View Full Version : My Saturday competition report!

November 4th, 2000, 07:48 PM
Michelle-- great practice today (see my practice report if you want more details), but only an OK warm-up. In the long program, Michelle 2-footed her loop, nailed the triple lutz-double toe beautifully. Then she missed her triple toe-triple toe (not enough height and speed on the first toe loop). She then doubled her flip, and the rest of the jumps were awesome! Michelle didn't take out the Charlotte this time, and some many people were in awe with the Charlotte. Then Michelle did the triple lutz and right after, she tripped on the ice, and had her hands down. Then she did a triple toe. Overall, 2 mistakes-- 2-foot and trip. The triple toe-triple toe was needed! I felt she skated beautifully, however, and I don't think the presentation was greatly affected. She was absolutely gorgeous with her arm movements. The footwork looked so much more crisp than at SA. Something I heard from two ladies was that they felt Michelle's music was boring.....Fumie skated brilliantly before Michelle, and so......

I went down the stairs (angkok didn't come down with me :( ) and met NicoleM by the boards with our MKGA t-shirts, and she called Michelle over. NicoleM told Michelle she did a great job, Michelle said thanks, and STUPID ME gives Michelle a hug-- only my hands were going weird-- I had my hands around Michelle's bun lol!!!!!!!! angkok and Nicole were like-- imagine if it fell out???? LOL! I can't believe I did that. I was also stupid enough to not tell Michelle she was great-- I gave her the flowers and another pink elephant, and the T-shirt for Frank and I said "this is for Frank" LOL VALERIE-- :( I should have told Michelle she was great! Oh well! At least I got another peck on the cheek ;) Same side as yesterday! :) I must have looked and sounded like an absolute idiot though!

Irina-- fell on triple lutz-triple loop. Doubled sal. Nailed every other jump. HOWEVER, she did NOT complete a combination. She was obviously not very on today, like Michelle-- but Michelle had two combos.

The judges split 6-3 (sorry, I had to edit out my initial impression of 5-4) in favour of Irina. I totally disagree with the judge awarding Irina a 5.9 for technique since Irina had no combinations and lacked footwork.

On night night where both top ladies were "off", I would have given the nod to Michelle. I'll say it-- I felt Michelle should have won! (No biases....I mean, last night, I felt Irina won the sp). There were these ladies saying to me "but Irina almost did a triple-triple, so she did get the revolutions"......but jumping is not everything. Michelle is so polished on her technique. People seem to overlook the in-betweens. Michelle had plenty of that, and she also had the reverse camel which was awesome. Michelle's artistry was so absolutely brilliant and spectacular in terms of emotions. I only wish that Michelle will use music like Lyra and Rach next year-- I think it suits Michelle's bright, beautiful, uplifting personality.

Now-- today was great for me. I talked to Estella after practice, and later in the evening she saw me and NicoleM and waved to us. I got a pic with Shae-Lynn Bourne, Jenn Robinson, and Takeshi Honda. It was so funny-- there were all these girls chasing Fedor Andreev! I was so star-struck I just pointed to him with my mouth being a big O.

During the medal ceremony, Michelle was very very polite and well-mannered as always, so was Irina and Fumie. Michelle gave Irina a hug. After getting off the podium, the three medallists went to get their pics by the reporters, and then Michelle glided off asking the others to come. They posed again-- but Fumie stood beside Michelle, making Michelle in ther centre of the three women. Michelle IMMEDIATELY slided beside Irina-- Michelle is such a wonderful smart person who knows how to be a down-to-earth human being. The only thing I was sad about was how Michelle was obviously disappointed with HERSELF-- I don't think she was upset about not winning-- upset with her own performance! Next time Michelle!

Again, I have to say the prayer "where God has planted you, you must blossom...live there happily and make others happy." :)

funny thing. I was more upset with Michelle not performing her best than I was about her placement. I didn't care if she didn't win, I cared that she wasn't herself. Go get 'em next time Michelle.

November 4th, 2000, 07:57 PM
Thanks for the report, I feel better. Michelle always classy, always so graceful. :)

November 4th, 2000, 07:58 PM
Great review! Thank you so much!

I'd be incredibly tonguetied if I met Michelle!!!

November 4th, 2000, 08:02 PM
Well, I feel strongly that Michelle should have won. I know some thought that Fumie was better than Michelle (like those I heard in the arena) but honestly-- Fumie doesn't have the technique Michelle has. Fumie's polish is not there yet. But she's a cutie. angkok and I saw her and I took a pic for them, but I was so star-struck I forgot to get one with her too lol! Anyway, Irina might have almost did the 3-3 but she had NO combos in there.

I was heartbroken not because Michelle didn't win, and not because she didn't skate like a Michelle Kwan (although I was sad) but I was heartbroken because I saw on the TV, how upset Michelle herself was at herself! "You can't be perfect all the time", and with that "undaunted courage" Michelle will work harder to perfect her techinque (especially the spin speeds-- really quite slow on the layback). Michelle-- you are a brilliant and extraordinary person. God bless you.

November 4th, 2000, 08:02 PM
What a great report. So....you grabbed Michelle's bun did ya? J/K! It sounds like it was a good competition, even with the mistakes. I was so pleased to hear you say that Michelle skated beautifully. Other reports claimed she looked tired,so it is nice that you truly enjoyed her performance.

November 4th, 2000, 08:05 PM
"I totally disagree with the judge awarding Irina a 5.9 for technique since Irina had no combinations and lacked footwork."
ita with you even though i wasn't there. and didn't she had 2 more jumps than irina?

"They posed again-- but Fumie stood beside Michelle, making Michelle in ther centre of the three women. Michelle IMMEDIATELY slided beside Irina-- Michelle is such a wonderful smart person who knows how to be a down-to-earth human being".
what more can i say, action speaks louder than word and once again, she is a class act.

November 4th, 2000, 08:06 PM
Thanks for the review! I also felt Michelle should have won the long program. (and I am not just saying this because I am a HUGE Michelle fan, I can be honest when someone has a better skate) Irina is adorable and a wonderful skater, but I believe that Michelle's skating is superior.
However...congrats to all three girls. They skated wonderfully, and will only continue to get better!!!

Michelle is an extremely, and extraordinarily CLASSY lady. Very evident!

I forgot to mention that I asw Frank with Lori and Christine Brennan. Then yelled "Frank" and he looked over and I asked him if he got the t-shirt! He said yes, and thanks.

barang-- I can't believe I "grabbed" her bun. I was so nervous. Last night for the sp, I thought I was natural, returning the peck and what not, with my hands around her back! LOL-- the bun? (;) hey, I was just trying to see how she got it to be so big ;) ahhahahaha! JOKING. But I think I did make a fool out of myself!)

November 4th, 2000, 08:20 PM
Just want to clearify that it's a 6-3 split on the judge panel. I also think the program is beautifully done. It is so unfortunate that Michelle tripped during the crossover.

November 4th, 2000, 08:24 PM
I'm sorry, was it a 6-3 split? My mistake-- but I tried without taking notes. :(

November 4th, 2000, 08:25 PM
i was reading your report so fast and skipped some paragraphs thus, missing the bun incident.
:lol i wonder what michelle was thinking when she felt a hand on her bun. your nervousness made you hungry and thought that her bun was an edible one. ;)

November 4th, 2000, 08:30 PM
seeing as both ladies did only 5 triples (someone please do correct me if I'm wrong), and Michelle had 2 combos, Michelle should have won technically too with considerations of footwork and all that stuff I already said!

November 4th, 2000, 08:46 PM
for sharing your wonderful reports and photos, Valerie! Christine Brennan is tall, isn't she? Wonder what she will write next on Michelle.

Michelle is a class act with a heart of gold no matter what color medal she wears. Rewards/blessings in life come in different shapes and forms, and in ways no one can foresee sometimes. I have faith in Michelle.

November 4th, 2000, 08:49 PM
Thanks Valerie! Really love your reports :) ! Maybe they took off for the 2 foot on the loop, the 2f and the trip? We fans here always seem to give more importance to the inbetweens and spirals than the judges do (things Michelle does way better than almost everyone), but I'm with you on the combos vs no combos thing. It'll be interesting to see all the programs when they televise it. I too don't really care about placement unless Michelle does. I just want her to be happy with her skating and performances :) .

November 4th, 2000, 08:53 PM
thanks for posting this report Valerie!

November 4th, 2000, 08:56 PM
I was sitting here reflecting on tonight-- I am just feeling so awful and terrible at *myself*. I didn't even say anything like "you were great Michelle", or "thanks for the performance Michelle".....it seemed like I went up there and "had a job to do" by saying "this is for Frank". I feel so terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :( I'm going to cry. Michelle looked at me and said OK and smiled. Ah! Stupid me. I feel so mean.

November 4th, 2000, 09:06 PM
Valerie, I am sorry to correct you for the second time of the night. :lol

Irina: 3lutz-3loop(fall), 2sal then retry 3sal, 3lutz, 3loop with 3turns entrance, 3flip, 2axel, 3toe.
6 triples for Irina

Michelle: 3loop (slightly two-foot), 3lutz-2toe, 3toe-2toe, 2flip, 2axel, 3sal, 3lutz, 3toe.
5 triples for Michelle

So, I think Irina deserved better technical mark. However, Michelle had such great presentation on ice.

November 4th, 2000, 09:19 PM
Don't feel bad, mean or stupid! I'm sure that Michelle knew you were her fan and appreciated your gifts, and that you thought of Frank. I mean, you gave her a pink elephant, right :) ? You hugged her bun, right :) ? And got a peck on the cheek, right :) ? So be happy, none of us are perfect and I was pretty tongue tied myself when I met her and also did not say how great she skated. I only said she was the only skater who ever made me cry!

November 4th, 2000, 10:02 PM
I just had an emotional breakdown lol. I seriously felt so awful about myself I sat on the sofa and cried. But now I'm OK. :)

November 4th, 2000, 10:04 PM
I'm glad :) !

November 4th, 2000, 11:20 PM
Michelle only slightly 2 footed her triple loop. I think judges should credit it too.
About the unusual slip by Michelle, I checked the slow motion, it seemed her left skate caught something (a hole or whatever) that made it move slower, so her right skate touched the heel of the left skate. I think Michelle is the only one knows what happened.
Michelle is such a classy person and care about everyone's feeling.
Tracy said Fumie admired Michelle a lot, so it might be the reason she wanted Michelle stand next by her.

November 5th, 2000, 04:03 AM

Thanks for the report and DON'T BERATE YOURSELF! I am sure Michelle thought nothing wrong about what you did or didn't say! She knew you were supporting her! Lets just hope she rests AND works hard on her programs between now and Nats! :)

November 5th, 2000, 04:46 AM
I have loved reading your reports from Skate Canada!!

November 5th, 2000, 09:16 AM
Your reports are great! LOL with the bun...I am sure that Frank loved the shirt...Hey, MK is a smart cookie....She knows what she did or didn't do and knows that she has amazing fan support...Don't be so hard on yourself....

November 6th, 2000, 09:00 AM
Thanks for the great coverage guys....you keep me well informed....Im devastated about michelle not winning Skate Canada..I know its dumb to feel that way...I am a Michelle Kwan fanatic!!!!!!

November 6th, 2000, 10:33 AM
Valerie- Thank you so much for your reporting and comments for Skate Canada, it's appreciated very much! :)

and, Quote from mano:

"funny thing. I was more upset with Michelle not performing her best than I was about her placement. I didn't care if she didn't win, I cared that she wasn't herself. Go get 'em next time Michelle."

I totally agree!!!! ;)

November 6th, 2000, 10:44 PM

What I also told Michelle was, "It was just BEAUTIFUL!" (this while I was hugging her), and you said something in agreement, like "Yes, it was", or something like that. So actually you did give Michelle some encouragement, you just don't remember it! lol And when she said "thanks", she was thanking both of us! Anyway, I think you were wisely trying to remember what Michelle said, which is the most important thing!
