Why is Maria so darn lucky?!?!? ARGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

I think I am going to cry! They will obviously hold her scores back for Maria and Irina. Now maybe even Sarah Hughes will place ahead of Michelle!

Unless MK makes a terrible mistake, or SH does a 3lutz-3loop combo, I doubt Sarah is going to place ahead of Michelle. Poor Michelle just can't catch a break, it seems. Still, if she lays down a good, solid program, maybe it'll put pressure on the other ladies. I'm not worried about Maria too much -- she's generally far too inconsistent, and even when she does the jumps, she executes a lot of them imperfectly, and she's hardly the flavor of the month these days...

Perhaps, it's fate that wants MK to have 2nd place this year. Oh well, I think next year
Worlds is more imporant than this year anyway. So ,MK next year will have no pressure on
defending her title. MK just have so much bad luck here. Bad Q group and skating 1st !
I also think the jugdes doesn't really want MK to win.

I'm with you, I think they want Irina to win. My biggest fear is that Maria will skate clean and push Michelle into 3rd. There are no North American judges if you notice. Can Michelle still win if she is 2nd/3rd/1st?

dreamr
March 29th, 2000, 11:56 AM
Michelle can only *realistically* win if she is either in 1st or 2nd place. Kind of like the GPF where Michelle was leading in the Sp and the qualifying round and Irina was 2nd in both but beat Michelle for the Gold with just that one performance. I say realistically because if she places 3 then there will have to be real shake ups in the top 2 for Michelle to win and by the looks of Irina no, Maria, maybe.

Can MK ever catch a break?!?!?!?!?!?!

March 29th, 2000, 12:46 PM
Well, hopefully, she'll catch one in the SP results and the LP. Remember, the ice is just as slippery for everyone else as it is for Michelle...

In the meantime, KEEP SACRIFICING THAT CHICKEN!!!

Well we aren't having chicken tonight but we are having Turkey. Close enough I say! But then again why risk it? I think I'll just head on over to the local KFC and order a Chicken Sandwiches! LOL

GO MICHELLE YOU CAN DO IT!!

I can't believe this. I hate this World Championships. Everything bites this year. If Michelle doesn't win the SP, I think I'm gonna have a heart attack. This has been a very bad day...

I'm so disappointed about pairs, that I can't let *this* drag me down too.

Michelle has never yet lost the SP with a clean program while doing the toe. So even if she skates first, what are the chances that she would get third with the flip? Highly unlikely I should say...plus Maria only does the loop and has markedly inferior spins and spirals. I'm not too worried about top two...again, so long as Michelle is clean and has decent enough attack (which is definitely getting rewarded this year).

As for Sarah...no way, unless Michelle messes up - period. Same with Victoria. It's only Slute or Bute that one needs to worry about, and I really doubt *both* will place above a clean Michelle.

Lara, trying to be optimistic here...

Man this sucks! Sorry, but I was hoping that Michelle would get to skate after IS. Hey Michelle will skate a great sp and I think that will put alot of pressure on IS and guess what? You guessed it, I don't think IS will be able to handle the pressure, I really think that Michelle is going to win.

SkateFan, Michelle doesn't need to win the SP to control her destiny in the long...just top two (even to Irina). Let's be grateful for that!

This thought just cheered me up. MK's idol is Boitano, and he always said he preferred skating first, because he was loose & ready to go, no time for nerves, etc. Let's hope MK takes inspiration from him. She'll probably be talking to him between now & the SP. Maybe he's even there encouraging her.

Let's hope she skates so brilliantly in the sp that it will rattle the nerves of IS & MB. Not that I wish for them to fail, per se, I just wish for MK to win!

Michelle is skating first again? I honestly and sincerely hope that marks won't be held back. Is it for sure that Irina is doing the loop? Let's hope that Michelle will be perfect and land the triple flip!

If Michelle is pushed down to third, and in the long program, she's third, at least Michelle will win a medal of a colour which she does not have yet!

Come on guys, be optimistic here. Michelle will set the standard. Let fate take it course, but I'm sure I'll be proud of Michelle no matter what happens. Besides all this stress and frustration isn't going to change anything. Just let it be, and lets hope for the best for Michelle. Positive vibes here.

Yes people definitely have to be positive! MK can do it... she's not defending this year she is ATTACKING and we know how awesome she can be when she is attacking!
I know you guys and gals may not think this is a good example but at 98 Oly, LP she had to skate first and she had an AWESOME skate... of course her marks WERE held down but the point is she did well... no waiting in the wings and getting nervous. She can just go right out there!

March 29th, 2000, 04:56 PM
I agree Francis! Why all the gloom and doom everyone? THink positively! True, it isn't the best spot to skate. But, all we can do is support Michelle and cheer for her to skate her best. As long as she does that I'll be happy (and I'm sure she will be too). After that, its all up to the judges and we have no control over that. I doubt they would put a clean Sarah ahead of a clean Michelle unless Sarah is TOTALLY spectacular. That is a good draw for Sarah though, and if Maria makes any big mistakes, I could see Sarah being ahead of her in the SP.

This is the most nervous I've ever been! But, remember that Ilia skated first in his long program at the Olympics and we *know* that outcome!
GO MICHELLE!!!!!!!!!!
I'm also pissed about pairs!
PLEASE NO RUSSIAN SWEEP!

Where are the North American judges? I think the Soviet Union broke up just so they could have 4 or 5 judges and 6 or 7 skaters at each international competition!!!!!
no flames please I'm just kidding and not having a good championship so far. Plus I was paying my nephew to tape what's going to be on ESPN2, but their satellite just went down this evening. BOO.

Michelle certainly CAN do it. I have to go buy more chicken!

Seriously though guys, come ON!!!! Michelle's short program ROCKS!!! I have not seen neither Irinas or Marias...at least I can't remember (bad memory) But Hello Michelle has a BEAUTIFUL Triple Lutz/double toe....if she does her flip it's Beautiful...her spiral is unbeatable....she has the technical advantage in the short program clearly, since they judge more than just jumps....her spins *may* be slow, but the positions she hits are amazing. Maybe Irina will be in first, but I highly doubt MB will be able to beat Michelle *unless* *Knocks on wood a thousand times* She falls...and Sarah doesn't have the artistry yet.....I'm looking for Michelle and Sarah to BOTH be on the podium!! YAY!! Go Girls!!!! And Irina too, because I have to admit I kinda like her. I'll keep my fingers crossed and eat chicken for the rest of the week

This hasn't been a really good day for me...

I get home, I go to FSWORLD comp results...I expect to see Shen and Zhao as 2000 World Champs...nope. No medal for Sale and Pelletier either. I feel both pissed off and heartbroken...Petrova and Tikhonov, the 2000 ::gulp:: World Champions...

Then I see Vanessa in seventh in qualifying!!! : ig sob:: Talk about unbalanced groups...that girl Kirkgaard is technically tied with Michelle for second place heading into the short!! I think she finished seventh at Europeans? I don't remember very well. I see Tatyana and Anna completely bombed...no no no...

Then to top it off, Michelle drew first in the short program. Then comes Irina, Maria, and Sarah skating after her. Are all these good karma waves going to Irina? It seems like the judges and the fates are all on her side this season. I love them both, but it just seems so odd that it's like this. The judges are obviously rewarding Irina. As long as she's clean, they side with her.

OH PLEASE PLEASE MICHELLE SKATE CLEAN...TRV is definitely a World Championship winning program! I bought Loreena McKennit's album last weekend, so I'll be listening to "Dante's Prayer" every chance I get...all my prayers to Michelle...well, and to Elvis too, hehe...

I don't post often, but I check in several times a week. I think we need to get this into perspective! Though it would have been awesome for Michelle to be in 1st after qualifying, the true goal was to be in 1st or 2nd, so that she had "even" footing for the follow-up SP and LP. With the addition of the flip, her short program is on par technically with everyone else. She usually skates a clean short--she's the most consistent in the world--and she will go out directly after warm up, which in this case will be helpful. I would much rather she skate early in the short, and get the best draw for the long. The girl has been rock solid in practice, and her short, even when flawed, has really pleased the judges.

It also appears that Irina and Michelle have the same jumps planned in the short. Even though its a technical program, those artistic marks are going to be very important, and we know who will win those! Michelle used to do triple flips in her short all the time, so its not a new thing for her. Granted its been a few years, but the flip was her chosen single jump back in 93, 94 and maybe even 95,(I'd have to check Cherie's tape) not to mention Nationals of 98.

I'm praying for a peaceful heart and a joyful attitude!

The bad news is that the Hungrian judge is on the pendal. Didn' she placed MK 5.5 and 5.6
in the Q? ARGHH!!!!!! One more judge that hates MK.

Can't remember who said what, and I'm too lazy to go back and check, so please bear with me:

To whomever is bummed out that Petrova & Tikhonov are world champions. Yes, its true, they are hardly worthy successors of any pair who has won recently, but cheer up. Its likely to be their first and last world championship any time soon, if ever. They're too mediocre.

To all the doom and gloomers, nothing is carved in stone. The results of pairs and the men's event should demonstrate quite effectively that everything is up for grabs. A lot of folks thought Shen and Zhao had a lock on the title, and look what happened. Normally in ice dance, the first place team would finish 1-1-1-1 and then Peizerat slips and the best team is in 2nd place at the moment. A lot of people thought (or feared) that Plushenko was going to turn the men's competition into a 4-3-3-2 fest and walk off with the crown, and he blew himself right off the podium. Even more people have been saying Stojko is past it and isn't competitive at the top anymore, and he puts in a solid performance to grab the silver medal over younger, more "judicially favored" skaters (aka "they who went SPLAT")

As for Smakelijk, who complained about the Hungarian judge who gave MK such bad marks in the qualifier being on the SP panel, yes, that's true, but so are the *two* judges who gave MK 1st place ordinals in the qualifier. There isn't a US judge, true, but there isn't a Russian one either. Sweeping the judging panel would be great, but she only needs five judges to win the SP and LP, not an unanimous vote. Five will do in a pinch.

Maria's draw is terrible for her too. When you look back at her skating history, every time she has had to go last in her group, her nerves got the better of her-96 Worlds, 98 Olys are good examples. Michelle's draw is really better for her than Maria's IMO.

Hey at Skate America Michelle got a *6.0* in the SP from the Russian judge I believe! (For presentation)

I read that MK also skated first in the SP at the 98 Oly (she won the SP too!) AND first for the SP and LP at 98 Worlds (she won both rounds)!

I'm not sure whether Michelle was first in her group for the short program for the past Olympics; however, I do remember that Tara Lipinski skated before her.

Rene

It seems the Russian judges tend to give Michelle good presentation marks.
Yes, Michelle was first in her group. I don't think it would have mattered one bit where she skated with Rach. As long as she was clean, she was going to win that sp.
