections, Sylvia! I hope you don't mind--I went ahead and incorporated them into the list. Man, how did I miss Michael Weiss retiring?!

I'm sure MK will get GP assignments if she decides to compete. Aside from that, don't the envelopes just determine how much financial assistance the USFSA gives? And she's certainly covered in that regard...

You're welcome. And you're correct, these envelopes are for funding purposes only and do not necessarily correlate to the types of international assignments the skaters will receive.

A note on team A: "Consideration for World senior medalists in the previous two seasons who have retained their eligible status and have committed to competing in the next competitve season within the past three years."

When they say "previous two season" do they mean 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 or do they mean 2004-2005 and 2005-2006? Because everything else in the categories applies to the current year ... if it does include 2003-2004, Michelle could be considered for Group A--and I'm sure she would be added.

I'm not sure. I assumed it was the latter, because the envelopes are for 2006-2007. But you're right, I bet she'd be put in Team A if it's the former...

A team envelope skater (A,B,C) is not guaranteed an international assignment, just a set level of USFS funding for the season. Chances are good, though, that most of the envelope skaters will receive at least one junior or senior international (if they are ISU age-eligible, etc.).

Re. Senior Grand Prix assignments in 2006-07, check out this ISU Communication about changes in skater selection that will be spelled out in the official GP Announcement to be published eventually:
    http://www.isu.org/vsite/vfile/page/...-0-file,00.pdf

Re. JGP assignments for the U.S. skaters: It's possible that USFS' International Committee will select a few skaters/teams for the JGP who are not listed in the *projected* A-C team envelopes above (based on the results/performances in certain summer monitoring competitions). If that's the case, the skater will be placed in the Reserve team envelope and, if the skater/team medals in their international, they will be elevated to Team C as a result.

    Go Michelle !

I think Michelle could be named to team A. If you consider her international ranking from last season, she was still higher than some of the U.S. skaters who competed throughout the year.

But, I don't think that technically factors into the process. It's just something on the back of their minds.

If Michelle competes next season, she would certainly receive a couple of GP offers.I think she would have to accept the GPs for any hopes of a bye out of doing Pac Coast sectionals.Michelle at sectionals would be kind of cool.I wonder if her prescence could finally push ESPN to cover a sectional event........just a thought.

Skaters can still help their status in the Gardena and Triglav events.I think Stephanie Rosenthal has a spot as a junior at the Triglav.

Sorry, Mike, it's Blake Rosenthal (2006 Novice ladies silver medalist), not Stephanie (8th in senior), who has the Triglav junior assignment. But I have my fingers crossed that Stephanie Rosenthal will receive a JGP assignment this fall (she will still be 18 as of July 1, 2006, and is ISU junior age-eligible for the 2006-07 season only).

If the 2 U.S. Novice boys (Brian Simm and Scott Dyer) medal at their respective spring internationals, they should be assigned to at least the Reserve team according to USFS' 2006-07 published envelope criteria.

No prob. There really was no way for you to know that because only "Rosenthal" is listed on USFS' International Assignments page.

For 2006-07 team envelope criteria, go to the following link:http://www.usfigureskating.org/Shell.asp?sid=30630. What team----if any---would Michelle be eligible for using these criteria?

Is that mean Michelle is qualify ?Please explain.Thank you

As I understand it, Michelle will have to qualify for Nats, independently of her Team envelope. Since she hasn't medaled at Worlds in the past two years, I don't think she qualifies for Team Envelope "A", However, as I understand it, these envelopes are for funding purposes -- and MK doesn't take USFSA funding anymore anyway. If MK was put in Team Envelope "B" or "C", would some other skater (who probably needs the increased funding) be kept out, or, can "one more" be added to the mix? Or, could the USFSA just open up a special "Team Envelope `K'"?

Having Michelle compete through Divisionals and Sectionals would be a logistical nightmare. The hosting clubs are just not prepared for the type of security they would need to have Michelle compete. Even if she were injured, the USFSA has eliminated medical byes so she wouldn't be able to compete at Nationals. Since there is really no way of giving her a bye under the existing rules unless she has conflicting international assignments, I expect Michelle to skate the GP events next season, if for no other reason than to give the USFSA an excuse to pass her on through to Nationals.

It's dumb, I know, but these are the rules.

What would likely happen is that the USFS would assign Michelle to competitions that conflict with the regionals and sectionals, therefore, she wouldn't have to compete at the lower level events to make the Nationals.

She would only compete at her internationals.
