Whatever you do with your figure skating career and life, I'll be cheering you on and wishing you the very best. I'm sorry to hear that you had to withdraw but your body was telling you not to do it and you did the right thing by listening to it. You'll always be a legend in figure skating no matter how much time passes by.

Exemplary in your sport for over a decade, you represent the success that is possible only with dedication to hard work over time. You represent determination, commitment, and the excellence required to beat competitors not just once every fours years but time and time again. Your career has been legendary, your passion is authentic and your artistry is original. You have no equal in this sport. Yours is a true success.

    Dear Michelle --
You are a beautiful woman, inside and out. I know that this is a dissapointment for you, but the reality is that a champion is defined by much more than their medals -- and you ARE a champion in every sense of the word -- with or without an Olympic Gold medal. You will go down in history as the best Ladies skater the U.S. has ever produced, and I will be proud to tell my grandchildren that I was lucky enough to have been around to see you skate.

Rest up and hugs and kisses from your fans.

This little debacle should not, and will not tarnish your legacy. Whatever you choose to do from now on, we support you.

    Dear Michelle

We love you just the same, if not more, after this season. You're TRULY A CHAMPION!

No other skater's skating can move me in the way your skating moves me. I find comfort in your skating when I'm down. I find joy in your skating when I'm happy.

Get well soon. We'll always be there for you!

    Love you.

I want to say thank YOU for all of the beautiful moments you've given us, both on the ice and off. You will always be the true Olympic gold medalist in my heart, and I'm sure in the heart of many others. What you have gained from your graciousness and sportsmanship goes beyond what any medal can give others.

    Dear Michelle,

Mere words cannot express how deeply sorry I was to hear about the unfortunate turn of events this morning. I was hoping so much that your dream would come true this time around. I saw your practice session on Olympic Ice and could just see in your face that something was very wrong. When I woke up to hear the news it just broke my heart.

I've been watching you skate for 10 years and you continue to bring such joy to the sport. It really amazes me how you handle yourself every time with such grace and integrity. I can only hope that the next generation of skaters prove to be as honorable as you have been and continue to be.

I admire you so much as well as your family for helping to shape you into the person you are. I wish you many continued successes in your life.

Never forget that your fans will ALWAYS be here to support you no matter what. Even though you will only meet a few of us over the course of touring and competitions, you are in the hearts, minds and prayers of so many around the world. We only want what is best for you. We love you so much Michelle!

    Heart Heart of Gold

Michelle, You have given us beautiful and memorable performances in your pursuit of the Olympic Gold Medal. I am one of the fans who believe you WON the Olympic Gold Medal in 1998. Your performances in Nagano were breathtakingly ephemeral in every way possible. However, it was during the 2002 Olympics exhibition performance of the "awesome" Fields of Gold" in Salt Lake City that I realised the most important aspect about your incomparable career. Who needs an Olympic Gold Medal when they have a Heart Of Gold! You rock my soul!! Now let your body heal and rest. You deserve all the love and support you will receive from your fans, family and supporters.
    A fan of your heart

    Dear Michelle,
I've grown up watching you skate and every time I saw you compete I wanted you to win. I'm truly sorry that you had to withdraw from the Olympics this time around, but I think your decision to do so demonstrates a tremendous amount of dignity and respect for the sport, two reasons why we all love you so much! In our eyes you are much more than an Olympic champion, you are a truly a champion in life due to the way you have handled yourself over your many years competing and the grace you have shown all these years. You may not have Olympic gold, but you've captured the hearts of many and to us you will always be our champion! You truly are a legend and not just for your accomplishments on the ice, but for the type of person that you have proven to be. I wish you much luck in whatever you choose to do next, whether it be on competitive ice or not. We will all be rooting for you and hope to have the opportunity to see you perform for many years to come!

You are one of a kind. I will always support you (as a fan) in all your endeavors and will treasure the many, many wonderful memories that you have given me on the ice. You have not only talked the talk, but have walked the walk. You are the real thing. In such a cynical, brutal world we live in, you have been the picture of grace, dignity and integrity.

Take care and know that as this experience gets smaller and smaller in life's "rearview mirror" know that you will be remembered as one of the greats, if not the greatest. YOUR LEGACY IS INTACT!

    Dear Michelle,

My heart is broken for you right now, and I am so sad to see your deep disappointment. I hope that you can go home and take care of yourself--I have faith that you will heal soon.

So often the media in the U.S. go for the quick sound bite, or the most hyped, or the easy answer. The Olympics are a great example of this--tons of publicity, so of course it is the biggest prize going to only the very finest skaters in history, correct? The short answer--no!! Please don't buy into
so-called popular opinion. I realize that Olympic gold was a dream of yours, but not having one in your closet in no conceivable way diminishes the magnitude of what you have accomplished. Your competitive record shows continuing excellence over more than a decade, and this is many times more worthy of admiration than a single, fleeting moment of glory.

But even if there were no medals, no championships, your skating speaks for itself. It is so magnificent, so thrilling, so touching, so unlike anything else I have seen in my decades of following the sport. You are adored by many, and no medals will change this. You wished to be a legend, and without a doubt, you are.

You handled yourself with such dignity through all of this, which doesn't surprise me in the least! Your character shines through when you skate, and I could see what a fine person you are when I met you briefly at an awards ceremony in Dallas. You are a true national treasure.

Selfishly, I hope you continue to skate forever! I know that you could continue to be successful in eligible competition, and you could probably
single-handedly revive the pro ranks. I am glad that you wisely followed medical orders to prevent permanent damage. But whatever you decide to do, in or out of skating, make your choices by listening to your heart and your dreams. We will support and love you regardless.

Thank you for all the joy you have brought us.

You have taught me a lesson I keep with me to this day: perspective on what is important in life. Without you, I may not have been able to handle so many disappointments in my own life, from college admissions, to heartbreaking academic disappointments, to many, many failed auditions, to even family turmoil that you usually only see on soap operas. But with you, with seeing how you've dealt with 4 Olympic frustrations, I've learned to appreciate what I do have. Even if I'm reduced to being alone for the rest of my life, penniless, I will always be grateful, because as you have taught me, it's not life and death. Thank you for that, Michelle. You have made me a better person forever, and I will continue to carry your lesson to those I meet in life. God bless you.

    Dear Michelle,

You touch us all with your grace and sportsmanship. You are truly a role model for any age. Not only do you skate from the heart, but you live from the heart. If everyone could possess just an ounce of the humility and class you encompass, the world would be so much better. Best of luck for the future and we are proud of you!

Michelle I am sending this group hug to you for all you have meant to each of us since you were a child. As Jim McKay has said:
She (you) have been a constant in a constellation of circling stars. I know that I cannot write poetry, but, you have always(since you were but a child) been what all athletes should try to be. Never have you done anything to cause anyone to look sideways at you because you are the epitome of what all the others need to try for.You are the beautiful star and a beautiful colorful rainbow all wrapped up in a tiny package of ladyhood, and we all love you and know that you will continue to make our hearts sing with your star and sunshine all in one. knee :

thank you so much for all the wonderful years of allowing me to watch you skate. Your skating means so much to me more then you know.

I hope that you don't ever quit skating. You are joy to watch. Again, thank you so much.

You have taught me so much. I know people know now what I saw you. In St. Louis I sat next to a guy who didn't understand what it was about you. After the week was finished, he turned and looked at me and said, "now I understand." You were missed very much by me and thousands of other people.

Keep on keeping on Michelle. You are one wonderful person and your skating I will treasure forever

    Dear Michelle,

We all love you so much! Whatever you decide to do, we are behind you 100%! You've given so many wonderful performances throughout your career. You always remind me it's not about winning medals, it's about loving what you're doing out there on the ice. You're just such an inspiration to all of us. Thank you Michelle.

You are a beautiful person. You are the greatest person that the sport of figure skating has ever had, and will ever have. I stayed up till 3 in the morning last night (im in alaska) Just to see your press conference live, I am so proud of you, you had such dignity and grace when your heart was breaking. I will never care about anyones skating as much as I cared about yours. I'v thought about it, and nobody elses skating brings me as much pure joy as your does. Every move you make stands for who you are, and what you are feeling. Your programs have moved me to tears more times than I can count. I feel like I can't find the right words to say how much you mean to me and the sport, everything I can think of would be an understatement. You are a champion, in every aspect of the word. Every competition I watch from now on, I will be thinking of you and remembering all of the masterpeices that you gave us with all your heart and soul. When I remember your skating I will not a remember a single performance or jump, or spiral. I will remember the feeling of watching you skate, even when you did not skate your best, I just felt lucky to have been watching you on the ice. There will never anyone that even compares to you in the sport of figure skating. You are a legend, and you have had more experiences just because of skating than everyone else could even dream of having in there whole life.
Good luck Michelle, WHAtever you do just put as much heart into it as you did your skating, and you will have so much success.

Dear Michelle, I just want you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. My heart hurt when I heard you had hurt yourself again. I know to withdraw was difficult for you. I wish you the best. Prayers are going out for a speedy recovery for you. We love you and still think you are the best ever. You are a true champion. You give to each of us a little bit of your heart when you skate. I thank you for that. Go heal and come back and kick some ice.

    Dear Michelle,\

As I wrote to you after your New Year's greeting, I feel honored and humbled to have watched you skate since 1993. You have brought beauty and joy to many lives and you are the personification of dignity, grace and poise. I wish you nothing but joy and success in your future pursuits, no matter what they are.

And, I doubt that there will ever be a skating champion that measures up to you.

  25. Default still the best

    Hi Michelle,

I can't imagine what it took to make the decision to drop out, but it just reinforces why you are so well liked. You thought of the team and the representation of your country first.
I hope its at least some consulation, knowing there are so many people behind you. You have been the main reason why many of us watch figure skating and I'm sure I speak for all, when I say that you've never disappointed us. Watching you is a pleasure, your smile is contagious and your positive attitude is unwavering. Being so expressive, makes it so easy to feel your happiness and your sadness.
Regardless of what negative stories the media comes up with, I hope you can still feel fulfillment, with what you have accomplished throughout your career.

Although I have no doubt we will see much of you in the future, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for sharing your talent, grace and class with us.

    Keep smiling,
