Default Skating With The Stars - No Michelle this year

Figure Skating in Harlem is presenting its 2nd Annual Skating With the Stars, under the stars, at the Wollman Rink in New York Central Park.

This year they are honoring Debi Thomas and they have "invited" the following skaters:

Timothy, Johnny, Sasha, Evan, Sarah and Emily, Surya, Rudy Galindo, Dorothy Hamill, Viktor Petrenko, Plushy, Irina, Paul Wylie, Tai, Totimianina and Marinin, Marina and Gwendal, Besedin and Polishchuk (acrobats).

Note: Since Tom Collins is on the advisory board of FSH, the touring team of COI, usually attend fund raising events held by FSH.

Noticeably absent from the list of invited skaters is Michelle Kwan. I sent a letter to the benefit office asking why Michelle was not one of the invited skaters. I haven't received a response from them yet. (Actually, it is a busy week for skaters, COI is in Florida on Sunday, at the FSH on Monday, and many of the skaters will be in Greenville on Tuesday, and it might be too much for Michelle right now).

Last year many Michelle fans went to the event and had a wonderful time skating with her. The organizers also arranged photo ops with all of the skaters and you had a chance to mingle with the other skaters on and off the ice.

    If you're interested:

Date - April 10 (The day before the Marshall's event in Greenville)
    Time 6-9PM
Location: Central Park Wollman Rink, NYC
    The tickets cost $250 each.

O Gosh. Relax. Michelle wasnt invited. She may want morew time to herself, and to recover.
It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. That's just bizarre that MK wasn't invited. What, are they trying to make ticket sales go down?

Maybe she wasn't invited because the organizers knew she already had something planned for that day. Perhaps Tom Collins suggested that she not be invited because he knew she was already doing something for ABC, Disney, EastWest, or one of the thousand other thing she is committed to.

    Stop the worrying.

Is there no publicly available schedule of her planned events so that her fans can attend if they want to and can?

I would be interested in knowing why she wasn't invited, but really, why does it have to be a slight against Michelle? Maybe she turned them down. Maybe the want the "stars" of the '06 Games. Maybe she does have something going on. All I care about is that she's healthy and we can see her skate again, injury-free!

Yes, because the '06 Games were just blinding with the sheer brilliance of their "stars"....

That's strange -- Sarah is invited but Michelle isn't??

Michelle does not have an official website so the closest thing to an official list of apperances is at Heather's wonderful Michelle Kwan Fan Page, http://www.heatherw.com/mk/. I know that she keeps the site as up to date as possible.

But, when skaters are doing something sponsorship related like a photo shoot (which I am not saying that MK is doing because I have no idea!) would not appear on most skaters official schedules because its not open to the public.

I'm sure Michelle is doing well. And remember that the event is somewhat sponsored by Tom Collins. He is honestly one of the last people who would want to snub Michelle.

If you read the Champions on Ice website, and their press releases, there is nothing but gushing about her and how her stepping down from the Olympics was so graceful. She's their champion as much as ours.

    Ugg: lol

I'm sure it isn't a slight on their part unless FSH is shooting itself in the foot. Let's face it, Michelle was the big name draw there last year, as she would have been again this year. The purpose of this event is to raise the most amount of money possible. Without Michelle, they might not reach their target.

So, I wrote to FSH asking why Michelle was not on their invite list. I understand that the invite list does not mean that the skater(s) will attend. Last year although her name was listed in newspaper ads and on promotional materials, Sasha Cohen was a no show. I doubt if I will get an answer from FSH or if I do it will be so carefully worded as to be meaningless. It is possible that Michelle contacted them and said that she would be unable to participate this year.

Curious minds just want to know.

Edited to change is to isn't in the first sentence.

maybe michelle wants to rest? even though she didn't really compete this season, she sure has had a tough and exhausting season. plus the injuries and the long COI tour coming up, i wouldn't be shocked to hear that she CHOSE to not attend for her own benefit. actually, i would hope that she is resting her body.

I think if they listed her name it would indicate she might be there and they knew she would not be, so to head-off claims of false-advertising they had to leave her name off.

Since she'll be in Orlando right before the event, maybe she has a Disney committment on the next day?

That's the day before the Marshall's--there is nothing wrong with MK focusing on Marshall's. She is still recovering.

I might be reading between lines way much but if Michelle wants to be at the event to help kids, she must want to be 200% healthy to do such a job for the sake of kids' safety. I can easily see her taking such into consideration.

Where are people getting the idea that she wasn't invited? I find that hard to believe (FSIH would have to be REALLY stupid lol).

Anyway I got a postcard announcing it was coming up back in...January maybe (or earlier?) and MK wasn't listed then either.

The event is for a good cause. They not only have a full skating program, but they also progam homework help and tutoring services for the students.

Even though I won't be attending, (the $250 per ticket is a bit steep without a Michelle appearance), and I'll be seeing her at Marshall's on 4/11 and at COI on 4/29, I am sending FSH a check - mentioning that it is from a Michelle Kwan fan. If anyone would like to contribute, this is the address again:

So Marshalls is 100% sure thing? I am going to COI 4/23. Have fun. Nice thing you are donating too.

Maybe Michelle can't make it because that is the day she
will be taping the Oprah show.

Michelle is on the list of confirmed skaters for Marshalls. However, the U.S. Figure Skating Championships also listed Michelle as a confirmed skater so nothing is ever truly confirmed until the skater is on the ice.

Evan Lysacek is going to skate at "Skating With the Stars." He is more than invited according to his official site.

Well, the problem with this reasoning is that Timothy Goebel didn't go to the Olympics.

But, in all honesty maybe Michelle had a hundred other things on her plate. So, she told them "no thanks" politely. I mean Michelle does stay quite busy.
