View Full Version : Qualifying round is over - thoughts?

I have a few things to say to get them off my chest so I'll vent (not bash) here and hope others of you can share your thoughts as well.

1) Irina beat Michelle, OK I can accept that because they were so close in the marking. MK won art, IS won tech. so IS ended-up winning by .6 a point, 5 judges to 2. Apparently, even though MK and IS did 6 triples, MK only had one of those in combination with a double while IS had three in combination with a double jump. There you go

2) I'm upset with how mis-matched the two groups ended-up being. In group B you had all of the top contenders fighting against each-other. In group A there was Maria who skated well, got marks that were a little lower than MK BTW (.3 lower). The young lady from Denmark who got second place in group A had marks ranging from 4.8 to one 5.4!!! Much lower than Angela N. (grp. B) who placed 5th with higher scores!! I'm happy for the skater for Denmark (grp. A: 2nd place)however, she probably wouldn't have even made the top ten in group B. So I'm upset for the ladies in group B who will now have to skate earlier(or be dropped before the SP)just because the groups weren't evenly matched...very sad

3) Judges - I certainly hope that for the ladies SP and LP we'll have a more balanced pannel representing both east and west. I also hope that the judges for the SP will be the same for the LP. Does anyone know that??

Well, well, well........ first of all...Congratulations to Irina, Michelle, Sarah(WOW) and Angela (DOUBLE WOW!!)!!

Way to go girls!! Let's keep it up.

I must say, when I first saw that Michelle was in second I wasn't surprised (since I've kind of been expecting Irina to win this year, up until recently...now I'm not so sure that Michelle isn't going to surprise us and pull out a win), but I was somewhat worried and disappointed, since I always want Michelle to win, win, win...even though I like Irina too.

But after looking at the marks and hearing about what each of them completed, I'm not soooooo worried. Michelle sounds like she was solid. The 3/2 doesn't surprise me, but I think it will make her VERRRRRY determined to nail it in the lp. BUT, the 2sal surprises me somewhat. But if she had to make a mistake, if you want to call it that, at least she only doubled the jump but didn't fall on it.

I'm very excited about the sp...........and it's killing me not being able to find the skate orders for the sp yet!!!!!!

{taking a deep breath}
I cannot adequately express the extent to which I despise the genius who came up with this STUPID quals format. I'm not all that put out over Michelle's placement, she's about where I figured she'd be. What I didn't count on is the Sarahs and Viktorias and Angelas who are really suffering - way down in the rankings under people who don't even have all of their triples yet. Grrrrrrrrrrrr... Y'know what else? It's been all of 3 hours and people are already saying that MB skated as well as IS and MK because all three landed 6 triples. Whatever, IS and MK landed all of their jumps *cleanly* but Maria didn't. And one other thing: I think that the girls who had to skate in Group B should *all* get a couple of tenths extra just because of STRESS. How much pressure did MB have? ZILCH. And IS? Quite a flippin' lot. And yet they're tied... What a crock.

I haven't been worried so much about how michelle skates but my concern was these judges. They like irina now or else how would you explain a 5.5 in tech or a 5.6 in art for a program that was probable better than skate canada or nats. What is that about. I just knew they would give irina the edge in the qual. Maybe they will period. If they both skate well the judges will definitely give it to irina. I have been saying ever since irina won the gpf they would definitely give it to irina if she holds it together. They like the new and improve. Now as I'm not writing this I'm saying to myself that it doesn't definitely mean that it will turn out that way. For some reason I just can't say that irina will definitely win it all.

I know I'm not much help in looking on the bright side. I'm too much of a realist. I blame some of the articles I've read. They haven't left me with a good taste in my mouth. I think they need to have articles written by someone who really knows about figure skating.

Lavender: These articles are making no sence...how can you "easily" beat someone when it was sooo close?!? I just ignore them they don't know what they're saying

Deetlebug: I share your optimism about Michelle, she didn't fall and doubled a triple, not bad. She really has to hit the 3/3 (and triple that sal) in her LP though, I think she will.

Maeve: I completely agree with you!!!!!!

It's all up to the short now :
MK can't place lower than second if she wants to win the whole thing. I hope everyone handles their nerves and skates a good short!

I too wish I knew about the SP skate order and judges involved!!!!!

I agreed with most of what you said, Lavender. Ever since Irina unveiled her 3/3 combos in GPF, all of the sudden she's the skater the beat in the eyes of the judges. On one hand, I have no beef of that because I also like Irina as a skater and after a disappointing year, she deserves a comeback. But what about the other top 5 or 6 talented skaters out there competing?? I believed they will be overlooked! Should they just come to a competition and skate for silver or bronze?? In the qualifying round, Michelle did 6 triples and she received marks as low of 5.5 (two)?? What the two 3lutz Michelle did and one toward the end of her program. Irina did her 2nd lutz as her 3rd jump. Oh well, I have to resign to the fact that Irina is going to win, that way I can enjoy watching the ladies' final on Saturday. NO MORE SURPRSIES!!

March 29th, 2000, 10:29 AM
Why is there a separation between groups A and B. Why can't it just be all together? And how was it decided that Mk would be in B and Irina in A etc.?
Skatingfan don't give up hope! Send good positive vibes!

Actually, I suspect that Kwan had two combos (I'm assuming 3lutz-2toe and 3toe-2toe, but does anyone know for sure?). I think what hurt her was the doubled salchow more than the 3toe-2toe. Its too easy a jump for her to make that kind of mistake and her skating order certainly didn't help her out. Plus there were other contenders skating after Kwan and Irina, weren't there?

I haven't looked at the scores in detail, but does anyone know which mark is the tie breaker in the qualifier? Technical or presentation? Presentation is the tie breaker in the LP, for sure.

I've got on at great length ever since its inception about how stupid the qualifying round system is, and how even more stupid it is that it counts toward the final score. I won't rehash my comments on that point. It just gets the bilious feelings towards the ISU going for coming up with yet another crackpot system.
