View Full Version : I'm back from Canadian Open!-- my report.

December 1st, 2000, 08:38 PM

So I'm going to skip all the intro and go into the skating. Obviously results have been posted and you all know Michelle won second place, and Josee won first. Despite how much I ENJOY having a Canadian win, Michelle and Sarah, in my opinion, should have been ahead of Josee. Just my opinion.

Josee had a very entertaining program, and she was right on tonight, except for a fall near the end of the program, which did, to my eyes, interfere with the presentation because of the way she feel and the time it took her to get back up. It was, however, a VERY creative program, and I can see her presentation marks being way up there. But the program itself had not much footwork, just a lot of poses and cute/humourous moves. I'm not sure if she actually completed the triple axel, my balloons got in the way and I didn't really see.

Sarah wore an outfit like Michelle's TWINE, she was right on. I thought she was going to be ahead of Josee and I was so surprised. Very entertaining and cute. She did a shrug the shoulder thing like Michelle's ADITL. She also did a Charlotte.

Michelle had SPARK tonight-- not just any spark, but THE Michelle spark. She just FLOATED across the ice, and the jumps just looked so effortless, and absolutely beautiful, the way they were done. She was the only lady, I believe, who did a combination other than Surya. Michelle's LAYBACK WAS THE *MOST* EXTRAORDINARY THING I SAW TONIGHT! :) :) :) I have not seen her spin SOSOSOSOSO fast on her layback since before she changed her leg position. She had her arms behind her, and then she dropped them down to her legs-- INCREDIBLY GORGEOUS!!!!!!!

After Michelle skated, I ran down by the K&C to set my balloons down (those you get at the floral shops that float) They said "World's Greatest" on them. Michelle was TOTALLY *GENEROUS*. She was THE only one who went around the rink to all her fans. She even went to the side by the judges, nbot just around the K&C. VERY KIND TO EVERYONE. Beautiful person. Frank then rushed her in saying "come on, you have to get your marks Michelle!" He repeated it several times. Michelle skated over, I shook the balloons, said to Michelle "you're the world's greatest", gave her her bouquet, she said thanks, we hugged, and that was that.

Michelle DEFINITELY received the most flowers and gifts of the night, more than S&P, more than Kurt. The audience LOVED her, way more than at Skate Canada.

I was so SHOCKED at the results, and I think the crowd was a bit surprised too. I was expecting a loud roar, but it was just a loud applause for Josee's win. I personally didn't believe what I saw. (weird, for the second time in a row, Michelle placed behind a skater who did no combination, and had a fall :p ). But Michelle did win the fans' hearts!

Michelle was gracious as usual for the presentation of awards. The three hugged. :) Michelle took a long time signing autographs for the flower girls. She's a darling!

OK, so back to my pre-comp story. I was in the mall by the arena, where the hotel was. I was in this shop looking for foam 6's, and then my dad said "Michelle's mom is over there!" She was looking in this arts/painting store. :) So I went to hang around at the hotel, and saw NicoleM. We waited and waited, saw many skaters, etc. At about 6:30, I saw Frank by the elvators, and I knew Michelle would be coming down, but I didn't want to stop Michelle on her way. Anyway, it ended up happening. I asked Michelle for a pic, and she said "OK, but quick, I'm in a hurry" with a very polite tone and smile-- I felt so GUILTY stopping her! Stupid me. Strike 2 guys (first it was SC, now this lol). She signed some autographs too.

We saw John Zimmerman MAEVE! And haha, when Nicole asked him for a picture, he responded something I forget now, and I said to him "it's 'cause you're so goodlooking". I was so embarassed, I just blurted it out. Anyway, when Nicole posts the story, I'm sure everyone will get a laugh. I was sure my face turned cherry red.

After the comp, NICOLE AND I went back to the hotel and waited. Surya, Alexei, Victor Kraatz all came in one after another, and that was that. After a long time, Michelle came in after signing many autographs. She was STUNNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean STUNNING STUNNING GORGEOUS. Words do her no justice! She was wearing a tight black top with a grayish bluish skirt to the kness, with nice black shoes. Her hair was in a pony tail, and she was shimmering! Beauty. Nicole and I yelled "We love you Michelle" as she walked past us to get to the elevators, and she walked off beautifully. She did look disappointed, and honestly, I have to say, I was shocked at the results. A bit impossible to my eyes.

Anyway, the highlight of Michelle's BW program tonight had to be her NEW layback. Gorgeous, gorgeous. You'll LOVE her arms.

Again, she was absolutely generous, and displayed true appreciation for her fans. She's a beautiful extraordinary person. That's why I love her, and that's why she's my hero, and your's too! :)

Winning gold or winning silver, Michelle has a golden heart that is precious! God bless this wonderful human being!

Thanks for sharing your report Valerie.....Kwan will always
make MK fans proud, no matter what happens....! :)

I am extremely proud of Michelle. I love her. :) She'll be back in the new year in 2001 with extra aggressiveness, I'm sure of it.

"Anyway, the highlight of Michelle's BW program tonight had to be her NEW layback. Gorgeous, gorgeous. You'll LOVE her arms."

Can't wait to see this on T.V! :D

So I guess that Josee is now considered an inferior skater or something??? From all of the reports (except this one) that I've read, they have agreed that Josee deserved to win, and they are from very non-biased people (even many Kwan fans)... Thanks for the review though. I guess I enjoyed reading it, even though Josee was not put in the best light in it.

It seems as if you are just crouching, ready for people to criticize, and ready to take offense, both here and over on FSW if anyone doesn't seem overjoyed with the Cdn open result. Valerie is entitled to her opinion, and the review is voiced as such. Don't you think it's natural that you might see a review that liked MK better on the MK forum? It's not as if she didn't have any nice things to say about Chouinard's performance as well. I don't believe anyone said JC's skating is inferior except you on this thread.>:

It seems to me that you have purposely searched out a place where someone said they liked MK's performance better (seeing as how this is your only post at MKF), just to get yourself angry. Why?

December 2nd, 2000, 04:37 AM
BTW, Valerie, thanks for posting your report. I'm glad you had a good time:) You are certainly lucky to attend these competitions lately. Are you planning to attend Worlds in Vancouver?

December 2nd, 2000, 04:48 AM
Thanks Valerie for the report. It sounds like Michelle skated beautifully! I read another report (from a non-biased poster) that Josee's program was entertaining but had a lot of posing at center ice.

December 2nd, 2000, 04:55 AM
Josef2000, I am so terribly upset by your post. I am very upset. You totally accused me of putting Josee down, and you made me sound so biased. I'm sorry but for your information, in case you're interested, I stood during my applause for Josee (yes, standing ovation because I appreciated her skating). I was screaming my lungs out lol. I cheered most for the Canadian skaters. Did I ever say Josee was inferior?-- did I not compliment her? Did I put her down like you're accusing me of? How in the world was I biased?

Is it that just because I felt Michelle had a winning performance, that that implies I think Josee is an inferior skater? I appreciate every skater, and I don't recall any where in my report where I put anyone down like you made me sound like. Yes I was shocked at the results, but nevertheless, I was happy for Josee. Give me a little more credit ;) lol.

Just to clarify, and to correct your wording-- I did NOT say Josee didn't deserve the win. There's a difference! She deserved the win, but I thought Michelle should have won. Don't make me sound like a rude fan lol. All skating is appreciated.

Anyway MKF, I should mention that Rod Black is the nicest guy! He was greeting everyone as he was walking. When he was walking by me and Nicole in the hotel, he said hi to me!!!!! Anyway, he stood around where we were for a while with his baby, and they were so cute I couldn't resist and said "Rod!!!!! Can I take a picture of you with the baby? You're so cute!" He was happy to pose! Nice guy. :)

AYS, thank you. And no, I'm not going to Worlds. It's actually during my exam period. Otherwise I would because I can stay with my relatives in Vancouver. But I can't, especially when I'll have to miss at least an entire week of school-- and I can't miss any clinicals. I'll be there with Michelle symbolically ;) :)

You'll :D LOVE :D Michelle's new layback!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG!

December 2nd, 2000, 05:26 AM
There was a lot of posing on the ice for Josee, and it was indeed very entertaining and very much appreciated. The creaitvity is amazing :) Although there wasn't much "footwork" but posing, not much "difficult intricate elements" as we term them in amateur skating, this is a pro-am, and the nature of the competition is interpretation. It's really up to preference.

Can someone do an analysis of the marks and ordinals (if you can find them). I didn't catch the marks, just a skim because I was busy putting flim in the camera!

December 2nd, 2000, 05:30 AM
Wow, welcome Mr. first time poster. What a way to make an entrance. :rolleyes

Thanks for the awesome report Valerie!!! :D :D And don't let Josef get you upset. It's not worth it. He's obviously looking to start trouble.

December 2nd, 2000, 05:57 AM
i enjoyed reading it, I can't wait to see the layback, glad to hear the spark was back.

To Joseef2000, welcome to the forum, I suppose that you have a point there, but Valerie is a MK fan, and I think that "spark" is opinionated, some people say she had it, other peeps say she didn't. I think that she did. What program did she do??

December 2nd, 2000, 06:04 AM
I should say that there was a reception somewhere after the comp, but it wasn't in the hotel (probably because there was a wedding party there last night). When Michelle came in the hotel all dressed up, that's probably where she came back from.

December 2nd, 2000, 06:05 AM
Diane, I think I deesrve an applause for helping boo the Finnish judge-- gave Sarah a 5.2 for presentation! Haha :lol :rolleyes Whatever!

Kwan4gold2002, she did a Beautiful World. Sparkling! I actually hoped to see a sparkling hair piece on her head, but anyway.

My pictures will be coming soon-- just got my mom to develop them (1hour photo finishing!)

By the way, to those who gave me ideas for flowers-- I ended up getting carnations. I was in such a hurry, I really didn't have to to pick them out; only the carnations were "ready".

December 2nd, 2000, 07:05 AM
AFter rereading Valerie's post, I think I just took it wrong... sorry for hurting anybodies feelings, I am a huge Josee fan, and it just didn't look right at first reading. Sorry again!

Josee skated to "Humoureous" or something like that I think... she was doing a mime program. I can't wait to see pics of her costume!!! :)

hi valerie...
thanks for the review. i can't wait to watch it. i haven't seen east of eden for so long and i can't wait to see BW...i can't believe it's even more beautiful then the times i've already seen it on tv. is sarah's program new? and i'm proud that josee tried the lutz even though she fell.

December 2nd, 2000, 07:50 AM
I'm glad you re-examined your initial post here and Valerie's, she's one of the sweetest posters here. I'm sure you can see by other threads here in spoilers that although some of us my be shocked or confused by the results, we're not bashing Josee at all. We are not like that here at MKF, if Michelle loses to a skater we'll discuss the elements, styles, etc....but we never bash the other skater because there's no point in that, unless it's Tonya Harding :lol j/k j/k. Last night, when a group of us found out Josee won we were very shocked indeed, I'm sure you were too Josef, even Josee was :lol , but, it's an interpretive program and she obviously had a great mime interpretation. I can't wait to see it either :)

MKF is about Michelle and the love of figure skating, period! Irina has beaten Michelle, and I lOVE her, Josee has now beaten Michelle, and I've always liked her (I remember that sweater routine she did ;) )

So welcome Josef2000 and I hope you continue to post here at MKF, because a board becomes more interesting when fans of all skaters share their joys and current info about their favorites.....we don't get upset, or bash you for liking another skater better than Michelle :lol , that's why we have the "Skating Chat section." Take care :)

Valerie - Great report, I'm glad you got to see Michelle and had fun. I can't wait to see the layback!!!!!!

December 2nd, 2000, 08:00 AM
Your review was fabulous....I kept re-reading it because i was imagining hugging Michelle kwan...Good for you...I have always liked josee...There is nothing not to like..She is beautiful, has a wonderful personality, and is a joyous skater.Plus, i have always had a soft spot in my heart for her ever since the should have been convicted felon screwed up Josee's timing in 94...So good for her....Just a kwanette opinion...Isn't it amazing that when MK wins a pro-am which she has done repeatedly since their inception, it is a meaningless competition, but when she doesn't win ONE, she is ready for the great skating boneyard.....

December 2nd, 2000, 08:11 AM
I thought it was great. I think anyone who would have a problem with your report just WANTED to. Maybe so they could run back to their friends and talk about how these poor superior skaters are being bashed by those mean old MK fans. wah wah...

Thanks Valerie for your review, I really enjoyed reading it!

When you and Nicole yelled: "We love you Michelle" at the hotel, what did Michelle say? Did she say anything or did she just smile? :)

December 2nd, 2000, 10:28 AM
People say "a picture is worth a thousand words", well I say "Michelle's smile is worth a million words"! ;) :D :) Hint hint!

December 2nd, 2000, 11:39 AM
Thank you Valerie! That was an awesome report. I am so encouraged by the fact that the layback spin was faster and better. I am so bummed that I missed the skating on CTV today. I forget to set my VCR. Now I have to wait to watch it on TNT.

I am glad that you had a good time!

December 2nd, 2000, 05:15 PM
I am even more convinced Michelle should have won-- *BUT* that is my preference of style, and choice of performance. (AND in no way do I deny the efforts, creaitvity, etc. of all the other skaters) But I like skating that touches my heart. Anyway, Michelle was exquisitely beautiful. She has imrpoved a lot since SC!

December 2nd, 2000, 08:15 PM
thanks for the wonderful report valerie!!!!!

I'm very shocked that Josee won...but I've always liked her...Didn't she star in a christmas movie with Kurt Browning a couple of years ago???I remeber seeing some of it on TV...Ekaterina Gordeeva was in it also and Scott Hamilton I think....???

I cant wait to see Michelles new layback!!!o m g !!!!

December 4th, 2000, 01:57 PM
I don't know.

December 5th, 2000, 12:18 PM
Thanks for the wonderful report Valerie! See, didn't I tell you it'd be worth it? And I think the only embarassing moment was with John Zimmerman this time :O !

Welcome Josef. Thank you so much for the apology. We only bite occasionally ;) !

December 5th, 2000, 01:07 PM
Sharon, I handed her a bike helmet, and made sure she put it on before hugging her. :lol :lol Anyway Sharon, thank YOU so much. :) You're great!-- the best Sharon I know ;) ! :) Re: John-- lol, I still cannot believe I said that! Apparently Nicole spoke with him afterwards saying "my friend was totally embarassed, she couldn't believe she said that to you!" and he was giggling or something. I'm still so embarrassed lol!

And by the way Sharon, we don't bite occasionally! We just squeeze hair! ;) :lol :lol :lol

December 5th, 2000, 02:09 PM
Thank you Valerie for the great review. I can't stop thinking about the layback!!!!!

Kwanette: LOL "should have been convicted felon" :lol

BTW Kwanluv, I personally feel the "no bash" rules DO NOT apply to Toyna Harding. But that's just me.....:)

December 5th, 2000, 02:40 PM
I just wanted to say, I really enjoyed reading your report, Valerie! Thank you so much for sharing it all. I think everything you said was right on, and I can't wait to see that gorgeous layback you keep talking about. :) You are SO lucky you got to meet Michelle and see her in person, and get her picture!!! Is there any possibility you'll be able to post it when you get it developed?? Anyways, thanks again for the report!

December 6th, 2000, 09:50 AM
Thank you! bike helmut huh? :lol :lol ! I so wish you could report on Worlds for us next year. Can't you tell your teachers that they need to re-schedule your exams? I mean <!--EZCODE BOLD START--> come on<!--EZCODE BOLD END-->, how many time do they think you'll have the opportunity to see the Figure Skating World Championships <!--EZCODE BOLD START--> <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--> LIVE<!--EZCODE ITALIC END--><!--EZCODE BOLD END-->? How can that compare to <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--> exams<!--EZCODE ITALIC END--> - yuck!

Hey Valerie,
Thank you so much for your awesome report of Michelle's skate at the Canadian Open. I'm glad to hear that she seems to enthusiastic with her skating once again. I can't wait to see her layback! Thanks for taking the time to report to everyone that can't see Michelle in person. You make her magic come to life.

December 9th, 2000, 06:38 AM
Welcome to MKF, please keep posting. BTW, Michael as in Jordan ? and Magic as in Johnson?
