ROFLMAO! ![]() I just mean that a lot of people are slamming the US ladies right now because they can't compete with the top ladies in the world. Again, we MK fans are spoiled rotten. At 15 and 16 years old, Michelle displayed the maturity, composure, presence and ability of a 19 or 20 year old...we can't expect these girls to do the same. It's obvious their rate of development and maturity is a bit slower. They are all 15 and 16 right now and then need time to grow. Give Caroline a year or two (and a coach who can rework her technique and other problems) and she'd be great. Give Mirai another year or two to fully adjust to her height and work out her UR issues and she'd be unstoppable. Give Rachael a year or two to find the magic in her skating and she'd be wonderful. Give Ashley some time to rework her technique and settle into her skating more and she'd be awesome... These girls just need time...I don't think any of them are deluded enough to be shooting for gold in Vancouver. They should just be focusing on making the team and if they do make it, focus on skating as well as they can in front of the Olympic judges. Their goal for gold should be for 2014 at this point...I seriously doubt any of them are thick enough to think that they have the slightest chance in you-know-where of actually beating Yu-Na, Joannie or any of the top ladies without several of them having monumental meltdowns...although, it should be noted that stranger things have happened at the Olympics. Regardless, they are not ready and they need more time... BTW, Matiara, glad you liked my Buffy analogy! That show was awesome!

Your cookie dough analogy is more fun than Tamara Moskvina's. She said about one of her pairs back in 1998 that the ingredients were all there, but like all good pies, they needed to bake in the oven.
One thing for sure, I'm getting in the mood to do some holiday baking. Cute little skating cookies, ladies and pairs. Wish I knew how. Maybe Sasha can post recipes and instructions. ![]() ETA: BTW, when I suggested that Caroline Zhang's goal should be for the 2014 Olympics, before I saw Mirai, Ashley, etc., people did not receive it well. I agree that given a few more ingredients and enough oven time, most of them could be competitve champion skaters, just not this year. The exception may be our most consistent jumper, Ms. Flatt. IMO, she will be happier following in her parents' footsteps, so she should begin the long process of working toward her Ph.D. after high school. She has talents and gifts that will pay off big-time for her in the long run and guarantee her a wonderful life.

Someone on skatefans or rssif years ago (it may have even been Janet Swan Hill) used to use the "soup" analogy -- in which the skaters who hadn't developed to their fullest were seen as being "not quite soup yet." They had all the ingredients but had not been allowed to cook/simmer/develop to their potential -- thus, they weren't quite soup yet. Speaking of which, I wish I had a hot bowl of soup right now because it's cold in here!

![]() Michelle did spoil us. And comparing most any skater to Michelle is not going to work in the other skater's favor. Michelle was in a stratosphere all her own and it will be a long time, if ever, before she is matched. One of the reasons Michelle is so special is that she *is* one of a kind. That's why I try to compare the current crop against one another, enjoy my current favorites for what they are, and hope that the potential that I see pans out. |

Who knows whether any of the current US ladies will be skating in 2014.
Whether they will have the patience and resolve to withstand the demands of four more years of training under the increasing demands of CoP; and the ability to avoid injuries, remains to be seen. I suspect that skaters who compete for more than one Olympic cycle will become increasingly rare, at least in the US. |

I know for a fact Angela Maxwell plans on sticking around for more than one cycle.

Having said that, I do think she has been held up on several occasions. Like in the 2008 world champs, no way should she have been third after the short. IMO, figure skating on occasion does do this; there seems to be extra points for pretty girls. It's really annoying. I do actually like watching Kiira, but I always find myself correcting other people's presumptions of her skating. Over here you only hear about Kiira, how she did, what she wore blah blah. My friends know I follow figure skating and are always suprised to hear me say that she is not the best Finnsih skater, not even the second best. The way they go on about her over here, you'd think she was world champion. After this year's Finlandia trophy the main title in a Finnish newspaper was "Kiira drops her hairband" and in smaller letters below "Lepistö comes second in Finlandia Trophy" . You would need to read the article that find out that Alena Leonova won with Laura second. Laura doesn't seem to mind though as she gets to practise in peace! I have noticed though that the Swedish press here (Finland is bilingual with a small Swedish minority) do write about figure skating appropriately and do focus on Laura as the number one in Finland if need be and not on Kiira's hair. Sorry for the irrelevant rant, I just think this is the only place I can let out my frustrations.
