Default Frank Carroll Has Left The Building

Frank Carroll announced today that he will no longer be coaching at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo, CA. A new rink is being built in Cathedral City, CA in San Bernadino County, near Palm Springs. The rink is scheduled to open this autumn. Until the new rink opens he will be coaching in Lake Arrowhead.

Mr. Carroll will be coaching at TSC this summer for the Summer of Excellence Program. But after that he will be strictly at Lake Arrowhead until the rink in Cathedral City is completed.

As a member of the TSC family I am sad to see Mr. Carroll go. He has been the Atlas of TSC for over 10 years and I don't know how we will get along without him.

LOL! Sorry about the overly dramatic title. But Frank Carroll is such an important person that even just changing rinks is very big news. Especially for his old rink.

Doesn't he, for the most part, live out in the Palm Springs area?

Yes Frank Carroll vacations, weekends in Palm Springs whenever he can. Having a rink near Palm Springs will both give Mr. Carroll more time to relax and more time to teach. He won't be driving back and forth on weekends. So for Mr. Carroll and the students who can follow him out to Cathedral City its a good thing. For the kids back in El Segundo, it is very sad.

LOL about Toyota. Toyota Sports Center isn't actually owned or run by the Toyota Co. They are just the title sponsors like the State Farm US Championships. So you can't blame any gas pedals on the folks at Toyota Sports Center.

I'm sorry that those of you at Toyota rink will be losing him. I'm sure it is awesome just to be around him. Here's hoping he'll be coaching Mirai to Gold at WC next year!

Any idea what difference that would mean in travel for Mirai and Evan?

    Default Who will follow?

I just looked at MSN maps and El Segundo is about 130 miles from Cathedral City....quite a distance. I could imagine Evan relocating to Palm Springs or Cathedral City if he continues skating, but really wonder about Mirai. It will be interesting to see how this works out. I hope they can continue with Frank. I'm sure the skaters left at Toyota will really miss him.

From Arcadia, where Mirai lives, it's about 100 miles to the Palm Springs area. You can do it easily in less two hours without traffic--with traffic, forget about it. I don't know where in LA Evan lives, so can't tell you there. If it were me, I'd probably find a cheap apartment out there to rent just because you'd pay a fortune in gas and wear and tear on the car.

Commuting to the Palm Springs area daily would be a total pain in the neck. I can't even imagine it. I would think she'd need to relocate, at least during the week, to handle that kind of situation. The traffic can be a nightmare.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see how it all works out. I'm sure all parties knew about this well in advance, so everyone has had a chance to make plans accordingly.

I just hope it's a situation that works out for Mirai since she seems to be doing better under Frank's coaching.

Just for the record I was told the news would become public on Sat after the lady's free skate, there would be a press release and everything, so it was okay for me to put it on the forum. The press release never happened, I can only assume that the folks at TSC don't want to let people know their biggest draw is leaving.

I NEVER would have posted the info without permission. I never dreamed that Phil Hersh would find out from me instead of a press release. This whole week has left me dazed and confused.

I miss hearing Michelle Kwan and Frank Carroll training for the next skating year.... You always can expect a master piece skating program with these two...

I enjoyed the article and hearing about Mirai. It is good that she admits that she is scared so hopefully this will help her face her fears. Hopefully Frank can help her not feel the pressure of being in first after the short.
