He couldn't find two better representatives of good sportsmanship than Scott and Michelle. This is absolutely wonderful! I'm so happy for them.

Here is a better explanation of the appointed Presidential Delegation:
February 11, 2009
Vice President Joe Biden to Lead Presidential Delegation to World Special Olympics
Washington, DC – Vice President Joe Biden will lead a Presidential Delegation to the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Boise, Idaho on Thursday, February 12. Special Olympics programs serve more than 2.8 million people with intellectual disabilities.
The Delegation will observe the Final Round of the Figure Skating Competition and the Vice President will congratulate and present medals to the athletes. Following the medal ceremony, the Delegation will visit the Special Olympics’ Healthy Athletes Event to learn about this ongoing, worldwide program in which athletes receive a variety of health screenings and services. The Vice President will then host a reception for Special Olympics athletes, their families and volunteers. The Vice President will offer remarks at the reception.
The Presidential Delegation will include:

Is it just coincidence or is that very familiar last name tied to another Axelrod, Obama's right hand man?
Michelle's right down the road from me. Too bad I have to work.

Just read in another article that they're arriving at 10am and leaving at 2pm. How about a quick field trip for your class, Cole?![]()
"As it turned out, Kwan was the one who attacked the ice. In one hand, she held a saber, and in the other, a feather duster." -- 2001 World Championships (NY Times)
Yes, I read in the Statesman that they're arriving around 10:15 and will be leaving around 2:00. That is a really quick trip. Unfortunately, downtown Boise is about 20 minutes away. I would SO love to take a field trip. I tried to send my husband down there (his job is more flexible), but alas, he has various meetings today. They're supposed to be presenting the awards around 10:30 until 11:15. That is the only event open to the public.

Biden will watch the final round of the figure skating competition at Qwest Arena, and then hand out the medals.
For those interested in being at Quest Arena with the vice president for the figure skating competition -- you are invited and it is free -- but you have to get there early.
Make your field trip there! Go!

Kind of a strange quirky person -- the blog author, but entertaining a bit.
Also, from this article, Joe Biden and Michelle were:

Biden then awarded medals to the pairs, while Kwan handed them bouquets. Gold medalists were Werner/Ziebe; silver medal pair was Pan/Wang; bronze was Monreal/Visiconty. Fourth place went to Hung/Ling and fifth of Chang/Sung.

I especially liked this:
Here are a couple of AP Photos:Biden took the microphone and shared with the crowd that one of his lifelong dreams had just come true: Being on the ice with Michelle Kwan and being asked to participate in the Special Olympics. He went on to say that President Obama was sorry he missed the opportunity and that the administration would focus on the efforts of the Special Olympics.

Thank you to everyone that has already posted coverage of Michelle's visit to the special Olympics. Here are a couple more items.
First there is a video that Michelle provides commentary for at the Special Olympics site. It is under the Latest Video tab on the right side of the screen. I think this is the best Michelle has ever sounded in terms of her articulation and expression, and I hope she will try some commentary!
Second there are some cute photos of her visit with VP Biden on the site too, click on the Latest Photo tab to find them.
