I just read a short article on the FS World page that Kwan skated an elegant and clean free skate. Butyrskaya fell on a triple flip and made an error on her double axel.

That's nice, and personally I am dying for a video of a clean performance of The Red Violin, but do you think it'll ever be broadcast?

KWAN HOLDS OFF STONG EAST EUROPEAN CONTINGENT Twice world champion Michelle Kwan took the lead in the Grand Prix figure skating finals with first place in the women's free programme on Friday. The American Olympic silver medallist held off the strong contingent of east Europeans including world champion Maria Butyrskaia with an elegant, fluid and error-free routine. 'I decided to take my time so as to be solid on each jump,' Kwan, runner-up to Butyrskaia at last year's world championships, said. Kwan is preparing to try to win back the world crown from Butyrskaia in Nice in March. After a fall on a triple flip and another error on a double axel, the Russian had to settle for third behind compatriot Irina Slutskaia, silver medallist in the European and world championships in 1998.

You are the greatest. Now all I want to find out is if MK garnered at least a 6.0 in that program and if she did her 3/3. Sigh, this day is interminable.

Please let them broadcast it...I really wonder if she did the 3/3. Anyway, YIPPEEEE. Things look pretty good for her making that top 2 in the stupor final (thanks for cjn on FSW for that appropriate coinage)

They will probably broadcast it, at least Michelle's (but maybe not everyone else's) they broadcasted her qualifying round at worlds last year. Congrats Michele! keep up the good work!

It would be pretty darn hard for Michelle *not* to make the top 2, at this point. I figured it out from the factored placements, but even if Maria won the SP, MK could finish fourth in the SP and still beat Maria (and the 4th-6th place LP finishers) in total points, and she could place 5th and tie. Assuming the first tiebreaker is the same as last year, the skater who placed higher in the LP wins the tiebreaker, so MK would still win the tie. One thing that is interesting about this format, with the LP first, and so much of the possible range of placements already determined, is how will this affect the skaters in the SP? Will Irina relax knowing she'll probably make top 2 and skate well, and will Maria, knowing what a tenuous position she's in, get nervous, make small technical errors and blow herself completely out of the water? It'll be interesting. . .

Is anyone surprised that Michelle used Red Violin first? When should I be glued to the computer for the next round of results?

I for one was not. Start off with the heavy hitters in this competition. The first LP isn't like a qualifying where it only counts for 20% Besides I think, in a way, she has something to prove to the skating world. She lost a world championship last year, but really only cause she was sick. It's time for her to show the world that she is above these other skaters in the whole scheme of things. They can challenge her if they do well. But first they need to do well consistently to really, truly, challenge her in the grand scheme of things.

I am a bit surprised, but maybe she wanted to "wow" them first...I just want to be able to see all three of hers...I guess I will check the net when I get up...I will be gone from early morning until mid to late afternoon....so hopefully when I get back, I will know something....

Unless she changed her 3/3 combo, she didn't do it, since one article says she landed a 3T just seconds before the end of her program, right?

for the grand scheme of things, ie world title will make all skaters do their 2000 world lp in the first round. B/C all skaters are guaranteed a first round, and be able to skate their lp in front of judges, to get a prelim opinion. So even VV placed #6, and can not get to the superfinals, her lp is seen by ISU judges. I think ABC only shows one hour of ladies tomorrow. How many can they put in an hour? 6 programs? I figure the lp of the first 2 ladies from the first round, and all 4 lps from superfinals. Mk is still too cautious and conservative. I think this first lp count 2/3 of the points for the initial first 4 placement, so if she places top 3 in tomorrow's sp, she will be #1 in the first round. For MK to skate in European ice, with Russian ladies, some skater's wish comes true. ( just being cynical)

The short program is scheduled to start at 2PM France time (I think 8AM our time), so we should see the results some time around 9 in the morning here.

In the article, you know how it said she threw the 3toe in at the very end eliminating the charlotte? I think, if she can be consistent enough, should try to make the last 3lutz into a 3lutz/3toe. If she did that, she still would have room for her charlotte OR anyother "artistic mark" move that shes got(shes got MANY!:)
