What do you guys think of Michelle's draw?

March 26th, 2000, 06:56 PM
I really wanted MK to skate after Irina, but she skates right before her! Irina will know exactly what she has to do to win this group, because she will know how MK skated.

March 26th, 2000, 08:21 PM
I'm upset that Irina Slutskaya is in Michelle's group. They shouldn't put the two main contenders in the same group!!

March 26th, 2000, 08:56 PM
This is inevitable, sooner or later Irina and Michelle will have to face each other one on one. I am not upset or disappointed, but instead, I continue on with my faith in Michelle doing her best. Thats all I expect.

GO MICHELLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think things will be fine for MK as long as she skates well...I don't think she'll want to change up on her intentions here just because of what IS does or doesn't do.

Sarah Hughes is the one who could possibly be hurt by being in the QR and having such an early skate order. If she has any chance to challenge for a medal, it now seems impossible skating 8th, with skaters like MK, IS, Gusmeroli and Volchkova all skating so much later. She certainly will not get anything in a way of marks. The judges must save up for the later skaters.

This is really unfair to have so many top contenders in one group. And it looks like the skate order isn't too kind to either Michelle or Sarah. Michelle has to skate right before Irina and Sarah has to skate before all of the big names Her only prayer is for Gusmeroli or Volchova to mess up quite a bit, because like AYS pointed out, she won't get anything in the way of marks. Oh well, we'll see what happens I guess.

Michelle has always expressed her thought about not comparing what she can and cannot do versus what her competitors can or cannot do. I believe that Michelle will skate as herself no matter how Irina (or the others as a matter of fact) skate. I understand how many may feel even more tense at the moment, but have faith in Michelle. Michelle skates best under pressure, and it is often then at which we have the opportunity to witness the most glorious performances. Michelle will be fine; in fact, I have a strong feeling she'll be more than fine. Michelle will be extraordinary (like if she isn't already?)!

It seems to me that it doesn't really matter what order Michelle or Sarah skate in as long as they both finish in the top 15. I don't think the judges will hold marks back on skating order in the qualifiying round as they do in the SP or LP. So it really doesn't make much of a difference, no matter how low Sarah or Michelle skate as long as their in the top 15. And I'm sure they will both finish much higher, so there's no reason to worry.

MKALLTHEWAY -- the reason people are fretting is because now that the qualifying round counts for 20% of the final results, just skating well enough to finish in the top 15 to qualify isn't good enough anymore.

I tend to agree that Michelle's grouping won't affect her *skate* since she should go out there and do her best no matter what, but it does worry me that a small error will hurt her in the standings a lot more in this group than if the groups had been more even. In any case, that's beyond her control, so I guess it doesn't do any good to stress about it. Go Michelle!

March 27th, 2000, 08:48 AM
Jenny--I agree, I don't think the grouping or the order will affect how Michelle skates (or Sarah for that matter either). They'll both go out there and do what needs to be done I'm just worried about the judges holding back marks. But, let's think positively...Michelle is going to go out there and have a magical performance to RV and land her 3/3, then Irina will have to follow a standing ovation

I think, if the qualifying round is going to count so much, they should do something to make sure the groups are more even. Or maybe, instead of having qualifying count towards the final results, just let it determine skate order/warm up groups for the SP.

I think it is great where Michelle is skating. Remember she doesn't have any pressure going into this competition and Irina does. Michelle will skate before Irina and will skate beautifully and that will put pressure on Irina b/c she knows that she will have to skate clean so she will be skating cautiously. I just hope they both have great skates along with Sara. I am being selfish here but I really wish and hope that Sara finishes in the top 3. That would be great for Sara.

March 27th, 2000, 10:52 AM
I would not be surprised if Irina doesn't go for the 3/3's in the qual round. I am not sure it would be smart to risk a fall in the qual round. I wouldn't be shocked if Michelle doesn't do it either, although, I think she will! Michelle's presentation will keep her higher than Irina's would keep her. Just speculation, though!!

Jen, call me an optimist or just plain old naive, but it still seems to me that no matter how a skater does in the qualifying round as long as they finish in the top 15 they still have a chance of winning. True the score counts for 20% of the total score, but it seems to me that skaters who finish in the top 15 are pretty much on the same accord with everyone else. I understand your point, that it is vital to finish in the top of the 15. But it seems to me that whatever points a skater needs to makeup, he/she can do it in the SP where the scores really count. As in the case of Tim Goebel who finished 8th is his qualifying round. Does that make sense? : )

Go luck to MK, Irina and Sara

March 27th, 2000, 04:18 PM
Sorry, but you're unrealistically optimistic (and mathematically incorrect). If Michelle finishes 3rd or lower in her qualifying group, mathematically she can still win, but she will not have control over her own fate, and she would be dependant on mistakes from those above her to win. This makes it very, very difficult and the lower she places, the more unlikely it is.

March 27th, 2000, 05:36 PM
Thanks for clearing up the issue for me. I just didn't think it was necessary to worry about skate order until the the SP and LP. Besides, I never expected Michelle to finish any lower then the top 2 . I think I will keep a little of my optimism to a minium until the Wednesday results and hope that everyone will do their best. : )
