View Full Version : What is your favorite element that Michelle does?

July 29th, 2005, 04:55 AM
We'll exclude the spiral for this, because thats an obvious favorite of just about everyone lol.

And also is there a specific program that she does the element in where it really fits extremely well with the music?

Being a huge fan of her Song of the Black Swan program, I love the split falling leaf she does at the end where the piano hits the high note. She hits it almost exactly at that moment every time :)

I would have to agree on the split falling leave:FL

but i also like her layback like in her East of Eden sp where it's in a slightly different position, kinda like :LB . very effective!

my number one favorite is Michelle's footwork over the past few seasons. it's like her footwork has come alive!! i particularly love the FWS from Arunjuez :SJ . for me, Michelle is best w spanish influenced music for whatever reason. she loves it & therefore we love it.

secondly, i'd pick her back sit when she takes the time to acheive "her" prime position. it's fast, well centered, great back & foot positions - it's just the best IMO & the reasons Dick gets all mushy when she does it well is because it's hard to achieve. i'll take :SS anyday to that new one w the change of edge that almost looks like the skater is losing their edge~

Split Falling Leaf - no one does it like she does it. It is as light as a feather, high, perfect split, body position uncompromised, and landed with speed and security. She makes it look like a piece of cake!

July 29th, 2005, 05:56 AM
Soooooooooooo hard to choose, but overall, I seem to go nuts during her footwork sequences...when she lets it all go!

July 29th, 2005, 06:56 AM
ITA about the split falling leaf--it is just amazing! Like MMG said, perfect split, light, airy graceful, and very appropriately timed in all her programs she has used it.
I also love the simple things..like her orginal Bolero from Campbell's--that graceful move of her wrist early in the program..as if she was reaching out to the audience...and the move she did in front of the judges right before her circular footwork sequence..it was like she stopped right in front of them, raised her arms and one leg, and said to them, "ok folks, hang on to your tushies and watch this!" I am refering to Spartacus btw. Anyways, those are just a couple I can think of, out of the many stunning elements she has graced her fans with over the years.

*stag jump in DOD and Aranjuez - GORGEOUS!
*triple salchow - ex: Aranjuez Worlds, Shez Olympics, Lyra Nat'ls and Olympics. Such a smooth jump, and I love the little steps she usually does after it
*Charlotte - so many beautiful examples to choose from. My alltime favorite is TRV Worlds.
*Layback with both legs down- she's the only one who does this move and it looks beautiful every time. Some favorite examples: Spartacus Natl's, Aranjuez

Skate! :lol

Seriously, it used to be the The Leaf, but now it's a 4-way tie between:

The Leaf
The Layback
The Footwork
The Passion

It's her overall presentation package and the way she completely puts all of her energy and passion into every move of the performance.

She has had many perfect moments. However, the way Michelle entered her footwork at the 2004 Nationals Tosca is my all time favorite perfect move, at the perfect time, on the perfect note. There is this huge dramatic orchestral note and Michelle literally exploded into her footwork on the exact beat. It gives me goosebumps every time I see it.

Edited to change a word.

I have always liked when Michelle holds the landing on a double axel and wish she would do that all the time as it shows how controlled the landing is.

I also love the SFL but like it when she does 2 in a row!!! Can't remember offhand which program(s) had 2 SFL's.

I absolutely loved Michelle's circular footwork in Spartacus at 2005 Nats!!!!

:FL :D

July 29th, 2005, 08:30 AM
I believe that she may have done 2 SFLs in OMT, compettion after 99 Worlds..

I always remember Bezic's commentary on MK's SFL during EOE, WP's 98...

For a "nuance" move when she turns her palms up after the 3 toe in Nats Lyra...and after the second lutz in 04 Nats Tosca...

Oh, hell, I'm with Ginny on this!

July 29th, 2005, 08:35 AM
She did 2 split falling leaves at nationals(i had thought it was worlds to start with) 2002 im pretty sure, because I remember Dick making a big fuss(good fuss) over it :D

ETA the year.

Bar none, my favorite move is the backward spiral. I don't think she's done it in a competitive program, but she has in exhibitions - namely Field of Gold.

July 29th, 2005, 08:52 AM
I really like it when she does a double axel and then holds her landing long enough. Of course it goes without saying that her spiral is everybody's favorite. I also like her split falling leaf.

Dick says that the falling leaf is one of his favourite positions.:D

I could watch MK do her triple flip forever - that glorious curving edge, the perfect technique.

Irina can do triple loops until her hips crumble, she'll never have a jump that gorgeous! :b

July 29th, 2005, 09:21 AM
Since I can't go for the COE spiral, I guess that I would have to pick the split falling leaf. There are very few skaters that go for the falling leaf split jump. Most opt for the Russian Split jump (which seems to have more audience appeal). She does one of the best SFL that I've ever seen.

Quote:
For a "nuance" move when she turns her palms up after the 3 toe in Nats Lyra...and after the second lutz in 04 Nats Tosca...

Yes that's distinctly Michelle. I also like it in Aranjuez when she turns her palms/hands up when she's skating around the corner and heading into (I think) her 3lutz combo. First her hands are down then she turns her hands up. Very elegant.

Oooh - One more! One of my all-time favs. is when she rolls her hand around in Shez right before the 3flip. It's like she's telling her story at that point with just her hand and it's so elegant, mesmerizing. I like to watch that in slow-mo.

Split falling leaf, it adds such a wonderful quality to the program, it's exciting. The backwards spiral and the nuances. No one does nuances like Michelle.

July 29th, 2005, 02:36 PM
I also love when she holds the landing of her double axel, especially in Salome :)

July 29th, 2005, 03:21 PM
The opening pose of the next program she does. Then I will change my mind to the next element...then the next...you get it.

I loved the split falling leaf in Tosca Nats and then the opening/spreading of her arms to the audience. Each of these elements were spot on with the music and made it that much more dramatic. However, I could go on and on about my fav elements. I LOVED the knee slide at the end of Bolero at Marshalls 05 and am patiently waiting the return of the knee slide emoticon. Speaking of emoticons, somebody make one of an Olympic gold medal so we can use it all the time haha.

An element I miss and enjoy is spinning in both directions.

July 29th, 2005, 04:49 PM
ooh yes the spinning in both directions is great. If she does this this season, willl she get more credit under CoP?

July 29th, 2005, 06:13 PM
I definitely have to agree that the split falling leaf has become one of my favorite Kwan moves over the years...perhaps even more so than her spiral. She really feels this move I believe. My favorite is also from the 2004 U.S. Nationals performance of "Tosca". She went through that dramatic footwork and followed it up with an explosive split-falling leaf. I was in tears by that point. I was also on my feet screaming like a fool along with the thousands of other lucky spectators in Phillip's Arena. I also liked the two consecutive split falling leaves at the end of "Schez"...very effective. The one at the end of "Bolero" had potential, but alas, it just never came together. I hope we see the split falling leaf back again in her programs this year.

July 29th, 2005, 07:43 PM
:SC This move
falling leaf
and of course the smiral

July 29th, 2005, 10:05 PM
I love when she holds her landings in 2axel, and with everyone else, I absolutely 100% adore, love, admire and hope to always see those falling leaves, split, of course! Love that, love it love it. Yep, that's the move that moves me. Well, there are many of Michelle's moves that move me, but that one, sigh, that is one that makes me cry, smile, jump up and down, oh, to me it is just Michelle at her most joyful. I like it!

July 30th, 2005, 06:15 AM
double axel with the held landing. Also that move from SOTBS where she's skating backwards in a circle on one leg with the other leg crossed in front and her arm out.....I can't really describe it.

July 30th, 2005, 08:47 AM
Whatever she does next.....

Along with the elements already mentioned on this thread (hooray for spinning in two directions!) I love Michelle's Y spin. She does it with such sheer abandon! :YS

July 30th, 2005, 08:56 AM
One of my favorite moves was the reverse camel in World Pro Ariane when she ended it by catching her foot in a kind of corkscrew spin. I also love the SFL & her beautiful spread eagles.

July 30th, 2005, 10:13 AM
Let's see...is there a list of ALL her elements? Those would be my favorites! :lol

the backwards COE spiral in FOG.
and FW such as in Aranj

July 31st, 2005, 07:46 AM
Her arm movements are to die for. So elegant. Especially when she is coming out of a jump. Look at the way she gently moves her arms down after landing the triple loop in Salome. Such attention to detail at only 15 years of age is so impressive.

I LOVED the way she threw her arms out in Schez to the cymbal crash of the music when she launched into the spiral.

And I agree with the couple of people who said the spinning in both directions. It's such a hard thing to do but she makes it look so easy.

July 31st, 2005, 09:19 AM
I kust re-watched 2003 Worlds LP--Aranjez. I love the split falling leaf into the spread eagle. Just elegant and controlled. As Peggy would say, "very Michelle."

July 31st, 2005, 12:50 PM
i always love her layback spins. :LB and her opening pose in tosca and TFB. :TOS i also liked her ending pose from lyra :LP .

July 31st, 2005, 01:35 PM
Ooo... decisions decision....

I absolutely lurve it when Michelle holds her landing edge of the double axle a la Romanza/Salome. If she doesn't hold it, it's just, well, a double axle. When she holds it, then the whole jump becomes so much more majestic.

I also like her SFL , this version , the sit spin (such straight back!), and the Carmen toepick . It hasn't been done since!

Not really an element, but my favorite part is when she is just about to begin her program and gives that intense stare and then a big smile.

I also like her reactions in the kiss and cry especially when she signals to me by pulling her ear and winking at ME :b

and the Carmen toepick . It hasn't been done since!

The Carmen toepick would be a cool way to start off a footwork sequence. Give a big kick and then launch into the footwork :) Its such a cool move.
