Default MK at 05 Nationals, Worlds -- so strong!!

I was just watching tapes of 2005 Nationals & Worlds, and I guess I didn't remember just how strong she looked. And wow, Spartacus is one heck of a program! She was amazing with it at Nationals, and even better at Worlds! Her jumps were huge! And she skated with so much speed and attack, it was wonderful to see. I remember liking this SP last year, but watching it last night, she really blew me away!

If anything, I think her skating has only improved in the last 2 years, it's just the judging that's gone downhill...

I recently bought Jon Jackson's book about how top skaters get screwed, and he has a passage about Irina and the Russian propaganda and how it makes her a champion, but it goes on to saw what about Sasha and her incredible carriage, Michelle and her perfect edge quality....???

You know, people will say we're biased, that as MK fans we just think she's the best because we like her, but I'm sorry, even if you are looking at skating objectively, she IS the best female skater in the world. I just don't understand how you can watch a perfect program by Michelle and rate it second-best to a "perfect" program by Irina. When you take into consideration ALL OF THE CRITERIA for a program, it just doesn't make sense. I'm sick and tired of watching skaters who can't really skate! Jumping and spinning is NOT all there is!

Sorry, had to rant, because watching MK last night just made me realize again that she is one of THE best skaters we have ever seen. I feel so lucky to have been able to watch her over these last 12 years, just blessed really. She has been a wonderful role model, and I feel very fortunate to have grown up with her, seeing as how she's just 2 years older than me.

Rach on, Michelle! We are so proud of you!

Amen to that BrenMT. Well said. And yes I think Michelle has improved technically ALOT, not gone downhill. She gets an injury and suddenly people say she can't do anything, she's not going to medal, blah blah blah. But the injury is gone, Michelle is back, and people better find some crow to snack on!

I agree with you totally. Having been priveleged to have watched some of her most memorable performances live, including Spartacus, her skating has gotten much more powerful over the last two years. It is palpable.

My lament is that the perception of the judges will be clouded by their own prejudices, fueled by nationalistism or resentment that Michelle has not competed in the Grand Prix for the past three years.

Will they give her a fair break?

You are absolutely right, when it comes to basic skating , Kwan is absolutely the best of any contemporary ladies skater. Skating purists always prefer Kwan. It starts at the feet, this is where anyone paying attention to such things would never equate someone very weak in this area like Cohen to Michelle, it's night and day. I read his book as well and he makes good points both about the clever propaganda that catapulted Slutskaya to the top as well as Kwan's superior skating basics.
