Me too donnylutz. The results are usually 10 - 11 PM here in EST., so I am jumping up and down, yelling with no sound, pumping my fist LOL. So it's nice to share it with so many nice people.

One year, we watched Worlds online, but it was lagging big time. We had a blast and the suspence just about killed us as we waited to see how the others skated. She won and we were a all happy. We even had a prayer thread going for MK :RB

LOL. That is funny

I was sitting a few rows behind Kwanette during Campbells, but I didn't know it or get to meet here until I walked around the arena, found Erin, Heather et al and they introduced me to Kwannette. But it was all at the end.

May God Bless Michelle with peace tonight, that she skates from her heart.

THERE is lots of room left for mk. they only need .1 to put mk higher

Aranjuez
January 8th, 2004, 03:53 PM
Debbie, Don't be nervous. It is not uncommon for Sasha to skate in the SP. No one before her did well and I won't think she will be feeling any serious pressure till the long program.

donnylutz
January 8th, 2004, 03:54 PM

patsue
January 8th, 2004, 03:55 PM
Debbie, I agree with you, from the looks of Sasha's marks it looks the judges have left very little room for Michelle. Guess we'll just have to wait to see how it plays out. however, the sick feeling in the pit of my stomach is very strong.

MidnightNess
January 8th, 2004, 03:55 PM
Michelle has been in this type of situation before, remember 1996 Worlds when Chen Lu laid down a 6.0 performance? :)

GO Michelle!!!

Aranjuez
January 8th, 2004, 03:56 PM
In my previous post I meant to say, "It is not unommon for Sasha to skate WELL in the short program"

ChiSkate2002
January 8th, 2004, 03:56 PM
Well, as long as Michelle is in the top 3 after everyone has skated, she is still in good position.

It will be difficult if Michelle places 4th or lower because honestly I don't see any of the other ladies helping her in the LP... unless of course Sasha delivers a nervous program again.

ChiSkate2002
January 8th, 2004, 03:58 PM
This is getting very exciting... at least now we have a possibility of comparing a clean Michelle to a clean Sasha.. and we'll see how the judges will rank them.

heavenlee76
January 8th, 2004, 03:58 PM
There is some room for Michelle. She will do fine.

sunnybunny
January 8th, 2004, 03:59 PM
as long as Michelle is in top 3...Remember Sasha was in 1st after the sp in 2000! I am not going to worry - if she doesn't finish 1st in the sp, it may really light a fire under her for the lp! I think Michelle might benefit from some really good competition - to push her for 2006!

ChiSkate2002
January 8th, 2004, 04:00 PM
What were Michelle's scores for SP at last year's Nats?? I just want to compare it to the range of scores Sasha just received for her clean SP performance....

oldskatingfan

Michelle is a legend. She isn't as nervous as we are. She'll be fine. Pray for her to skate happy and safe. Nothing else matters.

Debbie
January 8th, 2004, 04:03 PM
Sasha wasn't clean in the SP last year. She had an awkward landing on her 3 lutz and then either 2-footed or stepped out of her 2 toe in the combo.

Last year Michelle's SP scores were 5.7-5.8/5.8-5.9.

That makes me feel a little less nervous now. I know she can deliver at least the same level of performance for the SP... so if she does that, she definitely can beat Sasha's scores.

And I think these scores were held back a little because she skated before Sasha...

I smell 6.0's this year!!!!!!!!

Combo spin...it's all over and people are screaming, but she looks a little bummed out??? That's what I just heard...let me see what the analysis is...I guess she maybe is upset a bit over the double axel mistake...she didn't fall but I guess the landing was wonky. rondo1974
January 8th, 2004, 04:18 PM
Whew... Well, some room for improvement, but second place at this point is fine. Seems like there wasn't much room for error after Sasha's skate. I don't see anyone else in the field placing above her and/or Sasha. Kirk might come close but she'd have to be dead-on. Now that I've said that Jenny will probably win the SP. :)

Show 42

gooch95
January 8th, 2004, 04:20 PM
So was there a sea of purple pom-poms, or is that just for Tosca?? Did Sasha get a standing-O too? Was it just the axel that was wonky? Sasha didn't do a 3/3 did she? Too many questions??

RA5CViggie
January 8th, 2004, 04:21 PM
It's cool, it's cool. As long as MK is in the top three going into the long, she has a clear shot at gold. Now she has something to fight for and all the pressure will be on Sasha.

vive_la_reine
January 8th, 2004, 04:21 PM
By the way, there are still a lot of skaters to come, so it's not over until it is over. Jenny had a great SP at Skate America. I can hardly wait to see her program.

sunnybunny
January 8th, 2004, 04:22 PM
wasn't Michelle third after the sp in 2000? i know sasha was in first, but wasn't Sarah in second? Michelle had a fall and they were both on. I am really not worried at all! i think the judges would love to give it to Sasha to get a good rivalry going - a real one (!). If Michelle doesn't win, I think it will really push her to improve. I think we would all love to see Michelle really push herself! I am ready for her to get back to the seven triple programs!!!!

Suzi Kwan

FYI to whoever asked: They don't show ordinals in the arena, just the scores and then overall placement.

Heather, did your friend in the arena think the judging was fair? And how were the pres marks - they are the most important as far as the LP is concerned (tiebreaker).

How was MK's speed? How did she look - ex: confident?

A report on FSU from someone who is there is that Sasha looked nervous and Michelle skated a great skate and that person thought Michelle should have won on presentation. I guess the audience thought she had it since she received a standing ovation.

I'm just glad she had a good skate. I'm perfectly fine with her being in second, kind of takes the pressure off and allows her to have a magnificant skate!:)

P.S. Just heard about the 5/4 split. That makes things VERY VERY interesting!

Also, Michelle was at the boards (with the other skaters to take the ice) when sasha came off the ice, so she knew exactly how good sasha skated. Not saying that would affect Michelle, but...just posting all details. ;) Sasha got a standing O, too, BTW

TONS of cheers for everything Michelle did. I could tell when it was the spiral, and I thought my ear would fall off during her layback. ;)

Felt like Michelle might come in 2nd in the short but I'm not as worried about the long. Sasha was perfect in the short but Michelle had a minor error. If Michelle would have skated clean she would have come in 1st.

I stand corrected, yes MK was 3rd after the SP in 2000 Nationals...

I don't mind her finishing 2nd (or even 3rd if the someone in the rest of the skaters out-performs her)... I'm more disappointed that she was not too happy about her performance...at this point I just want to see her giggling backstage (like last year's Worlds) after performing well regardless of where the scores put her!!

I dont know...

If sasha skates clean she can pull this one off (lp). she has be on most of the season and her artistry in the lp is great.

I'm a little scared.

Yet then again I'm sure MK will become powerful enough to blow Sasha Away. Sasha always cracks under pressure.

Angela was apprently "on" tonight and her jumps were clean. I am surprised that her tech scores ranged from 5.1 - 5.4. But the good thing is that her artistic scores went up 5.4 - 5.7. I hope she can hold on to third! I think at this point Jenny Kirk is her biggest threat!

I'm a little concerned about her being in second. Sasha has 7 triples planned in her long. Michelle does not. I just hope Michelle skates right before Sasha in the long and puts the pressure on. Sasha can't seem to hold it togeter if she skates after Michelle.

I think Sasha is ready. She has a new coach and she will probably hit. Maybe the 5/4 split will go the other way in the long. My only critique is Sasha has bad edges and does not even attempt to even go on an outside edge prior to her "lutz" but she has everyone convinced she is a great skater. Smoke and mirrors!

combo and flip were like? Technique-wise, on those two jumps, Michelle is definitely stronger than Sasha. It seems to me that even with the funny landing on the axel, Michelle's technical scores should have been closer to Sasha's. Was her speed maybe less than usual or her spins less fast as usual? livetoskate had to get right off the phone so I didn't have a chance to ask those questions. She's a skater herself, so I know she could have answered them. Just hoping to get more details here...thanks!!!

Debbie-My friend said Michelle looked slow. But she still skated well. She thought the placement of 2nd is right, didn't ask about the marks themselves. When they showed the results, I heard applause. Not thunderous applause, kind of like they agreed, but weren't estatic over it, you know?

I agree... I think I have esp or something, guys. I predicted the short program podium (in Skating Chat):

1. Cohen (skates before most of the "big names" so less focus on her competitors, and wagner is thrilled in the k&c)
2. MK (skates clean, but less inspired than last yr's, she and raphael laugh and smile from k&c)
3. Nikodinov (clean and beautiful, but less in-betweens than Cohen or MK. although some will say she was robbed...hehehe)

Well, as long as Jenny Kirk gets 4th (which I think will happen). I don't think the judges give her enough credit--even though she has fantastic presentation and really connects with the audience.

Anyways, hope my "winning streak" continues, b/c I predicted MK would win the long program! :)

...for the info. Well, MK hasn't competed this short program since Worlds - come to think of it, she hasn't competed in a high-pressure event like this since Worlds, since she skipped the GP series. Maybe tonight was a warm-up. Hopefully, this will push her in Sat's LP. And with the pres marks the tiebreaker in the LP, I guess these marks aren't that discouraging. Except there are no mandatory deductions for flutzing in the LP.

With all the talk of the skating order, I think it might be best for MK to skate before Sasha, to put the pressure on. Then again, Sasha skated first at the Olys and Worlds the past few years. Oh well, sending out vibes to MK for a good skate. And as much as I love Jenny - go Angela!

I knew that if SC skated clean and MK had a slightest of error, the judges would favor SC. I do believe the judges are ready to give SC the National title to get this rivalry going as we head into Olympics 2006.

I think if SC skates like today on Saturday, the title is hers no matter how much she flutzes!! <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/frown.gif" /> I guess we can call this the WAGNER Effect!!!!

I think that Wagner has a political clout and is respected. Also you could see by the judges scores last year even with Sasha's mistakes someone gave her a 5.9 in pres. Michelle was not perfect and she didn't win the short and that is probably fair. Sasha does not do a lutz at all but she looks pretty who knows...I think that the judges want something else from Michelle something new to inspire them and Michelle knows it. Sasha looked very comfortable back stage with Wagner so maybe Wagner has that magic touch. It is a competition and I'm going to enjoy Michelle competing in it instead of worrying if she will win. She has won alot of these things and if she doesn't win this time maybe she will win next time. Or maybe she will not but will win the Olys... I just like watching her and knowing that she is out there putting her heart into it. Michelle is always an inspiration win or lose that's why she has captivated me so.

Hey everyone:) I know we are all trying to get excited for Saturday...but please lets not make assumptions on how sasha is going to skate. For all we know, she could have the skate of her life. i am not counting on her to crumble, I am anticipating a great skate from both her and Michelle.:)

All this talk of pressure with Sasha may very well backfire. I just want Michelle to skate awesome.

I can't believe I can't find a television around here anywhere to watch ESPN2 on....I feel so sad!

I saw a link to more photos of Michelle's new dress, where you can truly appreciate the details -

I will definitely try to find a television for Saturday!! Eat your chicken everyone!

OK, details on Jenny. She was perfect, though a little tilted on one of the jumps.

I agree with those talking about not talking about pressure, etc. Karma people, remember that. ;)

OK, so the results so far are

1. Sasha
2. Michelle
3. Jenny
4. Angela
5. Amber
6. AP (I think?)

i still can't help but feel disappointed. it's obvious by the details that michelle didn't skate her best. but hopefully this will motivate her to skate her best sat and as selfish as it may sound, i would very much like her to win the title again. maybe it's a blessing of some sorts but i will not be viewing the spoilers since i will be in reno that night but i'm hoping and praying that she will skate her best and blow everyone away.

Good points Cestlavie000000 :)

And honestly, I don't feel comfortable banking on Sasha's tendency to crumble in order for Michelle to win. If Sasha keeps it together and outskates Michelle for the win, then good for her. I will be sad for Michelle, but happy for Sasha.

It will only be the utterly obnoxious gushing from Dick & Peggy that will be intolerable.

And the important thing is that both young ladies make it to Worlds.

The one I'm most sad for and worried about right now is Timothy. I've never seen anyone crumble like that. And to see tears in his eyes just breaks my heart. I'm so impressed with how well he handled his interview afterwards. If he doesn't pull up to medal he won't go to Worlds. And considering he's the 2 time and current World silver medalist, I think that would be bad for him and for US skating for him not to go.

Guess I'll have to wait until Saturday.

Of course, I have to work Saturday from 8pm to 4am and won't get home until 5am so I won't know anything. Too bad I'm not hooked up with the SISTAS so I could get a message on my cell phone letting me know how the ladies do before I get home. :(

I am nervous now, I honestly don't think Michelle Kwan will win because like someone said that Robin Wagner has is well known and because of political standards or somethin like that the jugdes will give Sasha a higher score.

I know Michelle probabaly has a little problem and in second but I don't think she will be lit up on Saturday. I think she will most likely win 2nd in National this year and Sasha will be first.

I have to admit, eventhough I have always been a michelle kwan fan, I have to say that Sasha's program is packed with more fire, more speed, amazing jumps and also amazing choreography. Sasha's program this year is better than Michelle Kwan (in my opinion). Also, her dress stand out in judges mind and her judge.

I have to say even though we are in US National, political issue still plays a part. Even if Michelle skate PERFECT and Sasha skates with tiny wobble, Sasha will still WIN!!!!!!

These are just my opinions!!!

I LOVE IT! Well, at least Michelle blows away the competition in the costume/dress department!!

I love how she gets into the character of the music:

O.k. I don't want to say this, but I have to say SASHA CHOEN is going to WIN and be the 2004 NATIONAL CHAMPION. I saw her skate today and she skated like she NEVER have skated before.

This is the first time that I have saw her skated any of her program with OUT ANY BUBBLE!!!!!

"She took her time" Dick Button Said. I have to agree with that. She is going to WIN, as upset as I am going to be on Saturday, she will win. NO QUESTION DOUBTED she WILL WIN. I think Robin is FINALLY THE RIGHT COACH for her.

There Kwan's 7th continuous National Title.

By the way, when is the ACTUAL EVENT of ladies long? Is it tomorrow or is it Saturday nite?

>: If you read the bulletin just posted on Yahoo, it says something about a look of grim resolve then Michelle Kwan broke into a smile...." Come on guys, doesn't that tell you Michelle is mad and is now in full fighting mode? Talk about Full Metal Jacket!!! She has done this for ten years. She knows what to do. She has been second and third at Worlds and won against competitors who perhaps may not have been better but had the judges on their side. Michelle Kwan is steel encased in purespun silk and chiffon. She is one tough cookie and one formidable competitor. Watch her come out with all guns blazing. This has probably put her in fighting mode. Sasha had better watch out.

Remember at SLC Sarah had nothing to lose. Sasha does. Also remember that Sasha was dazzling throughout the Grand Prix - but also remember she had no real competition. At the final she had some real competition. Look what happened. I don't buy the excuse about too many competitions and flu, etc., etc. Sure, it probably impacted her, but I think the pressure got to her.

Also, a coach at my local rink went to the last competition where Michelle and Sasha competed against each other (I can't remember what it was now). She said "Sasha went to pieces with Michelle there." And this from a woman who's not really a huge Michelle Kwan admirer.

So relax. This might turn out to be the best thing to happen. Sasha is now the hunted. Michelle Kwan (her nemesis, I believe) is the hunter. Michelle has 7 U.S. titles and 5 world titles. Sasha has none. I know there's always a first time, but you have to admit, the odds are better for Michelle keeping a cool head rather than Sasha.

Anyone feel better?

give me a break people. do you think Michelle is sweating over Sasha? if anything, she's pissed about the 2 axel.

Irina has beaten Michelle in the SP so many times it's not even funny. do you think Irina's skating is better than Sasha's tonight? i don't.

i haven't seen Michelle yet but that's the best i remember ever seeing Sasha. here's to Michelle on saturday~

yes i feel better, just the pre long panic, i want michelle to win, we all know about her comebacks

But this new sasha looks like a michelle, and they both can't be 1, the judges are looking for something new, i hope they judge fairly

Pattern99 - you make some excellent points! I hope you are exactly right, but there is a filp side, too! Sasha could beat that demon and have the skate of her life and beat a clean Michelle. If she does, though, I think it will light a fire under Michelle like we haven't seen in a little while! Then, we will have an incredibly exciting World Championships on our hands!

As some has mentioned, what I am afraid is the judges or USFSA is ready to crown a new National Champion (you know with all this Sasha hype). Sasha skated early and yet the judges leave very little room in terms of the marks (yeah ..I know they are place holders) but I just had a bad feeling they are holding Michelle to a higher standard and she has not made the changes that they want to see yet.
